Background / History

Nan lived alone in a sparse cave-like home after her parents left her. Her possessions included a kerosene lamp, flowers, and folded-paper animal and flower models; origami was already her favorite pastime. 7 8

She met Zhou Yang while he was injured and frightening in appearance, yet introduced herself and tended to him without retreating. The two quickly bonded over food and survival, with Nan accepting his generosity as the first kindness she had received since her parents' departure. 5 7
