When Cain set down his pen, the sheet of paper was already filled with writing.
Staring at the words on the page, Cain fell into thought again before crossing out several lines.
In the end, only the names of five medicinal ingredients remained. Holding the rewritten list, Cain found Butler Ruben and said:
"Butler Ruben, please prepare several portions of the ingredients on this list. I need to brew a potion."
Ruben took the paper and looked it over. Aside from Moonlight Moss, which was somewhat difficult to find, the rest—such as Sun-Crown Sunflower roots and Silverleaf Mint—were quite common.
Ruben nodded. "Mr. Cain, I'll prepare them right away."
With nothing to do for the moment, Cain walked out of the viscount's estate. Looking at the bleak streets, he could not help but sigh.
Then he felt a measure of relief, grateful that the people of Mудorud had not been infected for more than twenty days.
According to Cain's research, the viral spores were in their reproductive phase during the first ten days and did not pose a particularly serious threat to the human body.
At most, they caused symptoms such as coughing, fever, and weakness.
But after twenty days, the viral spores would have essentially spread across the body's vital organs, and their harm would begin to show.
Had Cain arrived any later, Viscount Livina would have fallen into a coma, her internal organs eroded by the viral spores. Once those organs had been completely consumed, death would not have been far away.
Based on Cain's estimates, it took only around twenty-five days from the moment the viral spores first lodged themselves in a person's body until the end of their life.
Viscount Livina had been among the first people infected, yet only half a month had passed so far.
So long as Cain could develop a cure within five days, the people of Mудorud could still be saved.
It had to be said that the viscount's estate was highly efficient. Cain had only spoken to Butler Ruben that morning, yet the ingredients were ready by afternoon.
Cain inspected them and found that all the ingredients were of excellent quality. He carried them into the laboratory and began making the potion.
It was not until evening that Cain emerged from the laboratory, holding a bottle of cyan-blue potion.
This potion was the result of his research. After repeated adjustments, he had finally determined the correct proportions of Sun-Crown Sunflower roots, Silverleaf Mint, Earthcrystal Water Orchid juice, Witheredwood Python skin, and Moonlight Moss.
Cain named the potion the Spirit Purification Essence Potion. Its effect was to raise the temperature inside the body, forcing the viral spores to leave the organs they had attached themselves to.
They would then be expelled from the body through breathing, urination, and other means.
With the nourishing effects of Earthcrystal Water Orchid juice and Silverleaf Mint, however, this high temperature would not harm the body.
Cain had tested it in the laboratory, and it showed excellent results in suppressing and removing the viral spores. Now, he needed to find a patient to test it on.
Finding a suitable patient would not be difficult. Even within the viscount's estate alone, there were quite a few.
Cain had originally intended to find Ruben and have him arrange someone for the test, but after searching around, he could not find him.
Only after checking the time did he realize it was already past three in the morning. At this hour, Ruben had surely gone to bed.
At that moment, a servant responsible for patrolling the estate at night spotted Cain and respectfully stepped forward to ask:
"Mr. Cain, is there anything I can help you with?"
Cain had planned to return and rest, then deal with it tomorrow, but he immediately explained what he needed.
Since Ruben had given prior instructions, the servant promptly led Cain toward a room.
When they reached the door, he explained, "Mr. Cain, my friend Vidal is in this room. He can serve as the test subject."
Although Cain had great confidence in his potion, he still asked, "Shouldn't we ask for his own opinion first?"
Luke's expression darkened as he said sadly, "Vidal was among the first few to be infected. He's already fallen into a coma. I think there's still hope if we try. If we don't, all we can do is watch him die."
Seeing this, Cain no longer hesitated. He and Luke pushed open the door and entered. The room was filled with the same nauseating stench Cain had encountered when he entered Livina's room.
It was even stronger. Cain looked at Vidal lying on the bed and found his condition far worse than Livina's had been.
Days of relentless fever had given his skin an unnatural flush, and his lips were severely cracked. From even a short distance away, it felt as though there was not a person lying on the bed, but a furnace.
Cain pried open Vidal's mouth and poured in the potion, then said to Luke, "Remember to observe his condition. Someone will come to find you tomorrow."
Though he had not yet seen the results, Luke excitedly dropped to his knees. "Mr. Cain, on Vidal's behalf, I thank you for your kindness."
Cain hurriedly helped him up. "Don't do this. I merely did what I should."
Once Luke was no longer so agitated, Cain bade him farewell and returned to his room.
The moment he lay down, Cain fell into a deep sleep. The constant strain on his mind had left him utterly exhausted.
After waking the next day, he treated Viscount Livina as usual. When the treatment was complete, Cain said:
"Viscount Livina, after one more treatment, you'll be fully recovered."
Livina was delighted to hear this news. Before she could thank him, Cain continued:
"Yesterday, I only made one bottle of potion, which I gave to a servant named Vidal. I'd like to know how he is doing now."
Livina was unfamiliar with the servants in her own estate, so she turned her gaze toward Ruben.
However, Ruben was currently too stunned to notice what Livina meant.
It was not until Livina called his name that he came back to his senses.
He hurriedly apologized for his lapse, then said, "I'll go check on Vidal right away. My lady, Mr. Cain, please wait a moment."
Livina did not blame Ruben for his distraction. She nodded, then casually chatted with Cain.
At that moment, a servant approached Livina and said, "Viscount, someone outside claims to be Mr. Cain's friend and wishes to see him."
Hearing that someone had come looking for him, Cain could not help but feel surprised. In this world, aside from his guild companions, he did not seem to have any other friends.
The servant suddenly remembered something and quickly added, "That girl is also a member of Fairy Tail."
When Cain heard that, a crimson figure instantly flashed through his mind. He said to Livina:
"Then I'll go out for a moment."
Cain then headed to the entrance of the viscount's estate with the servant. There, he saw Erza quietly standing at the gate, pulling a small cart piled high with packages.
Erza happily waved when she saw Cain. Cain hurried over and opened the gate, asking curiously:
"Erza, why are you here?"
Erza carefully looked Cain over from head to toe. Only after confirming that he was not injured did she finally let out a sigh of relief.
She then explained that she had heard the Magic Council intended to seal off Mудorud, and had come because she was worried about him.
She had also brought plenty of food, along with clothing, bedding, and other necessities for every season of the year.
As he watched Erza continuously introduce the things on her little cart, Cain felt as if something had filled his heart.
He stepped forward and suddenly hugged Erza. "Erza, thank you."
Cain's sudden embrace made Erza's mind go blank as she was explaining what she had brought. She stammered, "Th-this is all... strawberry cake... the best arrangement."
Erza's incoherent babbling made Cain burst out laughing.
Once Erza came to her senses, her entire face began to burn, and even the tips of her ears turned red.
Smiling, Cain took Erza's hand. "Come on. Let's go meet Viscount Livina first."
