Background / History

Madara and Hashirama Senju were once close childhood friends who shared a dream of peace. Their positions as heirs and later leaders of the rival Uchiha and Senju clans made that friendship impossible to preserve. Izuna's death at Tobirama Senju's hands escalated the conflict; Madara took Izuna's eyes, awakened the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, and led the Uchiha into all-out war against the Senju. When the casualties became unbearable, Madara and Hashirama ultimately joined forces to establish Konoha. 67 70

Madara later left Konoha after none of the Uchiha chose to follow him. He consequently regards later Uchiha clansmen as traitors and expresses no concern for their survival. He also reveals that his conflict with Hashirama was tied to obtaining Hashirama's chakra and awakening the Rinnegan. 59 75

Uchiha Shadian resurrected Madara in Konoha and deliberately showed him the village's Hokage monument, the Uchiha Clan's persecution, and the revival of Tobirama Senju. Madara was initially hostile toward Shadian, but accepted the revival as genuine after feeling pain and eventually moved to confront Tobirama. 52 53

Madara released the Nine-Tails and launched an assault on Konoha. He destroyed the Hokage Building with a two-faced Susanoo, then used Tengai Shinsei to devastate the village with a colossal meteor. He later claimed he had merely wished to test a new ninjutsu, though his hatred of Tobirama and grief over Izuna remained central to his actions. 56 58 59

After learning from Shadian that the Eye of the Moon Plan and the Uchiha Stone Tablet had been manipulated by Black Zetsu, Madara was enraged at having been used. Shadian subsequently revived Izuna, reuniting the brothers. 72

Personality

Madara is domineering, proud, and openly contemptuous of those he considers beneath him. He dismisses Konoha's people as “gravel,” insults Tobirama as an insect, and believes that only Hashirama and Shadian warrant serious attention. 56 59 110

His strongest emotional bond is with Izuna. Madara's hostility toward Tobirama stems directly from Izuna's death, and he becomes frantic when Izuna is killed or sealed. His anger at learning that Black Zetsu manipulated him is equally intense, as Madara cannot tolerate being treated as another person's pawn. 67 72 126
