Background

More than a thousand years ago, the Nine-Tailed Fox ruled Japan as one of its most powerful curses. She commanded countless Cursed Spirits and Monsters, turning the country into a haven for demons until Jujutsu Sorcerers united against her and sealed her after several costly battles. Her body became Sesshōseki, which scattered across the world and retained her will and power. 124

Legends identify Daji, consort of King Zhou, and Tamamo-no-Mae, concubine of Emperor Toba, as manifestations of the Nine-Tailed Fox. Her surviving followers spent centuries seeking Sesshōseki hosts to restore her. 124

An ordinary human host cannot endure a Sesshōseki's malicious will for long and may mutate into a monster. Before one earlier incarnation faded, the Fox instructed Kurama Shōbō to gather the stones and prepare for her eventual resurrection. 337

Appearance

The Nine-Tailed Fox commonly presents herself as an exceptionally beautiful, mature, and seductive woman. Her form varies with her vessel, including Sangawa Kazuhiro, Iwasan Mei, Yomi, and Tsuchimiya Kagura. 141 205 339 393

  • Her eyes can become vertical beast-like slits, with pronounced veins around them when enraged. 141
  • She possesses an overwhelming, slaughterous Cursed Energy presence that terrifies nearby living beings. 144
  • Her transformed combat form can manifest nine tails. 397
  • The Immortal Wind Cloud Body Technique can render her hair and body crystalline and translucent while healing severe wounds. 382
  • Within Yomi's inner world, she resembles Yomi but appears more mature and seductive. 339

Personality

The Nine-Tailed Fox is imperious, prideful, and accustomed to absolute obedience. She considers herself above lesser curses and humans alike, and her presence alone compels fear and submission; Mahito and Jogo nearly gouged out their own eyes after receiving her command. 341

She is also calculating rather than honor-bound. Against threats such as Gojo Satoru, she prefers ambushes, attrition, manipulation, and exploiting vulnerabilities over a direct contest. She has no interest in an evenly matched battle if she can eliminate an opponent before they become dangerous. 349

Despite her composure, she is easily provoked by humiliation, challenges to her beauty, and reminders of Jiang Shang. Her impatience and tendency to underestimate opponents create openings for fighters such as Xia Jie and Okkotsu. 141 384

Abilities & Skills

Sesshōseki Incarnation

The Fox's will and Cursed Energy persist through nine Sesshōseki left behind after her death. A host implanted with a stone can serve as a vessel for her temporary descent or resurrection.

  • A single Sesshōseki allowed her to descend upon Sangawa Kazuhiro with roughly one-ninth of her strength. 141
  • Four Sesshōseki fully awakened her consciousness within Yomi. 337
  • Gathering all nine restored her complete power. 393
  • She can exploit vessels, conceal her presence, and use a host's memories to gain intelligence on enemies. 349 363
  • Her planned True Realm Rebirth would use Okkotsu Yuta as an avatar and seize his body. 393

Eye of Enlightenment

The Sesshōseki associated with the Eye of Enlightenment grants extraordinary perception and control over Cursed Energy.

  • Allows her to read and anticipate attacks with precision comparable to the Six Eyes. 394
  • Lets her accurately judge trajectories even against high-speed attacks. 395
  • Enables the near-seamless simultaneous use of multiple Cursed Techniques. 395
  • Supports her extreme-speed combat style alongside the Wind Cloud techniques. 395

Illusion Techniques

The Nine-Tailed Fox casts illusions through eye contact and uses them to deceive, terrify, or mentally dominate targets. 362

  • Fox Mind Technique — reads a target's thoughts and feelings, then traps them in a lifelike mental world shaped around those thoughts. Outside stimulation can break the illusion. 381
  • Naraku Vision Technique — manifests the target's fear; psychological damage from the illusion can become physical injury. 362
  • Targets with unwavering resolve can resist her illusions, as Okkotsu and Todo did. 381
  • Her commands can pressure targets into self-harm, though strong curses may resist them. 341

Immortal Wind Cloud Body Technique

A body-strengthening and movement technique that enhances the Fox's speed, reactions, and recovery. 362 382

  • Enables rapid movement that leaves afterimages and can evade close-range attacks. 363
  • Heals injuries faster than Reverse Cursed Technique, including damage to her heart and severed fingers. 382 363
  • Her body becomes extremely fragile while using its most extreme healing state, though her speed simultaneously reaches its peak. 382
  • The related Wind Body Cloud Form Technique becomes less stable as speed increases, because her body grows lighter. 393

Domain and Anti-Domain Techniques

The Nine-Tailed Fox is a skilled domain combatant with both offensive and defensive countermeasures.

  • Domain Expansion: Tamamo's Garden — deployed against Okkotsu's Authentic Mutual Love. 383
  • Uses Domain Amplification to neutralize an enemy domain's sure-hit effect while retaining mobility within it. 143
  • Can switch between Domain Amplification and her innate techniques quickly enough to frustrate Todo's Boogie Woogie. 382
  • Uses Hollow Wicker Basket to defend against Cursed Techniques originating within a Domain and to escape Xia Jie's Domain. 398 399

Offensive Cursed Techniques

The Fox possesses a broad arsenal of destructive techniques empowered by her immense Cursed Energy.

