Rubbing her eyes, Fengling sleepily looked at the clock by her bed.
"Wah! It's so late!"
Pushing herself up, Fengling hurriedly left her comfortable bed.
Through the window, she could see that the sun had already drifted to the west.
She simply let down her messy hair and tidied it up. Since it was already evening, Fengling did not tie it back again and prepared to head out with her long straight hair down.
After quickly washing up, she changed into a fitted summer off-the-shoulder dress.
There were no strict clothing requirements during off-duty hours, so Fengling changed into more comfortable casual clothes.
After leaving her room, Fengling found the residential area of Rhodes Island growing lively as well.
After all, it was time for many people to change shifts. Familiar operators walked around in twos and threes, either grabbing a simple meal together or making plans for the evening.
As Fengling checked her personal terminal, she also noticed a non-emergency shipwide broadcast.
It was roughly about holding a simple dinner at the Rhodes Island operators' cafeteria that evening to celebrate the safe return of the various reserve teams. Anyone aboard the ship was free to attend.
It was mainly an excuse to lighten the mood. Work was generally not assigned to operators on the first day after the ship set sail, and once the ship entered a stable route, everyone aboard would become relatively free.
There was still some time, so Fengling decided to take care of a few things first.
"I'll go to the Medical Department first."
The Medical Department was the busiest department on Rhodes Island. Someone was basically always on duty, just in case an Infected person aboard the ship encountered an emergency.
Fengling planned to see whether Kal'tsit had time. Kal'tsit was extremely busy, so if possible, Fengling wanted to settle her official operator status first, then ask the Medical Department staff to conduct an examination and record the Monitoring Ring's data.
Strolling through the crowd and greeting people around her from time to time, Fengling entered the elevator and arrived on the Medical Department floor.
This floor was always the busiest floor on Rhodes Island.
After all, aside from operators, Rhodes Island also took in some Oripathy patients, so this place was always brightly lit.
"Take two of these pills every day, then come back for another checkup in a week!"
"Your physical condition is good. Please make sure to maintain your current daily routine."
"Hey! If you keep abusing your body and refuse to listen to me, I'm going to beat you up!!"
The Medic operators, each with their own personalities, all treated patients differently.
But here, they shared one identity—doctors.
And one shared goal—treating illnesses and saving lives.
"Gavial, you can't bully people, you know~"
As she passed Gavial's consultation room, Fengling mischievously poked her head in and teased her.
That loudmouthed and fierce doctor was naturally Gavial.
"Oh? Fengling! Heh, looks like it's about time for your regular checkup too, isn't it?" Gavial grinned when she saw Fengling. "What do you say? Want your big sis to take a look?"
Perfect. She had just found herself a doctor.
"Sure, then I'll trouble you, Gavial!" Fengling clasped her hands together and blinked gratefully. "But I need to find Doctor Kal'tsit first. I'll come back in a little while!"
"Sure, go handle your business. I'll wait for you!"
"Then I'm off!"
After leaving Gavial's consultation room, Fengling had barely gone a few steps before she heard Gavial's booming voice lecturing another patient.
After all, patients who did not take care of their own bodies could really make doctors anxious.
Fengling headed deeper into the Medical Department.
After more than a month, Fengling arrived at Kal'tsit's office again.
But this time, she did not feel as nervous as before.
"Now that I'm familiar with everyone, there really isn't anything left to be afraid of!"
With a relieved smile on her face, Fengling pressed the visitor button and opened the door to Doctor Kal'tsit's office.
The first thing she saw was Warfarin wearing an eerie smile.
Under the dim lighting, Warfarin had her tongue curled out and a dropper pinched in her hand, seemingly preparing to sneak a taste of the blood inside.
It was a complete horror scene.
"Sorry, wrong room!"
Fengling turned and ran!
She had almost forgotten! There was a Bloodfiend doctor in Doctor Kal'tsit's office too!
"Hey! Don't go, don't go!"
Warfarin hurriedly ran out, her swift figure quickly catching Fengling by the hem of her clothes.
So fast!
Fengling froze for a moment.
Although Warfarin was a doctor, a Bloodfiend like her was naturally no less nimble than anyone else.
"Well, um, Doctor Warfarin, aren't you doing an experiment? I just went to the wrong room!"
Fengling said, breaking out in a cold sweat.
She was still a little nervous around this Medical Department senior.
After all, from the day she joined Rhodes Island, Fengling had known that she possessed certain special traits.
In a Bloodfiend's eyes, she was probably a walking bag of delicious blood.
"Haha, what are you talking about? You saw it wrong just now. You came to find Kal'tsit, right? She mentioned you to me earlier. Just wait for her a little while. That surgery of hers should be almost done, and she'll be back soon."
Warfarin gave an ingratiating laugh, seemingly hoping Fengling would forget what she had just seen.
But Warfarin's words forced Fengling to abandon the thought of leaving. After all, she could not make Doctor Kal'tsit wait for her.
Kal'tsit's daily surgery workload was terrifying, and she rarely had time to rest.
Fengling knew what mattered more.
