Background / History
Hongjun originated as a strand of Chaos essence that gained intelligence when heaven and earth opened. Upon taking form, he bore the Dao title Hongjun and already possessed Zenith Heaven Golden Immortal cultivation. During his travels, he obtained the Pangu Banner, Taiji Diagram, Qiankun Cauldron, and the damaged Creation Jade Butterfly; guided by the Heavenly Dao, he later entered seclusion to seek the Great Dao 19.
During Luohu's demonic calamity, Hongjun left seclusion to confront the Demon Ancestor. Their clash shattered space and forced surrounding innate great gods to flee. Hongjun declared that he would “uphold justice on behalf of Heaven and slay” Luohu, then pursued the battle into Chaos 19 20. After Luohu's fall, Hongjun appeared unharmed, departed without explanation, and was followed by a descent of Heavenly Dao merit upon the deities who had fought the demonic beasts 21.
After the Witch Race established the Witch-Creation Formation and the Heavenly Dao became clear, Hongjun attained the Dao and sainthood. He proclaimed that all beings with affinity could come to Purple Cloud Palace beyond the Thirty-Three Heavens to hear his teachings 36.
At his first sermon, Hongjun arranged the palace seating, ending Kunpeng and Zhun Ti's dispute by assigning Zhun Ti a newly produced eighth cushion. He then lectured on the innate Grand Dao for 2,900 years before allowing a final hundred years for questions 41 42.
Appearance
Hongjun is portrayed as an ordinary-looking elderly man whose restrained appearance contrasts with his overwhelming authority.
- White hair and a stern, white-robed appearance during his battle with Luohu 19.
- Wears the Purple Firmament Limitless Crown and Purple Firmament Limitless Robe at Purple Cloud Palace 41.
- Has an expressionless, ethereal bearing that silences the gathered great powers upon his arrival 41.
- Later appears gentle and approachable in manner, though Mu Jizi regards him as fundamentally aligned with the merciless Heavenly Dao 46.
Personality
Hongjun is calm, detached, and authoritative. He does not indulge the rivalries of the great powers: when Kunpeng and Zhun Ti fight for a cushion, he resolves the issue with a gesture and proceeds directly to teaching 41.
His conduct is closely tied to cosmic order. He enters the conflict with Luohu because he must shoulder the duty of slaying demons and defending the Dao, and he frames Luohu's crimes as a matter requiring judgment on Heaven's behalf 19.
As a teacher, Hongjun answers Mu Jizi's doubts patiently and explains distinctions between the Dao, the Heavenly Dao, and the rules governing power in Chaos and the Primordial Wilderness 46.
