Origin and History

Three hundred years before the story, the descent of the Red Calamity Star infected and mutated countless lifeforms on Blue Star. The resulting Mutated Beasts forced humanity into fortified base cities, while most wilderness regions became beast territory. Human martial cultivation emerged as a means of resisting them 3.

The apparent balance between humanity and the Mutated Beasts is later exposed as incomplete. Ye Lingyun confirms that humanity has been raised like livestock by a force from the Star Sea, that the Great Cataclysm was not accidental, and that the Mutated Beasts have concealed much of their actual strength 160 161.

The species maintains a vast hierarchy extending far beyond the threats ordinarily seen at base-city walls. The Ten Thousand Beasts Mountain Range contains the Beast Emperor Hall, a command center with thrones for major Beast Emperors, while more than a hundred Beast Kings above the Eighth Tier are said to exist across the race 173 160.

Classification and Hierarchy

Rank Designation / Position Documented traits and examples
First Tier Low-tier beasts Includes Mutated Boars, Shadow Cats, Ironhide Rhinos, Thorn Snakes, and other frontline creatures. They commonly attack in large hordes and can be directed by stronger beasts 3 10 11.
Second Tier Mid-tier beasts Includes Rockshell Beasts, Swiftshadow Leopards, Ironback Dire Wolves, and Venom Spiders. They demonstrate enough intelligence to identify and jointly target dangerous human combatants 10 11.
Third Tier Beast-tide commanders The Blood Wolf King commanded a beast tide and drove subordinate beasts into a frenzied assault through its howl 10.
Fourth Tier High-tier beasts Possess greater intelligence, coordinated combat ability, and stronger innate talents than lower-ranked beasts 65.
Fifth Tier High-tier beasts Can speak simple human language; examples include Roc-type beasts and the creatures imprisoned on Peak Tower’s 50th floor 74 75.
Sixth Tier Beast Lords / Kings Includes the Earth Dragon Lizard King, Ironfeather Thunderhawk, Gold-Eating Rat Queen, and Ironclad Earth Dragon King. Some command large beast tides or wield innate domains 93 117 151.
Seventh Tier Beast Lords Powerful territorial rulers such as Blood Claw Lord; the rank is also the minimum target range of Lin Ming’s later hunts in the Ten Thousand Beasts Mountain Range 175 185.
Eighth Tier Beast Kings High-ranking rulers capable of assuming human form. Known examples include Xiong Lie, Hu Lie, the Golden Lion King, Demon Python King, Shadow Leopard King, Golden Eagle King, Iron Armor King, and Poison Spider King 143 183 184.
Ninth Tier Beast Emperors Apocalyptic beings capable of threatening or destroying base cities. Their deaths produce a blood-rain heavenly phenomenon 82 198.
Tenth Tier True Beast Emperor The Black Dragon Emperor is a Tenth-Tier Peak existence and commands the Mutated Beast clans after its awakening 217 222.
Eleventh Tier Potential future threat The Mutated Beast Emperor is believed capable of breaking through to the Eleventh Tier, which would present an existential danger to humanity 217.

Traits and Behavior

  • Mutated Beasts take highly varied forms, including boars, wolves, cats, rhinos, snakes, spiders, rats, bats, crocodiles, mantises, birds, flood dragons, and dragons 3 10 85 92.
  • Their bodies often possess extreme physical defenses, regenerative ability, venom, flight, speed, claws, scales, horns, or specialized innate abilities 10 65 88.
  • Higher-ranked beasts display increasing intelligence, tactical coordination, speech, territorial rule, and political organization 11 65 74 173.
  • Eighth-Tier Beast Kings can transform into human forms, though their aura and mannerisms distinguish them from ordinary humans 143.
  • Many lower-tier beasts depend on stronger leaders for cohesion. When the Blood Wolf Commander and Earth Dragon Lizard King are killed, their respective hordes fall into panic and retreat 14 96.
  • Some clans exhibit intense loyalty toward their emperors. During the awakening ritual of the True Beast Emperor, Seventh- and Eighth-Tier commanders willingly offer their lives and blood as sacrifices 200.

Territories and Organization

Beast Tides

Mutated Beasts repeatedly launch mass assaults on human base cities. Their hordes use low-tier beasts to exhaust defenders, while stronger creatures wait behind the tide to exploit breaches or kill key martial artists 92.

Major attacks can be coordinated on a national scale. More than twenty Dragon Nation base cities were assaulted simultaneously, including several S-rank beast hordes led by Seventh-Tier Mutated Beasts; Northern Frontier Base City faced an SSS-rank horde led by a Ninth-Tier Beast Emperor 82.

Ten Thousand Beasts Mountain Range

The Ten Thousand Beasts Mountain Range is a forbidden zone densely populated by powerful Mutated Beasts, including Eighth-Tier Beast Kings and Ninth-Tier Beast Emperors 172. It contains the Beast Emperor Hall, where Beast Emperors gather and direct the race’s broader actions 173 174.

