Background / History

Zoro was a feared bounty hunter in the East Blue, where his reputation as the “Pirate Hunter” made even pirates with bounties above ten million Berries wary of him. He was known as a powerful swordsman and a “humanoid beast.” 6 8 10

In Shells Town, Zoro accepted imprisonment at the Marine base to protect Rika, her mother, and their tavern from Helmeppo. Under their agreement, he would remain tied to a post without food or water for a month; when Luffy and Rayson found him, he had endured twenty days. Helmeppo intended to execute him regardless. 12

Luffy retrieved Zoro’s three swords and offered him a place aboard the Straw Hat Pirates. Choosing piracy over dying before fulfilling his vow to become the world’s greatest swordsman, Zoro freed himself and joined the crew. 14 15

Appearance

Zoro projects a tangible, beast-like pressure even while restrained, with sharp eyes compared to those of a ferocious beast. 10 11
