Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cursed Womb Form | 2 3 | Imaginary Cursed Spirits require Cursed Energy to construct a spirit core and condense a Cursed Womb; the Energy invested determines their maximum growth potential. |
| Legend Accumulation | 2 4 | Newly materialized Imaginary Cursed Spirits must gain Legend Points to evolve. Legend Points can supply Cursed Energy, intelligence, communication, and Cursed Technique skills. |
| Complete Form | 2 4 71 | Once sufficient Legend Points are gathered, an Imaginary Cursed Spirit can manifest in its complete form with its defined abilities. Spirits based on established legends may materialize directly in complete form. |
| Re-materialization after Exorcism | 2 | An exorcised Imaginary Cursed Spirit may be materialized again, but under the same conditions as a pre-existing legend-based spirit. |
Origin and Nature
Cursed Spirits are physical manifestations of curses: Cursed Energy leaked by humans through emotions such as anger, fear, hatred, regret, and shame. Locations where such feelings accumulate—particularly schools and hospitals—are prone to producing them. 37 39
Most ordinary people produce Cursed Energy but cannot retain or consciously use it, causing it to dissipate into the environment. As this Energy accumulates, it may form a Cursed Spirit. 3 39
Ordinary people generally cannot see Cursed Spirits unless they possess the necessary talent or are under unusually intense emotional strain. Cursed Spirits also conceal their auras while inactive, making them difficult to locate even for sorcerers. 37 81
Intelligence and Communication
Cursed Spirits vary greatly in intelligence. Most act according to fixed instincts or rules and can speak only simple phrases, while those capable of normal communication are considered rare. 7 138
- Shadow Maru could speak and pursue a specific objective, repeatedly asking strangers whether they had seen its “mother.” 5 7
- The Special-Grade spirit behind the Ghost-Catching Game could impose complex domain rules but could not meaningfully communicate with Xia Jie. 85 87
- Even Cursed Spirits are shown to possess an instinctive fear of death. 66
Classification
Cursed Spirits are ranked by grade, with Special Grade representing the highest documented classification. For Imaginary Cursed Spirits, the Cursed Energy used to form a Cursed Womb determines its potential grade. 3
| Grade | Cursed Energy required to construct an Imaginary Cursed Womb | Documented example |
|---|---|---|
| Grade 4 | 50–100 | Infant Cursed Spirits were originally Grade 4 before being strengthened through Spirit Feeding. 3 65 |
| Grade 3 | 100–500 | Jujutsu High initially classified Shadow Maru as Grade 3 based on its faint residual aura. 3 5 |
| Grade 2 | 500–1,000 | Several blood-fed Infant Cursed Spirits approached Grade 2 strength. 3 65 |
| Grade 1 | 1,000–2,000 | Deceiver Ghost and Man in the Mirror manifested as complete Grade 1 Cursed Spirits. 3 71 90 |
| Special Grade | At least 2,000 | Thunder Maru and Shadow Maru were created with approximately 2,050 points each, giving them Special-Grade growth potential. 3 |
Abilities & Traits
Cursed Energy Absorption
Cursed Spirits can grow by absorbing unconsciously leaked human Cursed Energy. 66
- Absorbing another Cursed Spirit is normally dangerous because the consumed spirit is a conscious curse; Xia Jie compares this to poison that causes “indigestion.” 66
- Cursed Spirits can consume Cursed Objects, which may greatly increase their power or grant them the Object’s Cursed Technique. 66 355
- Powerful Cursed Objects remain dangerous even to Cursed Spirits; Special-Grade Objects such as Sukuna’s Fingers may overwhelm a spirit that cannot withstand their curses. 355
- A Cursed Object’s original owner cannot normally resurrect within a Cursed Spirit’s nonhuman body. 355
Cursed Techniques
Individual Cursed Spirits may possess unique Cursed Techniques, ranging from elemental attacks to soul manipulation, illusion, fate control, and domain-based rules. 3 71 90 310 400
