Pre-Reform Condition

Jiejiao teaches without discrimination and has gathered “ten thousand immortals,” ranging from true inheritors to outer and registered disciples. Its inclusiveness creates a vast lineage, but also leaves it filled with disciples of uneven character and heavy karmic burdens. 1 9 35

At the beginning of the story, Xuan Chuan perceives Jiejiao’s fortune as blanketed by scarlet Karmic Force. He concludes that the sect’s accumulated slaughter and entanglements make it a primary target of the coming Investiture of the Gods Tribulation. 1

Xuan Chuan’s Rectification

Xuan Chuan initially urges Master Tongtian to disband Jiejiao in order to preserve its lineage. Although Tongtian nearly kills him for this proposal, he ultimately grants Xuan Chuan authority to investigate disciples’ karma, discipline offenders, expel major criminals, and execute rebels when necessary. 2 3

The chief disciple begins the reforms by publicly crippling Ma Yuan’s cultivation for his crimes. He then promulgates new rules on Golden Turtle Island, establishing discipline through registration requirements, restrictions on oppression, and severe penalties for wanton slaughter. 4 5

The reforms face resistance from several influential disciples, including Qiu Shou Immortal, Lingya Immortal, Golden Light Immortal, and Long-Eared Dingguang Immortal. Long-Eared’s attempted theft and secret dealings with the Western Teachings expose an internal betrayal network. 8 11

Merit Path and External Action

Rather than relying solely on punishment, Xuan Chuan directs disciples toward acquiring Heavenly Dao Merit through protecting mortals and performing beneficial works. The first mission aids Human Race settlements along the Eastern Sea Coast against a demonic beast tide. 16 17

The mission exposes Xiao Zhen of Chanjiao, who catalyzed demonic beasts to massacre humans and intended to shift the resulting Karmic Force onto nearby Jiejiao disciples. Xuan Chuan cripples Xiao Zhen and establishes the Merit Path’s practical value to the sect. 18 19 20

Purge of Traitors

Qiu Shou Immortal attempts to steal formation diagrams and defect to the Western Teachings. After Saint Zhunti’s incarnation fails to remove him from Jiejiao custody, Xuan Chuan conducts a public trial at the Immortal-Slaying Platform. 34 35

Qiu Shou is convicted of betrayal, theft, and intended defection; Lingya Immortal and two inner disciples are likewise punished for secretly undermining the new rules and passing information to outsiders. The proceedings secure Xuan Chuan’s position as Jiejiao’s second-ranking figure after Master Tongtian. 35

Resistance to the Investiture of the Gods

Jiejiao’s reformed leadership begins intervening in tribulations that would otherwise claim its disciples. Xuan Chuan, Zhao Gongming, and Yunxiao rescue Shiji from True Person Taiyi, preventing her refinement beneath the Nine-Dragon Divine Fire Hood and denying Chanjiao an early victim for the Investiture of the Gods List. 36 38 39

Jiejiao later intervenes at Chentang Pass, where Xuan Chuan and Shiji secure Nezha’s soul and golden body despite opposition from Taiyi and Wenshu Guangfa Heavenly Venerable. The event spreads Xuan Chuan’s name throughout the Primordial World and greatly strengthens sect morale. 48 50 51

Heaven-Severing Thread

Master Tongtian teaches that Jiejiao’s path lies in finding The One That Escaped within fixed fate and seizing a thread of vitality for living beings. 9

Xuan Chuan reinterprets this principle: before disciples seek external opportunities, they must first free themselves from Karmic Force and moral corruption. He argues that a sect unable to cleanse its own fortune cannot protect its lineage or seize vitality for others. 9

Sect Rules and Discipline

• Wonton slaughter is forbidden — disciples who kill innocent beings may be whipped according to their Karmic Force until body and soul are destroyed. 5
