Wang Xiaomei had already spent two years in the Northeast by the time Lin Yuzhu arrived. Her Mandarin carries both a Northeastern flavor and her hometown accent. As one of the older residents of the Educated Youth Dormitory, she initially feels superior to the newcomers. 9

She is twenty years old and had learned to support herself early. Unlike Zhao Xianglan, who sends money home, Xiaomei keeps the cash she earns from the production team; her frugality leaves her with enough savings to build her own house. 22 24

Before the main events, Xiaomei had an ambiguous relationship with a village young man who later married a town girl. She worked excessively hard in hopes of pleasing his mother, only to realize that the woman had likely known of the relationship and deliberately exploited her labor. Dormitory Conflicts

As an older Educated Youth, Xiaomei objects to the newcomers’ use of cloth curtains for privacy and attempts to claim some of the remaining material. Her blunt dismissal of modesty and accusations of “capitalist ways” establish her as a source of conflict in the dormitory. 9

Her disputes intensify around communal meals. She avoids cooking work, argues with Zhao Xianglan, adds a basinful of chili peppers to a shared dish, and claims control over the communal vegetables because she planted them. Lin Yuzhu, Li Xiangwan, and Li Xiangbei ultimately choose to eat separately. 14 15

Conflict with Zhang Yanqiu

Xiaomei repeatedly clashes with Zhang Yanqiu, accusing her of freeloading, refusing to wash dishes, criticizing food while contributing little, and relying on others for grain. During their confrontation, she demands that Zhang find another place to eat. 21

The dispute culminates in Zhang’s suicide attempt by jumping into the river. The village chief reprimands Xiaomei, villagers condemn her as a bully, and she becomes frightened enough to seek comfort from Lin Yuzhu. 22

Independence and New Home

Humiliated by village gossip and anticipating another influx of Educated Youth, Xiaomei decides to separate from the communal household. She spends her savings to build her own room, seeking control over her food, space, and reputation. 23 24

Her new residence makes her Lin Yuzhu’s neighbor and strengthens their partnership. The two later cook together, travel to town together, and cooperate in repairing their relationship with the village chief. 24 27 31 33

Friendship with Lin Yuzhu

Although Lin Yuzhu initially sees Xiaomei as troublesome and unreliable, she gradually recognizes that Xiaomei is dependable when actual help is needed and that Zhao Xianglan may have amplified her faults. 19

Xiaomei comes to treat Lin Yuzhu’s honesty as proof of friendship. Even after Lin bluntly tells her that she had not been kind when they first met, Xiaomei concludes that Lin respects her enough not to deceive her. 37

When Xiaomei falls seriously ill with a fever, Lin takes her to the town hospital, keeps her warm, obtains medicine, and cares for her through the night. Xiaomei responds with unusual emotional openness and affection. 43 44 45