- Cursed Techniques can be strengthened or altered through external Cursed Energy, Cursed Objects, or Legend Points. 4 65 356
- Stronger techniques and higher intelligence require substantially more Legend Points for Imaginary Cursed Spirits. 4
- Some techniques carry Binding Vows that impose conditions, weaknesses, or maintenance requirements. 3 6 71 90
Domains and Innate Domains
Powerful Cursed Spirits can create Innate Domains or deploy Domains with specialized rules. 20 85
- The Ghost-Catching Game Domain turned everyone nearby into players in a deadly hide-and-seek game; attacks against its owner were ineffective while the game’s rules remained in force. 85
- Rule-breakers within that Domain were targeted by ghostly “Referees,” who could transform them into ghosts upon contact. 86
- Domains need not rely solely on a sure-hit attack; they may instead enforce a set of binding rules. 85
Concealment
Inactive Cursed Spirits can hide their presence, preventing sorcerers from simply locating and exorcising every spirit in an area. Higher-grade spirits are generally better at concealing their auras and may hide inside specialized Innate Domains. 37
Imaginary Cursed Spirits
Imaginary Cursed Spirits are created through Xia Jie’s inherited Cursed Technique, Imaginary Becomes Real, which materializes legends as Cursed Spirits. 2 51
| Rule | Effect |
|---|---|
| Unique origin | Xia Jie cannot imagine a Cursed Spirit with the same origin as one that already exists. 2 |
| Binding Vows | Defined abilities automatically generate Binding Vows that affect both the created spirit and, in applicable cases, Xia Jie when it is summoned. 2 |
| Cursed Energy investment | More Cursed Energy used to construct the Cursed Womb raises the spirit’s maximum potential. 2 3 |
| Legend Points | A newly created spirit must gain public recognition and Legend Points to evolve and replenish expended Cursed Energy. 2 4 |
| Existing legends | A spirit based on an established legend with no real-world prototype can directly materialize in complete form. 2 |
| Control | Imaginary Cursed Spirits based on existing legends do not automatically obey Xia Jie; he must subdue them through his own strength. 2 87 |
Unlike ordinary Cursed Spirit Manipulation, Xia Jie shares a sensory connection with his Imaginary Cursed Spirits and can issue commands through mental intent rather than speech. 88 247 371
Interaction with Humans
Contracts
Contracts between ordinary humans and Cursed Spirits are extremely dangerous. Chino Mie agreed to become the “mother” of the Infant Cursed Spirits in exchange for their promise not to harm Liangshan Sachiko; the agreement resulted in a Cursed Spirit growing inside her body. 70 71
Spirit Feeding
Liangshan Sachiko’s Spirit Feeding allows her to strengthen and temporarily command Cursed Spirits by feeding them her blood. 65
- Blood saturated with Cursed Energy is highly desirable to Cursed Spirits and increases their strength. 65
- The control period is limited; once it ends, the fed spirits may seek out and devour Sachiko for more blood. 65
- Stronger spirits require larger amounts of blood and are more difficult to control. 65
- Repeated feeding raised some Infant Cursed Spirits from Grade 4 toward Grade 2. 65
Subjugation and Containment
Cursed Spirits can be subdued and used through specialized techniques, though the method varies by user. The Iwasan Clan’s Spirit Possession Technique confines one contracted Cursed Spirit within a Cursed Tool, allowing both the spirit and tool to grow stronger through supplied Cursed Energy. 107
If the tool remains intact, a Cursed Spirit housed through Spirit Possession can be reborn within it even after exorcism. 107
Distinction from Shikigami
Shikigami and Cursed Spirits may both take physical forms condensed from Cursed Energy, but they are not identical. Megumi Fushiguro’s Divine Dogs resemble Cursed Spirits physically, yet lack their eerie aura because their Cursed Energy originates directly from Megumi. 65
