Background / History
Steve Rogers was found frozen in ice and revived at S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters after Leon assisted with the thawing process and used healing on him. Upon awakening, Steve initially believed he was still in his own era before fleeing in confusion. 159
Learning that seventy years had passed left Steve disoriented and isolated. He struggled with an unfamiliar, modern world and regretted failing to keep a date with Peggy Carter. S.H.I.E.L.D. gave him housing, a salary, support staff, and security while allowing him time to adapt. 160
Leon visited Steve at his apartment and disclosed that Hydra had survived and implied that Bucky Barnes might be alive. Steve challenged Leon to a wagered fight in exchange for answers. 161 Leon defeated him repeatedly throughout the night, but Steve’s resolve returned; he accepted that he still had a purpose and chose to continue fighting. 162 163
After reviewing S.H.I.E.L.D. files on Leon’s vigilantism, Steve judged Leon by the people he protected rather than the criminals he killed. He concluded that Leon was a trustworthy ally and formally joined S.H.I.E.L.D. 164
Appearance
Captain America is identified by his combat uniform, mask, and red, white, and blue star shield. He carries the shield on his left arm in battle and is often recognized immediately by civilians and other heroes. 162 204 475
- Carries an exceptionally durable red, white, and blue star shield. 162 204
- Uses a combat mask as part of his uniform. 204 442
- Later possesses a second shield nearly identical to his original, obtained from Leon. 530
Personality
Steve is principled, steadfast, and deeply protective of civilians. When assessing Leon’s record, he focuses on whether innocents and law-abiding people were protected, rather than ignoring the moral cost of Leon’s actions. 164
He is persistent to an extreme degree. Even after repeated defeats and injuries, he continues to stand up, learn from opponents, and fight. His determination is not reckless bravado alone; he treats combat as a responsibility and adapts when allies offer better strategic judgment. 162 334 348
Steve is also trustworthy enough to become the Avengers’ usual spokesperson and a stabilizing leader during disputes. Other heroes believe he will not retreat or compromise when danger arrives. 439
His greatest emotional vulnerability is Bucky Barnes. Steve spends years investigating evidence of Bucky’s survival, struggles to fight him while Hydra controls him, and later feels guilty about withholding Bucky’s role in Tony Stark’s parents’ deaths. 286 293 309
