Background
Lin Feng, a modern corporate worker, transmigrated into Xuan Chuan's body during the period after Dao Ancestor Hongjun's third Purple Cloud Palace lecture, before the Investiture of the Gods Tribulation formally began. He inherited the identity of Master Tongtian's long-secluded chief eldest disciple, whose original cultivation was Peak Golden Immortal 1.
Retaining knowledge of Jiejiao's eventual destruction, Xuan Chuan recognized that the sect's indiscriminate teaching, unruly disciples, and enormous Karmic Force made it a prime target for the coming tribulation. His accompanying Great Dao variable, The One That Escaped, and the Creation Jade Disc Fragment awakened within his sea of consciousness, giving him a means to obscure heavenly secrets and seek a path of survival 1.
He immediately risked his life to warn Master Tongtian that Jiejiao needed to be disbanded or fundamentally reformed. Although Tongtian struck him down in fury, Xuan Chuan survived by using The One That Escaped to create a minute deviation in the Saint's fatal attack. Tongtian then granted him one hundred years to rectify the sect, lending him the Purple Lightning Hammer and authority to punish corrupt disciples 2 3.
Appearance
Xuan Chuan is a black panther transformed into human form. He is described as having slender but powerful hands and is later commonly seen in violet robes 1 27.
- His original reputation was that of a cold and aloof chief disciple who remained in seclusion for years at a time 1.
- After surviving Tongtian's palm strike, he emerged from Biyou Palace bloodied and pale, yet still stood straight while carrying the Purple Lightning Hammer 3 4.
- After his later cultivation gains, core disciples note a more restrained bearing, a lucid Dao heart, and eyes carrying a faint sharpness capable of “severing ten thousand laws” 43.
Personality
Xuan Chuan is resolute, calculating, and willing to accept personal danger for Jiejiao's survival. He confronted Master Tongtian despite the likelihood of death, then accepted responsibility for reforming a sect whose disciples included powerful and hostile figures 2 3.
His reform philosophy combines severe punishment with practical rewards. He ruthlessly removes traitors and heavy karmic offenders, but also directs disciples toward earning Merit through protecting human tribes, believing that self-purification and collective responsibility are necessary to avert the sect's destruction 14 16.
Though he often uses concealed information and strategic misdirection, his central goal remains protecting Jiejiao and altering the tragedies tied to the Investiture of the Gods. He sees fate as a greater trend that can still be influenced by individual choices, preparation, and “variables” such as himself 36 42.
Abilities & Skills
The One That Escaped
The One That Escaped is a Great Dao variable that allows Xuan Chuan to interfere with predestined outcomes, obscure heavenly secrets, and find a thread of life in seemingly fatal situations 1.
- It caused Master Tongtian's fatal palm strike to deviate just enough for Xuan Chuan to survive 3.
- It conceals his fate and aura, making it difficult even for Saints to fully perceive him 8 10.
- He uses it for divination, tracing karmic threads, sensing danger, and foreseeing events affecting Jiejiao 7 20 47.
- Its deduction is limited; he cannot fully see through Saint-level schemes or the entire course of the world's greater trends 47.
- Its deeper principles let him identify flaws, gaps, and “connection nodes” in enemy techniques and formations 22 25.
Fate-Cutting Sword Intent
Xuan Chuan's Dao of Fate-Cutting does not rely on overpowering opponents. Instead, it severs the critical links, circulation nodes, or fated connections that allow an ability to function 22 25.
- He severed the connection between Ji Meng's three saber auras, breaking the Demon Saint's combined divine ability 22.
- He disrupted the circulation of Duobao Daoist's Myriad Treasures Torrent by striking its pivotal nodes 25.
- He can interfere with the control of spiritual treasures, including Taiyi's Nine-Dragon Divine Fire Hood and Wenshu's Dragon-Binding Pillar 39 50.
- During closed-door cultivation, he realized the intent could temporarily cut an opponent's connection to spiritual energy or Dao attainments 42.
- The technique consumes substantial focus and mana when used against stronger opponents or complex techniques 22 39.
Formation Mastery
Xuan Chuan is an adept formation user and strategist, especially when preparing a battlefield in advance 6 23.
