Background / History

Akagi leads Shohoku’s basketball club as its uncompromising captain and primary interior player. He has waited three years for Shohoku’s chance at “national dominance,” making the prefectural tournament his final major opportunity with the team. 32 43

When Lin Bei joins the club, Akagi immediately notices his refusal to train and forces him into the first-years’ practice game against upperclassmen. Lin Bei’s impossible shot and subsequent one-on-one performance against Rukawa convince Akagi that the seemingly lazy newcomer is hiding exceptional talent. 1 2

Before the Ryonan practice match, Akagi tests Lin Bei’s defense personally. Though Lin Bei cannot withstand his post-up strength, he steals the ball by exploiting Akagi’s focus on the basket; Akagi then names him a bench player who must enter if the situation becomes unfavorable. 5

During the Ryonan game, Akagi anchors Shohoku’s interior but is injured in a collision with Jun Uozumi and temporarily leaves the court. Before departing, he entrusts Sakuragi with holding the paint, then returns late in the match to restore Shohoku’s defense. Shohoku ultimately defeats Ryonan 90–89. 12 14 17

Akagi later confronts Hisashi Mitsui during the attack on the basketball gym, expressing anger and disappointment at his former teammate’s actions. Mitsui’s eventual decision to return to basketball strengthens Shohoku’s lineup ahead of the Kanagawa qualifiers. 29 30
