Background
Snorlax evolved from Munchlax after Sui Yan's teasing struck a nerve. Lu Ze immediately celebrated the evolution by embracing his exceptionally springy belly, only for Snorlax to catch him before he was flung away. 120
While still only four months old, Snorlax accompanied Bewear on an outing to a cake shop and a fighting arena. Bewear arranged for Machoke to serve as his first instructor; Snorlax's opening punch sent Machoke flying, revealing the abnormal strength he possessed even at that age. 163
Lu Ze developed Snorlax through heavy nutrition, Energy Cubes, and a demanding physical-training routine. Though he appears lazy, Snorlax reliably completes his daily quota and often trains further afterward, gradually surpassing the Patterned Snorlax in raw strength. 481 673 851
At a hot spring, Snorlax found a Pokémon Egg drifting along the waterway. Fearing that Lu Ze might give it away, he secretly searched upstream for its parents, protected the Egg in a souvenir box, told it stories, and eventually kept it after failing to find its family. The Egg hatched into a female Cottonee, whom Snorlax treats protectively. 726 727 752 770
Appearance
Lu Ze's Snorlax is an unusually large, well-kept specimen with a soft, resilient belly and smooth, glossy fur. While ordinary Snorlax stand roughly 2.3–2.8 meters tall, he exceeds three meters in height. 120 801 939
- Over three meters tall; described as a behemoth and noticeably larger than ordinary Snorlax. 683 992
- Possesses a bouncy belly soft enough for Lu Ze and numerous younger Pokémon to sleep on. 120 801 864
- Has an outer fat layer, inner muscle, and Thick Fat Ability, giving him exceptional physical durability. 713
- Usually wears a gentle, narrowed-eye smile, though it disappears when he becomes serious in battle. 397 1178
- Required custom-made Hanfu due to his size; his outfit was styled as a warrior's attire with a ceremonial sword. 1187
Personality
Snorlax is food-motivated, relaxed, and fond of sleeping, but he is not genuinely indolent. He finishes his own training efficiently, recognizes his shortcomings, and willingly works to improve his ranged attacks and attack frequency so that he can protect his teammates without relying on them to cover his slow speed. 481 655 673
He is gentle with smaller Pokémon and children. He gave his own grilled squid skewers to Chenchen at a temple fair, shared food with the Patterned Pokémon, and became deeply attached to the abandoned Egg that later hatched into Cottonee. 526 539 726 770
In battle, Snorlax loves direct contests of strength. He enjoys wrestling Slaking and fighting Patterned Snorlax because both can withstand his power, but he is also a capable tactician who uses moves such as Encore, Belly Drum, Rest, and Yawn to reverse disadvantageous situations. 526 851 1173 1261
Abilities & Skills
Thick Fat
Snorlax's Thick Fat Ability halves incoming Fire- and Ice-type damage, reinforcing an already formidable defensive body. 120
- Withstood Skuntank's Flamethrower with little effect during his sweep of an Island Nation contestant's team. 713 715
- Reduced the threat posed by Charizard's Fire-type offense during their Master-level spar. 1173
- Combines with his fat-and-muscle physique to make weaker attacks ineffective. 713
Overwhelming Physical Strength
Snorlax specializes in close-range power, using brute force to pin, throw, or overwhelm opponents that cannot maintain distance.
- Sent Machoke flying with a single punch during his first formal training session. 163
- Defeated Machamp with Earthquake, Focus Blast, and Superpower after enduring Seismic Toss and paralysis. 397
- One-shot Scizor with Fire Punch and defeated Greninja with Heat Crash. 713
- Stopped the Giant Rock's advance alone with High Horsepower, prompting his Master-level breakthrough. 1178
- Pinned Mega Swampert to the ground and finished it with repeated Seed Bombs. 1235
- Overpowered Mega Aggron with Blast Burn and High Horsepower. 1284
- Defeated Raikou with two High Horsepower strikes. 1361
Defensive Endurance and Recovery
Snorlax can absorb damage long enough to create a decisive counterattack.
