Background / History

Konoha was originally founded jointly by the Senju and Uchiha Clans. By the beginning of the story, it was governed by the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, and composed of numerous clans with competing interests and loyalties 1 69 152.

The Uchiha Clan's position within Konoha had deteriorated over years of political suppression. Although the clan retained authority through the Military Police Force, it was increasingly excluded from central power and from placing its members in other village positions 2 26. Konoha's leadership and other clans also blamed the Uchiha for security failures following Orochimaru's activities, further worsening internal distrust 26.

Orochimaru's secret experiments on humans and animals were uncovered on Konoha's outskirts, confirming that one of the village's elite shinobi had been operating a hidden laboratory within its sphere of influence 9. His subsequent establishment of Otogakure exposed Konoha to an additional external threat 21 23.

Uchiha–Konoha Conflict

Danzo's demotion and the formal dissolution of Root temporarily eased tensions, while Itachi was transferred from ANBU service to the Ninja Academy as director of academic affairs 69 70. The underlying conflict persisted: Uchiha members withdrew from ANBU, weakening the force, while Konoha's leadership continued to oppose the clan's growing influence 109.

The Uchiha used the Chunin Exams to display their strength publicly and challenge Konoha's political order. Itachi organized the examination grounds and instituted a survival-and-mining round in Grotto Forest, complete with Fire Cards, authorized merchants, and scroll exchanges 111 136.

After the destruction of Root's remaining forces and a major loss of ANBU elites, the Uchiha demanded a share of Konoha's highest authority. They ultimately threatened to leave if the village could not guarantee their security or meet their political demands 149 152.

The Uchiha Clan subsequently founded the Uchiha Shinobi Village in the Land of Rice Fields and reached a truce agreement with Konoha 153. The truce did not endure: Itachi later used Ryūchi Cave summons and genjutsu-controlled patrol shinobi to launch an assault on Konoha 213.

Destruction and Reconstruction

Itachi's Susanoo attack breached Konoha's city wall and produced a catastrophic blast that reduced much of the village to level ground. The explosion created a massive crater, killed or severely wounded countless shinobi, and destroyed the Third Hokage; surviving Konoha forces largely dispersed or surrendered 226.

Following the collapse of the Land of Fire's former power structure, the Uchiha Clan rebuilt Konoha using technology acquired from Sky Country. Construction vehicles, excavators, modern cars, and mechs replaced much of the old infrastructure, while city walls and relics of the previous era were removed 234. In the later transformed Konoha, the Military Police Force no longer wore shinobi forehead protectors, marking the beginning of a new order 276.

Appearance

Before its destruction, Konoha was a densely built settlement of intricate streets, protected by surrounding forest and substantial defensive walls. Its outskirts provided concealed positions for patrol units monitoring potential infiltrators 2 213 226.

• Forest perimeter — Dense foliage around the village obstructed sightlines and enabled patrols to conduct surveillance and counter-surveillance 213.
• City walls — Large defensive walls enclosed the settlement before being breached during Itachi's assault 226.
• Teahouses and public spaces — Teahouses functioned as major gathering places for news, rumors, storytelling, and public discussion 69.
• Post-reconstruction cityscape — Modern machinery, vehicles, excavation equipment, and Sky Country technology became visible across the rebuilt former ruins 234.

• Uchiha Clan — Co-founder clan that became politically marginalized within Konoha before openly challenging its leadership, departing to form the Uchiha Shinobi Village, and eventually rebuilding Konoha after its destruction 2 152 153 226 234.
• Hiruzen Sarutobi — Third Hokage and head of Konoha's government during its internal conflict with the Uchiha Clan; he was killed in the village's destruction 1 149 226.