She did not want to waste any more of Kal'tsit's time.
So she could only follow Warfarin back into their office.
Sitting in a chair off to one side, Fengling passed the time by using her personal terminal to browse recent news.
At last, Warfarin shuffled over to Fengling's side.
The Misunderstanding About Giving Blood
Warfarin approached Fengling with an embarrassed smile and asked, "Hehehe, Fengling, could I have just a tiny bit of your blood? Really, just a tiny bit!"
To make Fengling more willing, Warfarin added, "I can pay you too. Ten thousand Lungmen Dollars each time! About the amount in the smallest blood bag!"
Ten thousand Lungmen Dollars was truly a huge sum to Fengling.
The smallest blood bag held around two hundred milliliters, so the payment Warfarin offered was absolutely sky-high.
"...Doctor Warfarin, your offer is definitely tempting."
Fengling sighed. "But you know, even though I'm not exactly well-off, I have enough to get by. I don't care that much about money."
Seeing Fengling's obvious refusal, Warfarin looked deeply regretful and simply stared at Fengling with pitiful eyes.
Fengling calmly stared back.
Warfarin continued looking at Fengling with those pitiful eyes.
Fengling shifted her gaze to the side.
Stare...
Fengling's ears trembled.
Fine... Fengling was the sort of fox who responded to softness, not force.
Warfarin herself was a little strange, but she truly was a dedicated and responsible doctor. She was also one of the seniors who had laid the foundation for the Rhodes Island Medical Department.
More importantly, during Fengling's first few important examinations after arriving at Rhodes Island, as well as some of her later short-term routine checkups, Warfarin had always been involved.
Furthermore, because of Warfarin's special nature as a Bloodfiend, some of the care advice she gave Fengling was exceptionally effective and unique.
Fengling's attitude softened.
"All right... Doctor Warfarin, I'll agree..."
Fengling lowered her head, her face flushed red as she murmured softly.
Warfarin's eyes immediately lit up.
Then, in the next instant, she spat blood.
Fengling lifted her loose hair, temporarily removed her Monitoring Ring, and exposed her fair neck. Her shoulders, already bare, now hung in an even more relaxed posture.
Perhaps she was very nervous inside. Her sideways glance was filled with a pitiable look, as though she were waiting to be plucked at someone's leisure.
Warfarin hurriedly covered her cheeks, yet the useless nosebleed still seeped through her fingers.
Both of them were girls, and Fengling's current appearance alone would not have been enough to make Warfarin lose herself.
But unfortunately, Warfarin was also a Bloodfiend.
Even if some legends about Sarkaz Bloodfiends were fabricated, they were not entirely without basis.
A flawless, adorable, beautiful girl with a slightly frightened look in her eyes, yet still baring her neck and waiting for a Bloodfiend to partake of her...
That kind of destructive power was simply too terrifying for a Bloodfiend.
"W-what are you doing?!"
Warfarin hurriedly backed away several steps. With one hand, she fumbled across the office desk until she finally found a packet of cotton balls and stuffed them into her bleeding nose.
But from her exposed sharp canine teeth and her faintly crimson pupils, it was clear that Warfarin's urge to drink blood had been thoroughly triggered.
Huh?
Fengling was not stupid. Though she had made a mistaken assumption, she quickly realized what had happened.
So formal Bloodfiend feeding did not involve directly sinking their teeth into someone's neck?
Fengling could not really be blamed for that. Sarkaz Bloodfiends were people most ordinary individuals might never see in their entire lives, and what little people knew about the race was limited to fabricated novels and plays.
Combined with Warfarin's improper behavior, Fengling had assumed that her habit of secretly tasting blood now and then was only something she did in unusual situations.
So Fengling truly had no idea how Bloodfiends handled their normal dietary needs!
"Um... don't Bloodfiends eat like that?"
The blush on Fengling's face deepened. This time, it was not only embarrassment—there was also a trace of annoyance.
All that mental preparation for nothing!
"Come on, that did happen, but what era do you think this is! Science is so advanced now. Can't we make some progress? Look at how hygienic these prepared blood collection devices are!"
Warfarin said in a muffled voice through her plugged nostrils.
"Girl, stop reading so much of that written stuff. It's harmful! Look, it's full of slander against Bloodfiends! Uh... though maybe not all of it is slander."
Even now, plenty of old Bloodfiends still liked that kind of bloody feeding.
At this very moment, Warfarin even felt that she understood them a little.
"I! I had to struggle with myself too!"
No matter how mature she was, Fengling was still fundamentally a seventeen-year-old girl. She still had some childish innocence left within her.
For something she had never experienced before, she had genuinely believed Warfarin would do what those stories described. That was why she had struggled so much to make up her mind and let Warfarin draw her blood.
If it had been with a blood collection device, Fengling would have agreed much more easily.
After all, on Rhodes Island, especially under Kal'tsit's watch, it was certainly safe for professional doctors to handle it. They would not mess around.
"All right... my..." Warfarin rubbed her forehead, seeming a little dizzy and overwhelmed.
