Background
Yun Shang is the son of Gu Lin's younger uncle and aunt. Before attending school, he frequently went to his maternal grandfather's martial arts school; his mother later instructed him not to fight casually because she feared he might seriously injure someone. 36
He was initially educated at home before his parents enrolled him in a private high school so that he could interact more with others. He remained isolated at school, where classmates excluded him, and was highly protective of his belongings. 25
At Gu Lin's grandmother's birthday gathering, Yun Shang was introduced as a quiet high-school student absorbed in mobile games. He took the unusual initiative of watching Su Yu play, praised his skill, and became Su Yu's game friend. 19 After several days without speaking, he asked for a WeChat account so he could communicate and play with Su Yu. 20
Appearance
Yun Shang is first depicted as a high-school student with a restrained, neat appearance.

- Guards his backpack and personal possessions from being touched. 25
- Has bright, animal-like eyes when excited or pleased. 52
Personality
Yun Shang is reserved, literal-minded, and slow to respond verbally, often remaining in his own world even around family. His silence does not mean he is inattentive: he remembers instructions carefully, including his mother's warning not to hurt people and Su Yu's advice to stand up for himself. 36 38
He is notably obedient and trusting toward Su Yu. He follows Su Yu's lead in games and outings, offers him Rubik's Cubes and chocolates, and unhesitatingly chooses Su Yu's side when asked to imagine a conflict with Gu Lin. 26 56 108