- He used the Lesser Heaven Cloudmist Sword Formation to trap Qiu Shou Immortal, Lingya Immortal, and their attackers outside his cave-dwelling 6.
- He guided the natural formation of Flowing Wave Mountain's secret realm, prematurely awakening the Kui Ox and using its natal thunder to severely injure Ji Meng 23.
- He designed the initial framework of the simplified Myriad Immortals Joint Defense Formation, which the Three Xiao Sisters refined into a scalable defensive formation 31.
- He deployed a remote formation with elite Jiejiao disciples to counter Wenshu's Dragon-Binding Pillar at Chentang Pass 50.
Merit Path
Xuan Chuan advocates gaining Heavenly Dao Merit through righteous action as a means to reduce Jiejiao's Karmic Force and strengthen its disciples 16.
- He organized missions to defend Human Race tribes along the Eastern Sea Coast 16.
- Merit improved his heavenly-secret perception, fate concealment, and calculation abilities 20.
- He used Merit and fate to interfere with the Treasure-Dropping Coin, allowing Zhao Gongming to settle his karmic dispute with Xiao Sheng and Cao Bao 30.
- The Merit within the Fate-Cutting Sword can form a protective barrier that resists hostile laws and Samadhi True Fire 39.
Other Techniques
- The One That Escapes — A movement technique derived from The One That Escaped; it follows abnormal, fate-shifting trajectories to evade attacks 22.
- One Qi Transforms into Three Purities — He employs a simplified version to create afterimages and confuse weaker opponents 19.
- Violet Firmament Divine Thunder — Used through the Purple Lightning Hammer to punish traitors and destroy Long-Eared Dingguang Immortal's body and soul 15.
- Karmic perception — He can sense the density and nature of Karmic Force surrounding Jiejiao disciples, identifying major offenders such as Ma Yuan 4.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Creation Jade Disc Fragment — An accompanying treasure within his sea of consciousness that calms his mind, isolates karmic entanglement, assists deduction, and autonomously protects him from intrusion 1 8.
- Chaos Pearl Fragment — A fragment fused with his Primordial Spirit; it warns him of danger, conceals heavenly secrets, and became the foundation of his natal sword 21 24.
- Purple Lightning Hammer — Master Tongtian's thunder-law treasure, lent to Xuan Chuan to enforce sect discipline; it can cripple cultivation and unleash Violet Firmament Divine Thunder 3 15.
- “Jie” Token — A command token granting access to Jiejiao's non-core resources, ancient texts, formations, and miscellaneous studies for his rectification campaign 10.
- Fate-Cutting Sword — His natal Acquired Merit Spirit Treasure, forged from the Chaos Pearl Fragment, Innate Thunder-Pattern Iron, Heavenly Dao Merit, and his own Dao rhythm 24 25.
Relationships
- Master Tongtian — His master and Jiejiao's sect leader. Xuan Chuan openly challenged him over the sect's future; Tongtian later authorized his reforms, provided the Purple Lightning Hammer and “Jie” Token, and intermittently protects him while insisting he become self-reliant 2 3 10 28 52.
- Zhao Gongming — Junior brother, major ally, and one of Jiejiao's foremost fighters. Xuan Chuan won his support by warning him of the tribulation and later helped him resolve his karmic entanglement at Wuyi Mountain 6 30.
- Yunxiao, Qiongxiao, and Bixiao — The Three Xiao Sisters of Three Immortals Island. After Xuan Chuan revealed their hidden cultivation issues and warned them of future calamities, they became his committed allies and helped perfect the Myriad Immortals Joint Defense Formation 7 31.
- Duobao Daoist — Senior fellow disciple and powerful core member of Jiejiao. Duobao tested Xuan Chuan through a spar, later acknowledged his potential, and assisted with testing the Ten Thousand Immortals Formation 25 43.
- Shiji — Jiejiao disciple rescued by Xuan Chuan from her foretold death at Qianyuan Mountain. She later pledges loyalty to him and accompanies him to Chentang Pass 36 40 47.
- Long-Eared Dingguang Immortal — Former Seven Attendant Immortal and internal traitor. Xuan Chuan uncovered his contact with the Western Teachings, abolished his cultivation, and executed him for betrayal 11 14 15.
