Background
Beedrill began as Xia Yan’s Weedle. During its early growth, it accumulated power through the Bug Essence Fruit, Poison-type enhancement, the Pure Gold Feather, and Zapdos’s Bolt Strike. Its Kakuna stage further refined those reserves until it could break free of an unusually difficult cocoon and evolve. 81 83
Its evolution immediately made it an exceptional individual among its species: it entered the Veteran Level, surpassed ordinary Beedrill in physical ability, and gained an unusual capacity to generate Electric-type energy despite remaining Bug/Poison-type. 83
After evolving, Beedrill challenged Fu Ji’s Beedrill at the Silph Pokémon Battle Club. Though newly evolved, it was calm enough to make its more experienced opponent visibly uneasy. 80 81
Appearance
Beedrill is larger than it was as a Weedle or Kakuna, with scarlet compound eyes, long twin stingers, and yellow wing patterns that glow when it releases electricity. 83 150
- Its wings were initially marked with fine yellow patterns and surrounded by golden electrical arcs during combat. 83
- Following Zapdos’s intervention, its formerly transparent wings became fully golden, while its body grew by nearly half without losing speed. 822
- In Mega Evolution, its body becomes more streamlined, its abdomen slimmer, and its twin stingers resemble metallic lances. 1063
- During Dynamax Mega Evolution, its thin wing membranes appear to be formed from lightning. 1063
Personality
Beedrill is composed and intimidating in battle. Even shortly after evolving, it faced other Beedrill silently and calmly, rubbing its stingers together rather than displaying agitation. 81
It is exceptionally diligent. It continued training even during rest periods, strictly completed Xia Yan’s assignments, and spent long periods refining moves such as Swords Dance, Agility, Drill Run, and Knock Off. 223 281 414
Beedrill is proud, resilient, and highly protective of Xia Yan. It stepped between Xia Yan and an Elite-level Druddigon despite the massive disparity in strength, and later rose again after being heavily injured by Darmanitan rather than accept defeat. 208 437
Despite its seriousness, Beedrill can become shy and embarrassed in personal matters. It was flustered by Shiny Vespiquen’s advances, though it still insisted that she defeat it before it would acknowledge her. 291
Abilities & Skills
Sniper
Beedrill’s standard Ability is Sniper, which rewards its precision-based fighting style and focus on enemy weak points. Its attacks become especially dangerous when it identifies vulnerable areas. 83 101
- Struck Machoke beneath the arm with Acrobatics, triggering Sniper and doubling the move’s power. 101
- Uses speed, observation, and unusual attack angles to target weaknesses rather than rely on direct exchanges. 83 116
- Combined Sniper, boosted Attack, and Fell Stinger to overwhelm multiple opponents in succession at the Celadon City Club. 102 103
- Studied Single Strike Style techniques to improve its ability to strike vital points, drawing inspiration from Wicked Blow. 1048
Lightning Speed and Electric-Type Energy
Beedrill can store and generate electricity through wings altered by the Pure Gold Feather. The electricity does not give it an Electric typing, but primarily enhances its speed. 83 826 1025
- Initially used Electroweb as an intermediary to channel electricity onto Twineedle, creating its “golden twin spears.” 84
- Can use Electroweb to restrain opponents or, in unusual circumstances, apply it to itself. 300 730
- Developed Agility after observing Jirachi, allowing it to exceed its previous speed limits. 253
- Entered an Extreme Speed State against the Boss Alolan Sandslash, then Mega Evolved to maintain its advantage when Sandslash used Hail to increase its speed. 611
- Uses electrical currents and magnetic fields in combat; Regieleki’s unstable electricity became the basis for Xia Yan’s planned further upgrade to Beedrill’s wings. 995 1025
Assassin-Style Combat
Beedrill’s combat role is that of a fast physical assassin: it uses speed to create openings, attacks weak points, and withdraws before opponents can retaliate. Its main limitation is relatively low durability against opponents that can survive or anticipate its attacks. 116
- Uses Double Team to misdirect opponents and create safe attack angles. 116 333
- Combines Double Team with Fell Stinger as a “shadow assassin” tactic, concealing its real attack among afterimages. 116
- Uses Tailwind and Agility together to push its movement speed beyond visual tracking. 749
- Can execute Counter Shield techniques, including incorporating them into Drill Run to increase its penetration. 102 889
- Learns opponents’ weaknesses through repeated sparring, including training against Ditto’s transformed forms. 84 391
Attack Enhancement
Beedrill has extensive self-buffing tools, allowing it to turn a successful opening into overwhelming offensive pressure.
