Background / History

Jonas was born into a family that revered the Enigma gender. While pregnant with him, his mother was made to take banned drugs intended to increase his likelihood of becoming an Enigma; the drugs instead left his differentiation unstable. His father concealed the condition, withdrew from the joint Enigma research project with the Wan family, and took its researchers to continue treatment privately. 158 165

At age ten, Jonas attended an Enigma research symposium and met Wan Fuqi, another potential Enigma differentiator. Jonas was talkative, intrusive, and intensely curious about Wan Fuqi, while Wan Fuqi found him unbearable and removed his hearing aid to ignore him. This was their only childhood meeting. 157 158

To stabilize Jonas's differentiation, his father selected twenty-six highly compatible children with over a 99% probability of becoming high-quality Alphas. Personality