- Qiu Shou Immortal — A recurring internal opponent who attacked Xuan Chuan's cave-dwelling and later attempted to defect to the Western Teachings with a formation diagram; Xuan Chuan publicly tried and punished him 6 33 35.
- Winged Immortal — A Zenith Heaven Golden Immortal who accused Xuan Chuan of abusing his authority and threatened him after Tongtian intervened in their conflict 27 28.
- Primordial Heavenly Venerable — Chanjiao's Saint leader, who regards Xuan Chuan as a dangerous variable and eventually directs Saintly killing intent at him 51 52.
- Lady Pingxin — Ruler of the Netherworld and master of the Earthly Dao. Xuan Chuan seeks her as a potential ally against the threats surrounding Jiejiao 53 54.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Jiejiao Rectification
Xuan Chuan begins his campaign by surviving Tongtian's punishment and receiving authority to reform Jiejiao. He establishes the sect's new rules, publicly punishes Ma Yuan, suppresses rebellious disciples, and uses the execution of Long-Eared Dingguang Immortal to deter further betrayal 3 4 15.
He balances punishment with the Merit Path, directing disciples to protect the Human Race. The resulting Merit reduces Karmic Force, proves the value of his reforms, and gathers support from Zhao Gongming and the Three Xiao Sisters 16 20.
Internal Betrayal and Sect Consolidation
Using the “Jie” Token and The One That Escaped, Xuan Chuan investigates Long-Eared Dingguang Immortal's dealings with the Western Teachings. He later exposes Qiu Shou Immortal's attempted theft of a formation diagram through a deliberate trap, leading to a wider purge of sect traitors 11 33 35.
Following the public trials, Jiejiao's fortune stabilizes and Xuan Chuan becomes the sect's effective second-in-command beneath Tongtian 35.
Flowing Wave Mountain and the Fate-Cutting Sword
Guided by a karmic thread, Xuan Chuan discovers the Flowing Wave Mountain secret realm, its prenatal Kui Ox, and Innate Thunder-Pattern Iron. Though confronted by Demon Saint Ji Meng, he uses the secret realm's natural formation and the Kui Ox's thunder to force Ji Meng's retreat 21 23.
He then refines the Chaos Pearl Fragment, Thunder-Pattern Iron, and Merit into the Fate-Cutting Sword. Passing its Heavenly Thunder Tribulation advances him into the Primordial Unity Golden Immortal realm 24 25.
Formation Building and External Opposition
After Winged Immortal challenges his authority, Xuan Chuan responds by building alliances among Jiejiao's core disciples. With Zhao Gongming and the Three Xiao Sisters, he develops and trains trustworthy disciples in the simplified Myriad Immortals Joint Defense Formation, later expanded toward the Ten Thousand Immortals Formation 29 31 43.
Altering the Investiture of the Gods
Xuan Chuan uses his deduction to identify Jiejiao disciples endangered by the emerging tribulation. He intervenes to save Shiji from Taiyi's scheme, proving that an individual tragedy tied to the Investiture can be altered and slightly improving Jiejiao's fortune 36 40.
At Chentang Pass, he protects Nezha's soul, resists attacks from the Western Teachings, and forces Wenshu and Taiyi to withdraw by combining Fate-Cutting Sword intent with the Ten Thousand Immortals Formation 47 48 50.
Alliance with the Earthly Dao
After Primordial Heavenly Venerable's killing intent makes clear that he is a major target, Xuan Chuan plans to unite Jiejiao with the Netherworld and the Dragon Clan of the Four Seas. He sends a formal calling card to Lady Pingxin and enters the Netherworld alone to discuss its constrained position under the Heavenly Dao 53 54.
Trivia
- Xuan Chuan's original body was so secluded that many newly initiated Jiejiao disciples had nearly forgotten their chief eldest disciple existed 1.
- He survived a direct Saint-level palm strike while still only a Peak Golden Immortal, an event that shocked the Seven Attendant Immortals 3.
- The Fate-Cutting Sword is three feet and three inches long, with a dark-violet blade marked by silver-white lightning patterns 24.
- His reforms transform Jiejiao's fortune from a scattered mass burdened by crimson karmic force into a more stable blue-violet flow, though Tribulation Qi remains 51.
