Background

Class D is one of Advanced Nurturing High School's four first-year classes. Its students are assigned to the most remote area during the opening ceremony: the back of the gymnasium near the exit, where lighting is dimmest. The class is also dismissed last. 2

According to Orikasa Yuu's prior knowledge, Class D is a collection of students regarded as “defective products,” including problem children and students with personal flaws. Its low standing makes it inconspicuous, which Orikasa considers advantageous for avoiding outside attention. 2

Manabu Horikita visibly favors Class A during his opening address and never looks toward Class D, reinforcing the school's deliberate unequal treatment of the class. 2

Class Dynamics

Class D initially lacks unity. During the opening ceremony, Sudou Ken openly glares at Manabu Horikita, Ike Kanji yawns, and Yamauchi Haruki sleeps standing up; Orikasa characterizes the class as “a pile of loose sand.” 2

Within the classroom, students quickly divide into informal groups: Karuizawa Kei's circle occupies the front-center seats, Ike, Yamauchi, and Sudou form a noisy boys' group, and Hirata Yosuke and Kushida Kikyo attract classmates seeking help or social inclusion. 6

The class's poor social climate is demonstrated by a point-based betting pool ranking the girls' bodies. Hirata shuts the activity down, arguing that Class D needs basic mutual respect if it is to become more than “loose sand.” 7

Class D is relegated to the back of the gymnasium and receives no acknowledgement from student council president Manabu Horikita. It is ordered to leave after all other classes. 2
