| Dou Zhe | 1 | At age ten, Xiao Yan condensed a Dou Qi Vortex and entered the Dou Zhe realm. 1 |
| Third Duan Dou Qi | 1 | His vortex later vanished, causing his Dou Qi to leak away over three years. 1 |
| Fifth Duan Dou Qi | 7 | Foundation-Building Elixir cultivation and brutal body tempering enabled a rapid recovery to the fifth stage. 7 |
| Ninth Duan Dou Qi | 25 | Xiao Yan advanced from Third to Ninth Duan within one year with Medicine Elder's training and the Foundation-Building Elixir. 25 |
| Dou Zhe | 27 | Gathering Qi Powder gathered heaven-and-earth energy; Xiao Yan compressed his body and Dou Qi before condensing a smaller, denser vortex. 27 |
| Six-Star Dou Zhe | 65 | Xiao Yan broke through while successfully refining a Longevity-Extending Pill. 65 |
| Seven-Star Dou Zhe | 81 | A new star appeared in Xiao Yan's Qi vortex, significantly increasing both the quantity and quality of his Dou Qi. 81 |
| Eight-Star Dou Zhe | 105 | An energy vortex formed around him as another star condensed in his Qi vortex. 105 |
| Dou Master | 136 | Compressed Dou Qi became crystalline liquid energy; the Heavenly Flame Core absorbed it and produced black-and-white liquid energy. 136 |
| Four-Star Dou Master | 163 | Jia Lie Bi identifies Xiao Yan's true cultivation as four-star Dou Master, despite his close-combat power rivaling stronger opponents. 163 |
| Great Dou Master | 188 | Liquid energy was compressed around the Heavenly Flame Seed into a diamond-shaped Dou Crystal. 188 |
| Dou Ling | 234 | Xiao Yan is identified as a Dou Ling while sparring with the restored Dou Huang Hai Bodong. 234 |
| Dou Zun | 426 | Wind Venerable addresses Xiao Yan as a Dou Zun after witnessing his defense. 426 |
Nature and Cultivation
Dou Qi is refined from the natural energy present in the environment. Practitioners absorb it through the nose and mouth, refine it through their meridians, and store it within the Qi Sea. It strengthens bones, muscles, and meridians during early cultivation. 2
At the Dou Zhe realm, Dou Qi is organized into a Dou Qi Vortex. The vortex is formed through a specific hand seal and serves as the practitioner's central reserve of refined energy. 27 Higher realms alter this internal structure: Dou Master cultivation condenses Dou Qi into liquid crystalline energy, while Great Dou Master cultivation forms a dense, diamond-shaped Dou Crystal. 136 188
Early-stage practitioners generally cannot depend on external cultivation aids because fragile meridians may be damaged. Foundation-Building Elixir is an exception: its medicinal nature is described as gentle enough to accelerate cultivation without causing the usual harm. 19 21
Cultivation Mechanics
Duan Levels
Before becoming a Dou Zhe, cultivation is measured in Duan. Seventh Duan is the Xiao Clan's passing standard for its coming-of-age test. 151
- A cultivator advances by continuously absorbing and refining ambient energy into Dou Qi. 2
- Painful physical tempering can stimulate Dou Qi activity, allowing it to circulate through the body and strengthen muscles and bones. 6
- Foundation-Building Elixir releases vapor and medicinal energy that greatly improves absorption speed while nourishing the body. 5 21
- Gathering Qi Powder acts similarly to a spirit-gathering formation, rapidly drawing in heaven-and-earth energy to assist a Ninth Duan cultivator in forming a vortex. 27
Dou Qi Vortex
A Dou Qi Vortex is the defining feature of a Dou Zhe. It stores and circulates refined Dou Qi within the Qi Sea. 1 27
- Xiao Yan's vortex became half-black and half-white after his breakthrough, with black and white energy clusters revolving around it. 28
- The number of stars within the vortex indicates advancement through the Dou Zhe realm. 81 105
- Xiao Yan deliberately compressed his vortex during his breakthrough, producing a smaller and more potent reserve of Dou Qi. 27
Condensation and Armor
Higher-level practitioners can condense Dou Qi into defensive or offensive constructs. 164
- Dou Qi Veil — A defensive veil used by Dou Masters; Xiao Yan's repairs itself as his Dou Qi circulates automatically. 85 163
- Dou Qi Armor — A sturdier defense associated with Great Dou Masters and above. A Dou Ling's armor is more durable and can rapidly repair itself. 163 164
- Dou Qi Condensation — Dou Lings can condense their Dou Qi into weapons, such as Xiao Zhan's massive saber. 164
- Heavenly Net Wings — The tenth level of the Heavenly Net Formula can manifest wings from Dou Qi, enabling flight. 79
Uses
Dou Techniques
Dou Qi is circulated through prescribed meridian and acupoint routes to activate Dou Techniques. The complexity, rank, and energy cost of a technique vary greatly. 3 14
- Blazing Fire Palm uses a simple circulation route to produce wind pressure from the palm. 3
- Eight Extremes Collapse combines physical strength with Force Qi; its output depends heavily on the user's body. 12
- Cloud-Discharging Palm was created by combining Blazing Fire Palm with Eight Extremes Collapse. 8
- Three Thousand Lightning Movement turns the body into lightning for extreme speed, but can exhaust Xiao Yan's Dou Qi in under ten minutes at full output. 304
- Three Points Return to Origin Qi combines physical Force Qi, Heavenly Flame, soul power, and Dou Qi. It can function offensively or form a barrier that absorbs enemy attacks to strengthen itself. 269 350
Alchemy
Dou Qi supports alchemy by controlling flames and sustaining the refinement process. Heavenly Flames are particularly advantageous because of their power and precision. 38 62
- The Yin-Yang Twin Flame refines Xiao Yan's Dou Qi into an exceptionally pure form. 125
- Yang Fire can improve pill quality and grant healing properties to refined medicines. 46
- Alchemists at the first three grades principally require pill-refining technique, flame control, and sufficient Dou Qi; Qi-Replenishing Pills can compensate for low reserves. 62
Recovery and Consumption
Dou Qi is expended by combat techniques, constructs, movement arts, and prolonged battles. Recovery speed can determine whether a practitioner can sustain their abilities. 190 304
- Xiao Yan's mutated cultivation method operates automatically, continuously refining ambient energy and rapidly restoring his Dou Qi. This is a personal abnormality linked to the Flame Mantra and Yin-Yang Twin Flame rather than a standard property of all practitioners. 29 30
- At higher levels, Xiao Yan's expenditure can exceed his automatic recovery rate, making Qi-Replenishing Pills necessary. 188 190
- In the Sky Burning Qi Refining Tower, Heart Fire compresses and purifies Dou Qi passing through it, greatly accelerating cultivation. 307
Limitations
- Low-level practitioners may damage or destroy their meridians by relying on unsuitable external cultivation medicines. 19
- Techniques with high Dou Qi consumption can leave their user unable to continue fighting or moving at full speed. 304 406
- A powerful physical body can compensate for limited Dou Qi in close combat, but it does not eliminate the need for energy when repeatedly using Heavenly Flames or Dou Techniques. 406
- Fusing Dou Techniques is dangerous: conflicting circulation routes can damage meridians and potentially cripple the user. 7 8