  • Butterfly Dance: Scale Palm — injects Cursed Energy into a target's body with a poisoning-like effect. 145
  • Plunder — removes any body part she touches; she used it to take Xia Jie's heart and intended to use it on Okkotsu. 393 395
  • Condensation — produces concentrated Cursed Energy beams capable of piercing Okkotsu's chest. 395
  • Iron Wall — defensive technique used to withstand Okkotsu's Thunderclap. 395
  • Tailed Beast Bomb — a massive red-and-black Cursed Energy blast. 398
  • Uses a Cursed Spirit-derived blade containing Sukuna's Finger to perform Dismantle. 381

Equipment

  • Naginata — used while fighting Byakuei. 205
  • Black folding fan / iron fan — used to generate powerful gales and block attacks such as Piercing Blood. 393 394
  • Cursed Spirit blade containing Sukuna's Finger — grants access to Sukuna's Dismantle. 381
  • Faceless's mask — used to conceal her appearance and presence while observing the battle against Gojo. 349

Relationships

  • Yomi — primary resurrection vessel. The Fox initially suppresses her consciousness, then forms a contract to divide control: Yomi rules during the day, while the Fox rules at night. 337 349
  • Xia Jie — longstanding enemy who inherits Jiang Shang's bloodline. The Fox orchestrated Yomi's suffering, repeatedly clashes with Xia Jie, and ultimately escapes his Domain in a weakened state. 141 398 399
  • Jiang ShangXia Jie's ancestor and an ancient adversary whose memory still enrages the Fox. 141
  • Kurama Shōbō — loyal right-hand subordinate who gathers Sesshōseki and engineers her resurrection through Yomi. 265 337
  • Hakuzōsu — one of her two famed right-hand subordinates alongside Kurama Shōbō. 265
  • Faceless — ambitious Special-Grade Monster subordinate. The Fox manipulates her pursuit of Sesshōseki, while Faceless seeks to replace her as King of Curses. 205 253
  • Mahito and Jogo — recruits to her Shibuya alliance. She accepts their plan to seal Gojo but demands Sukuna's Fingers in return. 342
  • Gojo Satoru — enemy she helps seal in the Prison Realm after waiting for an opportunity to exploit his exhaustion. 349 350
  • Okkotsu Yuta and Aoi Todo — major opponents during Shibuya. Their coordinated attacks wound, restrain, and temporarily disable her, but she kills Todo during their battle. 382 384
  • Sukuna — rival curse sovereign toward whom she holds open enmity; she seeks possession of his Fingers. 342

Story Role / Major Arcs

First descent and clash with Xia Jie

The Fox temporarily descends through Sangawa Kazuhiro's Sesshōseki, confirms Xia Jie's Jiang Clan bloodline, and admits to arranging Yomi's suffering. She effortlessly repels Thunder Maru, traps Xia Jie in her Domain, and is eventually beheaded after he exploits weaknesses in her Domain. 141 144 145

Sesshōseki schemes

After facing Byakuei, the Fox directs Faceless to obtain its two Sesshōseki while carefully managing Faceless's growing ambition. Later, she secretly restrains Faceless and tampers with the Sesshōseki to ensure she can profit from the conflict, appearing to Xia Jie only as a phantom before escaping with Faceless's mask. 205 253

Resurrection through Yomi

Kurama Shōbō implants four Sesshōseki into Yomi, allowing the Fox's consciousness to fully awaken within her. Yomi initially resists in the Black Lake of her inner world, but eventually agrees to share their body under a day-and-night arrangement. 337 339 349

Shibuya Incident

The Fox allies with Mahito and Jogo, supports the plan to seal Gojo, and personally helps force Gojo near the Prison Realm. Once Gojo is sealed, she remains behind to guard the Prison Realm and commands her followers to intercept approaching Jujutsu Sorcerers. 342 350 354

Battles with Okkotsu and Todo

While seeking Yuji Itadori, she encounters Mei Mei and Ui Ui before Okkotsu and Todo intervene. She adapts to Boogie Woogie, overcomes her illusion's failure against Todo and Okkotsu, heals grave injuries, and kills Todo after he sacrifices himself to create an opening. 361 381 382

Okkotsu later traps her using Shadow Binding after luring her into a false opening. Rika tears off the Fox's arms, forcing her Domain to collapse and compelling her to retreat. 384 385

Full restoration and defeat

After obtaining all nine Sesshōseki, the Fox regains her full power and attempts to secure Okkotsu as a future vessel. She tears out Xia Jie's heart, kills Kokichi Muta, and battles the Jujutsu High forces until Xia Jie counters her with an open Domain, the Nine Noble Children, and stolen Cursed Energy. 393 394 398

Xia Jie seemingly destroys her manifested body and captures the Sesshōseki she leaves behind. However, she escapes with Hollow Wicker Basket at the critical moment and remains alive, though badly injured. 398 399
