Team 7 appointment

While seeking “inspiration” outside a bathhouse, Jiraiya receives Hiruzen Sarutobi’s order to train Minato Namikaze, Nine-Tails jinchūriki Mirai Uzumaki, and an Uchiha student listed in the roster as Izumi Uchiha. He initially protests that the assignment interferes with his search for the Child of Prophecy, but accepts the team. 32

Jiraiya conducts Konoha’s bell test with only two bells, intending to judge whether the Genin will sacrifice for one another rather than compete selfishly. After the three students each offer to withdraw for their teammates, he passes all of them and formally recognizes them as Team 7. 33 34

He notices Mirai’s grief over Mito’s death during introductions and resolves to guide him properly rather than press him about it immediately. 32

Early missions and training

Jiraiya leads Team 7 through D-rank work before assessing their chakra natures and assigning training suited to each student. He gives Minato Wind Release fundamentals, Zhili Lightning Release: Earth Walk, and Mirai the Shadow Clone Jutsu, then introduces tree climbing for chakra-control practice. 35 38

At the Rain front, Jiraiya fights beside Tsunade and Orochimaru against Hanzō. After gathering Natural Energy, he unveils Sage Mode and briefly gains the upper hand, but his Sage Jutsu chakra is depleted during the battle. 83 88 89

The Rain orphans

After the war’s conclusion, Jiraiya identifies Nagato’s Rinnegan and concludes that Nagato is the Child of Prophecy he has sought. Believing the child could bring either peace or destruction to the shinobi world, he remains in the Land of Rain to teach Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan survival skills, ninjutsu, and “the right values.” 92 93

His commitment is not always consistent: after Konan, Yahiko, and Nagato are endangered while he is away, Mirai reprimands him for neglecting the children he chose to protect. 100

War tempers his usual humor. After Tsunade reminds him that Chiyo has lost family members to the conflict, he recognizes the weight of the loss rather than continuing to laugh it off. 83