After Lin Ming begins hunting its high-tier inhabitants, the mountain range’s clans fall into widespread fear. Beast Kings, Beast Generals, and lower-ranked beasts stop traveling alone or hide within their nests to avoid being targeted 185.

Human Captivity

Mutated Beasts treat humans as “blood food” and maintain captive settlements in their territories. Within Blood Claw Lord’s domain alone, nearly ten thousand humans are raised as livestock across multiple settlements 175.

Human prisoners are subjected to slavery, forced labor, and predation. Wolf Fang’s entourage uses tethered humans as attendants, while refugees are targeted for consumption, including unborn children 176 177.

Relationship with Humanity

  • Humanity — The Mutated Beasts are humanity’s principal enemy. Their control of the wilderness isolates human base cities and makes travel between them exceptionally dangerous 3 85.
  • Peak Martial Arts Hall — A major opposing force. Its hall master captured and imprisoned numerous Mutated Beasts in Peak Tower as opponents for martial-artist trials 60.
  • Beast God Cult — A human collaborator organization that embraces the doctrine that humans are livestock and slaves of the Beast God Kindred. Its members work with Mutated Beasts, infiltrate human institutions, and create beastified humans through Beast God’s Seeds 128 129 138 169.
  • Lin Ming — A major threat to the race. His killings repeatedly collapse beast tides, devastate Beast King territories, and lead to the deaths of multiple Ninth-Tier Beast Emperors 96 184 198 200.
  • Ye Lingyun — A human Tenth-Tier cultivator whose intervention has slain a Ninth-Tier Beast Emperor and forced the Mutated Beast clans to temporarily withdraw 82 209 217.

Story Role and Major Arcs

Early Beast Tides

Mutated Boars form Lin Ming’s first direct encounter with the species at the Vanguard Reserve Camp. He learns to target their vulnerable areas—eyes, mouth, belly, and joints—and begins accumulating Kill Points through slaughter 3.

The subsequent beast tide escalates from First-Tier creatures to Tier Two beasts and the Third-Tier Blood Wolf Commander. Its death breaks the horde’s cohesion and causes a large-scale retreat 10 11 14.

Peak Tower Trials

Peak Martial Arts Hall confines beasts of varying strength in Peak Tower, from First Realm creatures to opponents dangerous even to Sixth- and Seventh-Tier Grandmasters. Official disciples fight them for practical-combat training and Peak Point rewards 60.

Lin Ming clears the tower’s Third- and Fourth-Tier floors, eventually annihilating ten Fifth-Tier First-Level beasts with a single spear strike on Floor 50. He later reaches Floor 59 and defeats ten peak Fifth-Tier Ninth-Level Mutated Beasts while at Tier Four, Seventh Level 64 75 79.

South River Base City Defense

Mutated Beast hordes breach South River’s East City Wall, where Fifth-Tier beasts, two Sixth-Tier Lords, and airborne beasts join the assault 85 92 93. Lin Ming kills the Sixth-Tier Second-Layer Earth Dragon Lizard King in one strike, causing the remaining horde to lose morale and flee 96.

The Gold-Eating Rat Queen later leads another assault. It uses the Gold-Eating Domain, Devouring Clones, and the absorbed life force of slain human experts to break through from the Sixth Tier to the Seventh Tier 117 119.

East Forest and the Beast Kings

Three Eighth-Tier Beast Kings—Xiong Lie, Hu Lie, and the Golden Lion King—lead a horde through East Forest Base City after the Beast God Cult’s betrayal. They intend to consume the city’s inhabitants as blood food 142 143.

Ye Lingyun’s arrival shatters the assault, forcing the surviving beasts to flee before he destroys them with lightning spears 144.

Ten Thousand Beasts Mountain Range Hunt

Gu Xinghai transports Lin Ming into the Ten Thousand Beasts Mountain Range in the hope that its Beast Kings and Beast Emperors will kill him 172. Instead, Lin Ming turns the region into a source of Kill Points, freeing human captives and killing territorial rulers such as Blood Claw Lord, Wolf Fang, and five Eighth-Tier Beast Kings 175 177 184.

With Xiao Hei’s spatial ability, Lin Ming conducts rapid hunts against Seventh-Tier-and-above targets. The Mutated Beast clans become the prey, enduring sustained panic as their Beast Kings and Lords are killed across the mountain range 185 190.

Beast Emperor Conflict

Lin Ming kills multiple Ninth-Tier Beast Emperors, including the Golden Feather Emperor. Their deaths cause blood rain and spread fear throughout the Ten Thousand Beasts Mountain Range 198 200.

In response, the remaining Beast Emperors awaken their True Beast Emperor through a mass blood sacrifice. The awakened Black Dragon Emperor later orders all clans to withdraw and avoid provoking humanity while it recovers from its injuries 200 209.

Trivia

  • The original term for Mutated Beasts is 异化兽.
  • Peak Tower’s challenge floors use imprisoned Mutated Beasts as the primary opponents for official disciples of Peak Martial Arts Hall 60.
  • The earliest Mutated Beast Emperors are said not to have evolved from native Blue Star life, but to have originated beyond the heavens; their descendants inherited portions of those bloodlines 122.