- Fell Stinger — Raises its Attack sharply after defeating an opponent; repeated knockouts allowed it to stack its power through a multi-opponent battle. 101 103
- Swords Dance — Nearly doubles its Attack without requiring a knockout. It mastered the move after prolonged practice and observation of Farfetch’d and later refined it to a level comparable to Doublade’s. 159 414
- Triple Combo — A pre-Swords Dance boost sequence combining Tailwind, Focus Energy, and Sharpen. 143
- Can perform Swords Dance while maneuvering and evading, allowing it to preserve battle tempo against ranged attacks. 458 815
Move Coverage
Xia Yan deliberately expanded Beedrill’s movepool to compensate for its weaknesses to Flying-, Rock-, Fire-, and Psychic-type opponents. 105
- X-Scissor — Learned from a Scyther leader after defeating it and receiving its instruction in exchange for an Antidote. 92
- Drill Run — Ground-type coverage with an elevated critical-hit chance; used to exploit Fire- and Rock-type weaknesses, including against Lampent and Tyrantrum. 105 150 333
- Knock Off — Dark-type coverage that can restrict an opponent’s held item and helps answer Psychic-types. 105
- Acrobatics — A precision attack that benefits strongly from Sniper when aimed at weak points. 90 101
- Fury Cutter — Used to defeat Kukui’s Kommo-o after Beedrill improved its control over Bug-type energy during the battle. 749
- Poison Jab — Used after its Poison-type development began catching up with its Bug-type offense. 749 1104
Poison-Type Development
For much of its career, Beedrill’s Bug-type offense outpaced its Poison-type power. Xia Yan later addressed this imbalance through dedicated development. 623
- Consumed poison sacs from numerous Sub-Elite Four Poison-type Pokémon, making its poison exceptionally potent. 749
- Absorbed power from the Toxic Plate, causing its Poison-type energy to become comparable to its Bug-type energy. 1104
- Can combine poison with its fast hit-and-run style, poisoning stronger opponents before withdrawing. 749
Mega Evolution
When Xia Yan and Beedrill’s hearts synchronize, it can Mega Evolve into Mega Beedrill. The first transformation caused major strain on Xia Yan, making it unsuitable for casual use at the time. 301 302
- Base Attack rises from 90 to 150, while base Speed rises from 75 to 145. 302
- Its Ability changes to Adaptability, significantly amplifying the power of Bug- and Poison-type attacks. 302
- Mega Beedrill defeated a Gym Leader-level Slowking with X-Scissor shortly after first Mega Evolving. 301 302
- Its power rises further as Xia Yan and Beedrill’s Affection deepens during Mega Evolution. 437
- It can receive external Ability support, such as Alakazam transferring Unburden to double its speed after removing Silver Powder. 914
Boss Aura and King’s Aura
Beedrill can absorb power from defeated Boss Pokémon, subtly altering its wing patterns and raising its potential. 211 292
- Absorbed aura from a Lord Mightyena, causing its golden wing patterns to brighten. 211
- Absorbed Shiny Vespiquen’s Boss Aura after defeating her, increasing its potential growth limit. 292
- Its Boss Aura can intimidate and command reverence from Pokémon such as Charjabug. 606
- Later wielded King’s Aura, allowing it to resist Zapdos’s Intimidate and exert pressure in return. 898
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Silver Powder — Carried to strengthen Beedrill’s Bug-type energy and attacks. 98 270
- Pure Gold Feather — A major source of its unusual electrical traits and transformed wings. 81 1025
- Mega Evolution Stone — Used with Xia Yan’s synchronization to trigger Mega Evolution; Beedrill returned it to Xia Yan afterward to preserve secrecy. 301 302
- Insect Plate — Received after defeating Kleavor and being recognized as king of the Obsidian Fieldlands. 850
- Seed of Mastery — Received alongside the Insect Plate after its victory over Kleavor. 850
- Toxic Plate — Its absorbed power eventually brought Beedrill’s Poison-type energy close to its Bug-type energy. 1104
Relationships
- Xia Yan — Trainer and closest partner. Their mutual understanding is exceptionally high, with an estimated Affection range of 230–240; their complete synchronization enables Mega Evolution. 207 301
- Pidgeotto — Early sparring partner whose Keen Eye was used as a model for Beedrill’s weakness-identification training. 84
- Ditto — Training partner that transformed into different Pokémon so Beedrill could study varied opponents and their weaknesses. 84 391
- Togepi / Togetic / Togekiss — Frequent support partner; protected Beedrill from burns and Will-O-Wisp with Heal Bell and Safeguard, and later helped it in coordinated battles. 150 217
- Abra / Kadabra / Alakazam — Tactical partner that has repeatedly used Psychic power to protect, reposition, and support Beedrill. 208 243 868
- Vespiquen — Shiny Vespiquen expressed romantic interest in Beedrill; Beedrill defeated her in battle and absorbed her Boss Aura after her surrender. 291 292
- Giovanni’s Beedrill — A powerful counterpart and potential benchmark. Xia Yan believes fighting it may help Beedrill cross into Legendary Level. 1122
Story Role / Major Arcs
- Silph Pokémon Battle Club — Evolved from Weedle and returned to challenge Fu Ji’s Beedrill under a Beedrill-only rule. 80 81

- Giovanni’s ace Beedrill — Faced Giovanni’s Legendary-level Beedrill as a potential opportunity to overcome its own current limit. 1122
Trivia
- Beedrill does not like staying inside a Poké Ball and eagerly approaches Xia Yan when released. 83
- Ditto can copy Beedrill’s appearance but could not reproduce its electrical arcs. 83
- Beedrill’s nickname, “Zilong,” was given by Xia Yan after its victory over Vespiquen. 292
- Its greatest persistent weakness is stamina: even when its offense is heavily boosted, extended consecutive battles can exhaust it. 102 730
