Nature
The Void is a dimension parallel to reality, possessing its own laws and life forms. During cyclical Overlap Periods occurring every few thousand years, the boundary between the two dimensions weakens naturally. Uncontrolled merging, however, threatens both worlds with destruction. 241
Ancient records describe the seven keys as instruments of balance: they can strengthen the Dimensional Barrier, open a dimensional gate, or close one depending on the user’s intent and the flow of power. 241 251
A separate account recovered by Sabo identifies the Void as the residual consciousness of a once-advanced civilization that exhausted dimensional energy, collapsed into the gaps between dimensions, and became the Void Creatures encountered in the present. 293
Manifestations
| Form | Description |
|---|---|
| Void Energy | Purple or purple-black energy that erodes living beings, distorts the environment, and can be absorbed, purified, or controlled under specific conditions. 240 254 |
| Void Pollution Points | Areas where weakened dimensional barriers contaminate people and transform them into monstrous creatures. 214 |
| Void Rifts and Portals | Breaches linking reality to the Void; they permit Void Energy and creatures to enter the world. 258 293 |
| Void Creatures | Beings drawn to the energy of the seven keys. Some retain their own will and judgment rather than acting as mindless enemies. 244 250 |
| Void Avatars | Incarnations of Void Will capable of distorting reality and erasing matter or territory at a conceptual level. 317 326 |
| Voidified Humans | Individuals whose bodies and minds are altered by Void Energy, often displaying black markings and violet eyes. 210 395 |
Abilities & Properties
Dimensional Overlap
The Void can overlap with reality when the Dimensional Barrier weakens, allowing its energy and inhabitants to cross into the physical world.
- Overlap Periods are cyclical natural phenomena, not inherently acts of invasion. 241
- Artificially opening or accelerating a passage destabilizes the balance between dimensions. 192 232
- The World Government’s Ascension Ritual was intended to fully open the gate at Mary Geoise. 232
Corrosion and Assimilation
Void Energy can contaminate bodies, consciousnesses, and institutions.
- Contamination can transform civilians into monsters at Void Pollution Points. 214
- Individuals can be controlled while retaining fragments of their original consciousness, as seen with Bell-mère and Ace. 235 395 396
- Those trapped in the Dimensional Boundary risk eventual assimilation into Void Creatures. 259
- Voidification does not always erase the host completely; brief moments of resistance and pain can remain. 235 396
Reality Distortion
Powerful Void manifestations alter the laws of the surrounding world.
- Void Avatars cause gravity to fail, time to become chaotic, and space to warp. 326
- Their attacks can erase areas conceptually rather than merely destroying them physically. 317
- Void Energy can twist matter, reverse local physical laws, and deform the environment around an avatar. 329
Connection to Consciousness
The Void is linked to thought, memory, and will.
- Void Energy can influence and consume consciousness, creating internal struggles between a host’s original self and Void will. 298 395
- Sabo learned to communicate with corrupted consciousnesses through his connection to the Void Dimension. 298
- Void Creatures can recognize the purpose of key holders and choose not to obstruct them. 250
Limits and Countermeasures
The Void can be resisted, redirected, and purified; it is not an absolute force of evil.
- The seven keys can create a field that strengthens and repairs the Dimensional Barrier. 241 258
- Key holders can disrupt the energy lines connecting Void-controlled ships. 239
- The Dawn Blade can absorb and purify Void Energy, though prolonged exposure initially marked Lin Ye’s body. 235 240
- The Flame Key can temporarily suppress Void contamination on Lin Ye’s arm. 240
- Lin Ye’s controlled Void Energy solidified a Void-merged Five Elder, demonstrating that identical energy can produce different results depending on its user. 254
- The seven keys are tools of balance rather than weapons inherently aligned with either creation or destruction. 251
History
Ancient Balance and the Great Hollow Event
In the distant past, humanity nearly perished during the Great Hollow Event before the Void was barely sealed with the seven keys. 232 The Ancient Civilization later established systems, artifacts, and guardian equipment specifically to resist incursions by non-material beings from the other dimension. 193
The separation of reality and the Void created the Pattern Bearers, rare descendants capable of controlling Void Energy and maintaining balance between dimensions. Their numbers dwindled across the centuries, leaving later generations to mistake emerging patterns for a curse or contamination. 262
The Renewed Invasion
During the present crisis, more than fifty islands became Void incubation grounds, while many World Government officials—including members of the Five Elders—fell under Void influence. 232 The Five Elders sought to open the gate fully through the Ascension Ritual at Mary Geoise. 232
Lin Ye and the other key holders ultimately activated the altar ritual, closed Void rifts, restored the Dimensional Barrier, and suppressed the Void’s corrosion. The ritual pulled Lin Ye through the dimensional passage as the sealing network completed. 258
Reinterpretation of the Void
As the conflict continued, Lin Ye learned that the Void and reality were originally counterparts necessary to the universe’s balance. The danger arose when one side attempted to devour the other. 251
After resolving a later Void crisis without annihilating its remaining forces, Lin Ye stated that the Void had a rightful place: endings, death, and nothingness give meaning to beginnings, rebirth, and existence. Several former Void-aligned entities accepted transformation into guardians rather than destruction. 557