- Used Bulk Up's Defense boosts to survive Arcanine's Double Kick long enough to land High Horsepower. 151
- Uses Rest and Sleep Talk to recover while retaining the chance to attack; Sleep Talk once called Heavy Charge and interrupted Crawdaunt's Swords Dance. 243
- Uses Amnesia against special attackers and Stockpile plus Swallow to restore stamina during attrition battles. 1022 1023 1261
- Can use Belly Drum to maximize Attack, then restore himself through Rest and allied support. 1178
Tactical Control
Despite his straightforward fighting style, Snorlax has a versatile disruptive move set.
- Encore — forces opponents to repeat a move; used to trap Charizard into a sequence that enabled Belly Drum and later defeat him with Thunder Punch. 1173
- Yawn — pressures opponents into sleep or forces switches; used against Mega Medicham and Dragonite. 888 1261
- Block — prevents an opponent from switching out, as demonstrated by Wang Siyuan's Snorlax against Crawdaunt. 243
- Work Up — raises both offensive stats and enabled a team sweep while Skuntank lacked an answer. 715
- Trick Room synergy — his low speed becomes an advantage when Whimsicott or another ally establishes Trick Room. 387 888 1314
Ranged Move Training
Snorlax's mobility is limited by his short legs, so Lu Ze trained him to threaten opponents at range and prevent them from freely kiting him. 655
- Learned techniques including Flamethrower, Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, Hydro Pump, Surf, Blizzard, Thunder, Shadow Ball, and Psychic; his focus is improving proficiency rather than simply acquiring moves. 655
- Used Thunder against Wallace's Milotic, though his lower Special Attack limited its damage. 1022
- Can combine fast reactions with elemental punches; his Fire Punch, Ice Punch, and Thunder Punch are among his most practiced attacks. 713 715 1121
Crush Grip
Regigigas recognized Snorlax's strength and chose to teach him the Legendary Pokémon's signature move, Crush Grip. 1278
- Defeated Park Dosi's Mega Heracross with the previously unknown technique. 1343
- Under Trick Room, used Crush Grip to defeat Chu Wanquan's Pangoro before continuing through Indeedee and Escavalier. 1393
Equipment / Items
- Leftovers — held during the battle against Registeel. 772
- Exquisite Strength Energy Cubes — regular nutritional reward that slightly improves strength when paired with training. 397
- Space Backpack — custom-ordered as a New Year's gift. 557
- Custom warrior Hanfu — tailored to fit his over-three-meter frame. 1187
Relationships
- Lu Ze — Trainer and caretaker. Lu Ze supports Snorlax's specialized training, trusts his battlefield judgment, and respected his wish to keep the Pokémon Egg secret until he was ready to reveal it. 481 655 752
- Bewear — Early mentor and close companion. Bewear introduced Snorlax to cake shops and fighting training, and remains one of the few Pokémon he considers a worthwhile strength-training opponent. 163 851
- Cottonee — Adopted hatchling. Snorlax secretly protected her Egg, searched for her parents, and later guarded her carefully after she hatched. 726 770
- Charizard — Younger-brother figure and teammate. Charizard kept Snorlax's Egg secret from Lu Ze; their later battle ended with Snorlax defeating the Master-level Charizard, then showing concern for him afterward. 727 1173
- Whimsicott — Key tactical partner. Whimsicott's Trick Room removes Snorlax's speed disadvantage and lets him dominate slower-paced battles. 770 888 1314
- Patterned Snorlax — Copy created by Mewtwo's Pokémon Copying Machine and regarded as Snorlax's brother. The two enjoy testing their strength and fighting each other. 851 859
- Slaking — One of Snorlax's favorite opponents for direct power contests, especially when Slaking enters its berserk state. 526 851
- Regigigas — Legendary mentor who tested Snorlax's limits, acknowledged his strength, and taught him Crush Grip. 1278
