Appearance

Red Cloud usually appears as a middle-aged Daoist in a scarlet robe marked with stains, showing little concern for his personal appearance. His true body is an immense, densely concentrated red cloud overflowing with innate spiritual energy. 29 31

Personality

Red Cloud is compassionate, idealistic, and deeply opposed to needless killing. He intervenes when Kunpeng kills Antelope Old Monster and argues that cultivators should show mercy whenever possible. 29 30

His kindness is paired with an excessive concern for appearances and karmic goodwill. Although he recognizes that the purple jade cushion at Purple Cloud Palace contains hidden providence, Zhunti exploits Red Cloud’s sympathy and public reputation to persuade him to surrender it. 40

He is not incapable of anger or battle. Kunpeng’s contempt for his beliefs provokes him into a duel, and their continuing hostility later leads Red Cloud to confront Kunpeng again in the chaos. 30 43

Conflict with Kunpeng

Red Cloud arrives while Antelope Old Monster is attempting to use him against Mu Jizi and Kunpeng. He tries to stop the dispute, but Kunpeng kills Antelope Old Monster before him and rejects Red Cloud’s call for mercy. 29

Their disagreement becomes a direct duel. Red Cloud initially withstands Kunpeng with evasive movement and sword-finger techniques, but Kunpeng overwhelms him with greater cultivation, the Northern Black-Origin Water-Control Flag, Roc-form flight, and Devouring. 30 31

Red Cloud ultimately escapes only after Kunpeng devours most of his true body; a small remnant separates and flees. 31

Purple Cloud Palace

At Purple Cloud Palace, Red Cloud obstructs Kunpeng’s attempt to seize a purple jade cushion, briefly taking the sixth position before fear of Kunpeng forces him onto the seventh cushion. 39

Zhunti then appeals to Red Cloud’s compassion on behalf of Jieyin and the barren Western Realm. Believing the exchange will create a favorable karmic bond, Red Cloud gives up his cushion to Jieyin despite suspecting that it contains significant providence. 40

Coalition in the Chaos

Red Cloud later joins Zhen Yuanzi, King Father of the East, Queen Mother of the West, Jieyin, and Zhunti in confronting Mu Jizi, Kunpeng, Xihe, and Yuehua. He directly challenges Kunpeng over their earlier enmity while Jieyin and Zhunti move to restrain Mu Jizi. 43
