Background
Teach originally joined the Whitebeard Pirates while concealing his real objective: obtaining the Dark-Dark Fruit. He was willing to become Whitebeard’s “son” to remain close to an opportunity to claim it. 299
After the Mary Geoise incident threw the world into disorder, Teach used the resulting chaos to establish a rapidly expanding covert organization. It drew in ambitious people seeking freedom, change, or the destruction of the old order; Teach remained deliberately hidden from most members, strengthening their reverence for him. 343
Having secured the Dark-Dark Fruit, Teach began preparing to challenge Whitebeard and seize the Tremor-Tremor Fruit. He recruited capable figures such as Kuro as pieces in a larger plan rather than as equals. 376
Teach captured Whitebeard commanders Jozu and Thatch, intending to use them as bargaining chips for a Shichibukai position and to provoke a larger conflict between the World Government and the Whitebeard Pirates. 387 His scheme succeeded in making him a Shichibukai, after which he captured Orlumbus for another undisclosed operation. 388 396
He next targeted Impel Down, intending to release its imprisoned pirates and turn their strength into his own. The plan brought him into direct conflict with Jin An, who defeated him so thoroughly that Blackbeard’s body was delivered to Pangaea Castle as research material. 399 407 413
Teach regenerated from his dismembered body through black thread-like tissue, intimidated the laboratory staff into leading him to the treasury, and looted its Devil Fruits, technology, and research results. During the escape, he acquired the Gum-Gum Fruit and discovered his rubber body. 413 414
Appearance
Teach is a massive, rough-looking man with dark brown skin, thick body hair, fluffy black hair, and several missing teeth. His dark headscarf, heavy jewelry, and intimidating build reinforce his image as a pirate ruler. 343
- Scarred face and a ferocious expression. 343
- Thick black beard and fluffy black hair beneath a dark headscarf. 343
- Two heavy chain necklaces and thick bracelets on both wrists. 343
- Different jeweled rings worn on all ten fingers. 343
- Often wears a black robe or cloak while addressing subordinates. 376 437
Personality
Teach is patient, calculating, and intensely ambitious. Rather than pursue every available prize, he prefers nearby territory and steady expansion when a larger target would attract too much attention. He believes that lasting power belongs to those who can remain calm. 343
He treats allies, prisoners, and recruits as tools. Jozu and Thatch were bargaining chips; Orlumbus was an “admission ticket”; and potential recruits such as Kuro were pieces on his board. Teach’s only consistent principle is victory, regardless of honor, reputation, or human cost. 376 387 396
His confidence frequently turns manic in battle. Even while severely wounded, he laughs at his enemies’ hatred and takes pleasure in the danger they pose. 631 632 However, when Jin An corners him, Teach’s arrogance gives way to visible fear and panic. 647 649
Abilities & Skills
Dark-Dark Fruit
Teach’s primary Devil Fruit grants control over darkness, gravitational force, and a dark space capable of consuming matter.
- Uses Dark Water to generate a powerful pull that drags in stone, pillars, dust, and nearby enemies. 377
- Can create disorienting dark spaces that distort gravity and restrict movement. 627
- Stores stolen research, Devil Fruits, technology, and other objects inside a dark space accessible only to him. 414
- Develops the power to devour incoming attacks and, under extreme conditions, rebound force or absorb an attacker’s strength. 650
- The fruit amplifies the pain Teach suffers, making Jin An’s Haki-infused blows especially damaging. 407
Human-Human Fruit, Mythical Zoan: Nika Form
Initially identified by Teach as the Gum-Gum Fruit, his second Devil Fruit grants rubber physiology before revealing its Nika form. 414 627
- His body can stretch across great distances and strike with elastic force. 414
- Rubber physiology grants strong resistance, flexibility, recovery, and endurance. 414 417
- Nika Form alters surrounding gravity and destabilizes space itself. 627
- Combines elastic attacks with darkness-based suppression, making his movements difficult to predict. 629
- The Nika Fruit’s effects contribute to his abnormal resilience and make him exceptionally difficult to kill. 647
Regeneration
Teach possesses a bizarre ability to recover from otherwise fatal injuries.
- His severed body reassembled through fine black threads after being delivered to Pangaea Castle as a corpse. 413
- He can recover from severe chest wounds and regrow lost limbs at visible speed. 642
- Repeatedly returns to battle after being incapacitated, including when drums from within his heart restore his strength. 649 650
Observation Haki
Teach possesses sharp battle instincts and Observation Haki.
- Detects Jin An’s concealed killing intent despite being unable to locate its source. 377
- Reacts immediately by launching Dark Water rather than dismissing the threat. 377
