Background / History

Gojo recruited Xia Jie into Jujutsu High after recognizing the danger and value of his unusual Cursed Technique. He guaranteed Xia Jie's protection from the Higher-Ups, then negotiated a less restrictive Binding Vow that prohibited Xia from materializing Imaginary Cursed Spirits stronger than himself without permission 12 13.

He is one of the few proponents of structural reform within Japanese Jujutsu Society. His program calls for broader admissions to Jujutsu High, public disclosure of the jujutsu world, and reorganization of the school's leadership. Unable to reform the system through force alone, he chose to cultivate capable students and allies who could change it from within 101 176.

Gojo protected Yuji Itadori after Yuji became Sukuna's vessel. He rejected Headquarters' execution order, placed Yuji under Jujutsu High supervision, and accepted responsibility for killing him himself should Sukuna fully resurrect 117. After Yuji's apparent death, Gojo concealed his revival so Yuji could train before being targeted again 176.

Following the discovery that Suguru Geto's grave was empty, Gojo investigated the possibility that his deceased friend’s body had been stolen. When Kenjaku appeared in Geto's body, Gojo immediately recognized that he was an impostor and fought alongside Xia Jie to destroy him 183 325 330.

During the Shibuya conflict, Gojo fought Jogo, Hanami, Choso, and Kurama Shōbō while the curse faction used civilians and Transfigured Humans to constrain him. After incapacitating the station with a 0.2-second Unlimited Void and exorcising 1,000 Transfigured Humans, he was ambushed, wounded, and sealed in the Prison Realm by the Nine-Tailed Fox 346 350.

Xia Jie later unsealed him with the Ghost Bailiff. Though still injured from the Prison Realm's suppression of his Cursed Energy, Gojo returned to support his students and helped Xia Jie extract Sukuna's soul from Yuji's body 401 402.

Personality

Gojo is outwardly playful, eccentric, and prone to teasing students and colleagues, but his confidence rests on overwhelming strength and sharp judgment. He remains calm in combat, often taunting opponents to expose their abilities or provoke mistakes 261 290.

He is fiercely protective of his students. He repeatedly opposes the Higher-Ups when he believes their rulings threaten Xia Jie or Yuji, while still treating difficult missions as opportunities for his students to grow 117 176 284. His teaching philosophy is rooted in creating “strong, intelligent comrades” who can reform the corrupt jujutsu establishment 176.

Despite his casual manner, Gojo carries lasting grief over Suguru Geto and reacts with intense anger to the theft and use of Geto's body by Kenjaku 183 325.
