History

After Tang San was gravely injured in the Star Dou Forest, Xiao Wu and Yu Xiaogang cared for him at Nuoding Junior Soul Master Academy. Determined to identify and eventually avenge Tang San's attacker, she obtained a portrait of Jiang Xuan from Yu Xiaogang before leaving for Sunset Forest to gather more medicinal herbs for Tang San's treatment 15.

In Sunset Forest, Chrysanthemum Douluo Yue Guan identified her as a hundred-thousand-year soul beast in human form and suppressed her with soul power. Xiao Wu considered unsealing her true power to escape, despite the risk of losing her human-form cultivation, damaging her foundation, and dying at her next heavenly tribulation 26. Jiang Xuan intervened in Yue Guan's claim, but sought possession of Xiao Wu for the Eight Trigrams Furnace's need for powerful Heavenly Essence and Earthly Qi 26 27.

Yue Guan ultimately left Xiao Wu in a soul-skill prison, giving Jiang Xuan control of the confinement. The prison sealed her soul power and was intended to prevent escape for at least a month 30. When Xiao Wu recognized Jiang Xuan as the person who injured Tang San, she openly threatened him, causing him to abandon any consideration of releasing her after using her essence blood 30.

Appearance

Xiao Wu ordinarily appears in human form, concealing her identity as a hundred-thousand-year soul beast until Yue Guan recognizes it 26. During her captivity, repeated fire-refining injuries destroy her limbs; the White Bone Flesh-Regenerating Pill is able to regrow them, though one later treatment restores only part of the damage 31 40 41.

Personality

Before her capture, Xiao Wu is fiercely protective of Tang San. She presses Yu Xiaogang for information about his attacker, intends to remember Jiang Xuan's face, and travels alone to find medicine for Tang San despite the danger 15. When Yue Guan corners her, she remains determined enough to consider sacrificing her own transformed cultivation for a chance to survive 26.

Her imprisonment changes her behavior drastically. Initially defiant, she refuses to surrender her essence blood and attempts to conceal her connection to Tang San 31 41. After repeated torture and treatment with the White Bone Flesh-Regenerating Pill, she becomes terrified of Jiang Xuan and submits completely. Jiang Xuan concludes that the pill's side effect has made her personality more cowardly, further facilitating her control 40 42.

As a hundred-thousand-year Soft Bone Rabbit, Xiao Wu possesses valuable essence blood and life force sought by Jiang Xuan for alchemy and for replenishing the Eight Trigrams Furnace 27 31.

During her capture, she believes Tang San has failed his promise to protect her; later, fear drives her to deny knowing him before Jiang Xuan exposes the lie 26 41.
• Yu Xiaogang — Tang San's teacher and Xiao Wu's source of information about Jiang Xuan. He draws Jiang Xuan's portrait at her request and warns her not to seek revenge prematurely 15 41.

Captivity and Enforced Submission

Jiang Xuan first attempts to obtain Xiao Wu's essence blood through a demand for cooperation. When she refuses, he places her—still confined in Yue Guan's prison—inside the Eight Trigrams Furnace and uses the Six-Ding Divine Flame to refine her blood. The process burns away an arm and produces ten drops of essence blood 31.

Rather than let her die, Jiang Xuan preserves her life for what he calls “sustainable development”: he intends to heal Xiao Wu back to peak condition and extract more essence blood in the future 32. After collecting ingredients at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, he refines a White Bone Flesh-Regenerating Pill and restores her lost arm 40.

When Xiao Wu falsely claims not to know Tang San, Jiang Xuan subjects her to a second refinement, burning all four limbs and extracting further essence blood. A subsequent regeneration pill heals only part of the resulting damage 41. Following further recovery, Xiao Wu swears complete obedience; Jiang Xuan releases her from the prison but threatens to kill her for her hundred-thousand-year soul ring and soul bone if she attempts deception or escape 42.
