Background / History

Hongyun possessed a strand of Primordial Purple Qi granted by Dao Ancestor Hongjun. Although he had attained the First Corpse Severing of the Quasi-Sage realm, he had not become a Sage; the Purple Qi consequently made him a target for those seeking the foundation of sainthood 18 21.

Houtu learned that Dijun, Donghuang Taiyi, and Kunpeng intended to seize Hongyun's Primordial Purple Qi. Unable to leave her tribe without risking war with the Demon Court, she asked Jing Chu to warn Zhen Yuanzi at Five Villages Temple 18. Zhen Yuanzi immediately set out to protect his close friend upon receiving the warning 20.

The Demon Court nevertheless besieged Hongyun. Zhen Yuanzi was restrained by Donghuang Taiyi's Chaos Bell, while Hongyun faced Dijun and Kunpeng. Hongyun trapped Kunpeng with the Soul-Scattering Sand from his Nine-Nine Red Cloud Soul-Dispelling Gourd, but Dijun used the River Chart and Luo Script to lock space and time before burning Hongyun with Solar True Fire 21.

Realizing he could neither preserve the Primordial Purple Qi nor protect Zhen Yuanzi from being drawn further into the battle, Hongyun hurled the Purple Qi into a spatial rift. Dijun then struck him down in fury 22. Before his fall, however, Hongyun concealed a wisp of his Primordial Spirit inside his damaged gourd. Jing Chu recovered the gourd and discovered him, later reuniting him with Zhen Yuanzi 22 23.

Personality

Hongyun is described as gentle and generous, but he does not yield when facing an attempt to forcibly take the Primordial Purple Qi entrusted to him 21. Even after losing his body and cultivation, he remains calm rather than resentful, accepts the difficulty of recovery, and regrets having endangered Zhen Yuanzi 22 23.

He values friendship deeply. His choice to cast away the Primordial Purple Qi is motivated in part by his refusal to let Zhen Yuanzi continue suffering for his karma 22. He also judges Jing Chu favorably after Jing Chu shows no greed toward the Nine-Nine Red Cloud Soul-Dispelling Gourd or his weakened Primordial Spirit 23.

Hongyun is the central target of the Demon Court's operation to obtain Primordial Purple Qi. Despite Houtu's warning reaching Zhen Yuanzi in time, Hongyun is overwhelmed by the combined threat of Dijun, Donghuang Taiyi, and Kunpeng 18 20 21.

Fall and Survival

Hongyun prevents the Demon Court from obtaining the Primordial Purple Qi by sending it into an unknown spatial rift, but Dijun kills his Dao body in retaliation 22. His hidden wisp of Primordial Spirit survives within the Nine-Nine Red Cloud Soul-Dispelling Gourd and is recovered by Jing Chu 22.

Recuperation at Five Villages Temple

After Zhen Yuanzi finds him alive, Hongyun acknowledges that recovery will be extremely difficult. Zhen Yuanzi nevertheless takes him back to Five Villages Temple, intending for his Primordial Spirit to recuperate through the Ginseng Fruit Tree 23.
