Background

Naruto grows up isolated in a small, filthy apartment, surviving largely on instant noodles and expired milk. He causes pranks and skips class to attract attention, believing that even being hated is preferable to being ignored. ANBU monitor him constantly, while the Third Hokage repeatedly tells him to stop causing trouble and get along with others. 16 17 25

After colliding with Shien Uchiha, Naruto is contacted in his mind by “Trumpet Nine.” Shien had used the encounter to inject chakra into Naruto, establish the connection, and plant a Heart Seed intended to slowly influence Naruto's mental inclinations. Through this contact, Naruto learns that he is the Nine-Tails' Jinchūriki and begins to understand why villagers call him a monster or demon fox. 17 28

Naruto initially tries to befriend Sasuke Uchiha at the Academy, recognizing Sasuke's loneliness despite Sasuke's coldness toward him.
