Background
Yang Lin began as an ordinary mortal. While fishing, he was injured and bled onto the Future Divine Stone, awakening its ability to simulate events before they occurred. He used its foresight to avoid danger, uncover opportunities, enter the Great River Sword Sect, and rise from a menial disciple to an inner sect disciple. 77
On the day he was due to receive a Heaven-rank sword art, Yang Lin simulated the destruction of the Great River Sword Sect by Yan Chixia, Lin Wan'er, and Chen Changqing. Terrified by Chen Changqing's overwhelming strength, he repeatedly changed his route, appearance, and mode of travel in an attempt to flee, but encountered Chen Changqing in every simulation. 77 80 81
He warned the Great River Sword Sect through a Heavenly Dao Oath, prompting Sect Master Dugu Yijian to mobilize the sect and summon its allies. His simulations showed that even the sect's Emperor Corpse, dozens of Quasi-Emperors, and its hidden trump card could not change the outcome. 83 84 85
After five simulations, including one in which the Evil Sword Immortal's negative emotions shattered his consciousness, Yang Lin voluntarily sought Chen Changqing out and offered the Future Divine Stone in exchange for his life. 86 88
Chen Changqing returned the depleted stone, accepted Yang Lin as a servant of the Longevity Chen Family, and placed a soul mark on him that governs his life, thoughts, and whereabouts. Yang Lin later helped lure the Great River Sword Sect's allied forces into Chen Changqing's trap and received a jade talisman granting access to the Dao-Comprehension Heavenly Net. 87 88 89 99 100
Personality
Yang Lin is cautious, adaptable, and strongly motivated by survival. He relies on repeated simulations to identify the safest course of action, changing his plans as soon as a projected future proves fatal. 77 80
Chen Changqing's ability to observe the Great River Sword Sect and see through Yang Lin's behavior reduces his confidence in the Future Divine Stone to despair. Once he accepts that resistance is futile, Yang Lin becomes cooperative, openly recounts his simulations, and expresses fervent gratitude for being accepted into the Chen Family. 85 88 89 100
