Background

Soul Beasts are the creatures from which Soul Masters traditionally obtain Soul Rings. Under the established cultivation system, a Soul Master must hunt and kill a Soul Beast at each bottleneck; reaching nine rings therefore requires the deaths of at least nine Soul Beasts. This has created a long-standing relationship of hunting, retaliation, and concealment between humans and Soul Beasts. 29

The Great Star Dou Forest was one of the continent's three major Soul Beast habitats, alongside Sunset Forest and the Far North. Sunset Forest was later reduced to a poisonous wasteland after Tang San destroyed its Soul Beast population to isolate the Icefire Yin Yang Well; Yan Jingzhe finds the corroded remains of numerous Soul Beasts there, including a Ten-Thousand-Year Soul Beast's leg bone. 2 9

Soul Beasts vary drastically in intelligence, form, age, and strength. Powerful individuals may command entire regions or clans, take human form, and possess influence comparable to the continent's strongest Soul Masters. The Great Star Dou Forest is governed by Beast God Di Tian under the ultimate authority of the dormant Silver Dragon King Gu Yuena, while the Far North was ruled by the Snow Empress. 27 58 152

Great Star Dou Forest

The Great Star Dou Forest's Core Area is home to the Soul Beast Clan's highest-ranking ferocious beasts. Di Tian, the Beast God, commands the forest's myriad Soul Beasts and acts as its principal negotiator with humans. 27 53

Soul Spirit Contracts

The Soul Spirit Method replaces the permanent death of a hunted Soul Beast with a voluntary contract between Soul Beast and Soul Master. A contracted Soul Beast becomes a spiritual entity residing within the Soul Master's body while retaining its consciousness. 29 111

Contract Principles

• Soul Masters receive the corresponding Soul Ring upon forming a contract, without killing the Soul Beast. 111
• Soul Spirits retain their consciousness, can communicate with their contractors, and may continue cultivating. 29 111
• As a Soul Spirit's cultivation rises, it can unlock higher-level Soul Rings for its contractor rather than providing only a single fixed benefit. 29 111

Development and Demonstration

Yan Jingzhe initially captures hundred-year and thousand-year Soul Beasts for Electrolux's research into the improved method, later releasing the studied creatures into Shrek's beast arena for student training. 30

The successful transformation of the Snow Empress demonstrates that a powerful Soul Beast can become a Soul Spirit while preserving its awareness and will. This convinces Di Tian and other Great Star Dou Forest leaders that the method may provide a solution to the Soul Beast Clan's extinction crisis. 54
