Background / History

Xiao Zhan is the head of the Xiao Household and Xiao Yan's father. Before Lan Suyin's death, he and Lan had traveled to the Central Plains; however, he knew little of her background and believed her death had been an accident. 1 5

He initially had to balance the household elders' attitudes toward both Xiao Yan and Xiao Ni, who were widely dismissed as untalented. Xiao Ni's revealed strength and resources later gave Xiao Zhan greater confidence in asserting his authority within the household. 11

Personality

Xiao Zhan is protective of his family and inclined to trust Xiao Ni's character even when Xiao Ni is accused of cultivating an evil art. He investigates the dispute with Xiao Ning before reaching a verdict rather than accepting the accusation at face value. 9 10

As patriarch, he is pragmatic and attentive to the Xiao Household's future. He recognizes the value of Foundation Elixir and the Wind Scroll Formula, while seeking to make the latter available to household members with wind affinity. 10 30

Siphon Palm Incident

Xiao Zhan summons Xiao Ni to the council hall after Xiao Ning accuses him of using an evil art. He hears Xiao Ni's account, learns the value and proper use of Foundation Elixir, and punishes Xiao Ning's group for trespassing, damaging Xiao Ni's door, and wasting the medicinal liquid. 9 10

He subsequently learns that Xiao Ni has concealed his status as a Fighter and responds with growing appreciation for his potential. 11

Misty Cloud Sect Visit

Xiao Zhan receives Ge Ye, Nalan Yanran, and Liu Ling at the Xiao Household council hall. He is frustrated by Xiao Yan's late arrival, but is pleased when Xiao Yan remains composed before the sect's representatives. 14

When Nalan Yanran seeks to annul her engagement to Xiao Yan, Xiao Zhan is enraged by the insult to his son and household. He ultimately lets Xiao Yan accept the Three-Year Pact and proudly supports Xiao Yan's repudiation of Nalan Yanran. 15 16

During Xiao Ni's escalating confrontation with Ge Ye, Xiao Zhan manifests Wild Lion Rage and offers to fight Ge Ye himself, though Ge Ye insists on challenging Xiao Ni. 18

Strengthening the Xiao Household

After Xiao Ni gives him the High Xuan Tier Wind Scroll Formula, Xiao Zhan proposes placing it in the Battle Qi Pavilion so every suitable Xiao Household member can cultivate it. Xiao Ni agrees. 30

He also plans to preserve the household's Foundation Elixir until Xiao Yan reaches the appropriate stage, anticipating resistance from the elders and intending to invoke Xiao Ni's mysterious master if necessary. 31
