Background / History

Zhang Yanqiu meets Lin Yuzhu, Li Xiangwan, and Li Xiangbei while travelling to the countryside as an Educated Youth. She introduces herself warmly on the train, but soon develops feelings for Li Xiangbei, whose appearance and family background make her feel both attracted and inadequate. Li Xiangwan notices her interest and begins keeping her distance. 5 6

During the journey, Zhang is burdened by heavy luggage and accepts Lin Yuzhu's help carrying a bag. At the Educated Youth Dormitory, she chooses the brighter window-side section of the kang despite the others' unspoken safety concerns. Though reluctant, she contributes fifty cents toward the cloth partitions that give the women privacy. 7 9

Rural life proves difficult for Zhang. She is disgusted enough by the village toilet to vomit, struggles with farm work, cannot tolerate Wang Xiaomei's heavily spiced cooking, and lacks the funds to establish a separate kitchen.
