Background
Destiny Arts Masters cultivate the Spirit Platform, sharing an origin with Dao Cultivators. Because Fate Arts are generally weak in direct combat, many also cultivate Dao arts for self-protection. Rare practitioners receive Righteousness Swords as an additional means of defense 37.
Their practice centers on the invisible Destiny Mansion within each person. A Destiny Mansion contains such components as Destiny Grounds, Destiny Pillars, Destiny Stars, Destiny Spirits, and Destiny Patterns; together, these determine a person's fate. Most of its structure is fixed from birth and difficult to change 17.
The core purpose of Fate Arts is not mere fortune-telling. A Destiny Arts Master analyzes the relations among Destiny Molds, clarifies Heaven's Mandate and human fate, and can influence—or completely change—a person's destiny. Qi-Gazing and Fortune-Observing are only foundational skills 42.
After Great Qi was founded, the Heaven's Mandate Sect confiscated Books of Fate, prohibited private trade in them, and allowed only ranked Destiny Arts Masters to formally teach Fate Arts. Folk inheritances consequently declined; practitioners seeking instruction must join a Fate Arts sect, trade at Beast Bridge, or work for the Black Lantern Bureau 179.
Rank and Advancement
| Rank / stage | Primary focus | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lower Rank | Qi-Gazing and Fortune-Observing | The entry specialization of ranked practitioners 713 |
| Middle Rank | Momentum Configurations | Middle Rank practitioners may perform Pillar-Shifting Life-Changing, though doing so safely remains extremely difficult and dangerous 501 713 |
| Upper Rank | Advanced Momentum Configurations | Mastering Momentum Configurations is the only path to Upper Rank; many Middle Rank practitioners devote their lives to this study without advancing 713 |
| Grand Destiny Arts Master | World-scale fate and Momentum Configuration mastery | A First Rank Destiny Arts Master is considered half a step into Beyond-Rank; even Second Rank practitioners may generally be called Grand Destiny Arts Masters 594 |
| Beyond-Rank | Exceptional pinnacle | Beyond-Rank Destiny Arts Masters are exceedingly rare 594 |
Core Practices
Fate Reading
Fate Reading judges a person's destiny through the Destiny Mansion.
| Type | Scope | Requirements / characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| Complete Fate | A person's entire life | Anyone capable of it is undoubtedly a Grand Destiny Arts Master 17 |
| Current Fate | Present circumstances | Uses the Destiny Mansion, Four Pillars, and Eight Characters; the most common form of Fate Reading 17 |
| Annual Fate | Fortune and misfortune of the coming year | Heavily affected by environment, season, broader circumstances, and especially Fortune 17 |
Qi-Gazing and Fortune-Observing
Qi-Gazing and Fortune-Observing are foundational Fate Arts used to examine a subject's qi, fortune, and visible fate signs. High Rank individuals are protected by both court Fortune and their own Destiny Molds, so a practitioner must first conduct Fate Reading and deduce a sufficiently clear Destiny Mold before judging their Fortune 42.
Physiognomic Formation Technique
The Physiognomic Formation Technique completes the three foundational abilities of a Destiny Arts Master alongside Qi-Gazing and Fate Reading. It is a valued technique that some practitioners spend years and considerable resources to obtain 190.
Destiny Molds and Destiny Stars
Orthodox Fate Arts calculate a person's Destiny Stars, determine whether they can form a Destiny Pattern, and assess whether that pattern may evolve into a Destiny Spirit. These calculations employ birth information, multiple supporting factors, and school-specific secret arts 32.
- Destiny Stars are among the most expensive resources in the Fate Arts world; concealment and disaster-dispelling types are particularly valued 181.
- Independent Destiny Stars are especially sought-after hard currency. They may be created through long-term Life-Seizing Arts or persist after the death of people with unusual destinies 180.
- Other practitioners generally cannot directly see Destiny Stars within a Destiny Mansion and must deduce them through Fate Arts; Hidden Destiny Stars can therefore cause their deductions to fail 404.
- A Hidden Destiny Star can produce counter-restraint, causing an enemy's supposedly suppressive Fate Art to instead strengthen its target's Destiny Mold or backlash against its caster 404.
Destiny Patterns and Destiny Spirits
Destiny Patterns arise from compatible Destiny Molds and Stars, while Destiny Spirits represent a further development. Their value becomes increasingly important at higher grades of Fate Arts practice 181.
- A properly formed Destiny Spirit can elevate a cultivator beyond what rank alone suggests 191.
- Imbalanced elements within a Destiny Ground can prevent a Destiny Spirit from condensing 501.
- Destiny Pillars are the roots of Destiny Stars, while Destiny Grounds are the foundations of Destiny Pillars 501.
Momentum Configurations
Momentum Configurations are advanced Fate Arts created through the combined momentum of people, places, organizations, cities, and natural Fortune. They are the specialty of Middle Rank practitioners and the indispensable path toward Upper Rank 713.
- A configuration may be formed by alliances of multiple people or forces 185.
- A practitioner can unravel hostile configurations through methods such as Ox-Knife Unravelling, Bamboo-Breaking Unravelling, or Grand Momentum techniques 594.
- A Grand Destiny Arts Master's hallmark is Momentum Configuration manifestation: treating a person as capable of determining a city, a city as a chess piece, and contending for the world from all directions 948.
- The highest purpose of Grand Momentum Configurations is constructive rather than destructive: “use destiny to mend heaven and earth; use destiny to mend the mortal world” 747.
Eerie Dispelling
Destiny Arts Masters can counter Eerie phenomena by treating them as Destiny Molds and applying Fate Arts accordingly. Their expertise makes them especially valuable to Night Guards confronting demons, curses, and strange events 71 102.
- Eerie dispelling requires analyzing the phenomenon's rules and applying Destiny Mold methods rather than relying on brute force 102.
- A strong Destiny Mold alone cannot necessarily resolve an Eerie; Fate Arts knowledge and command of the situation remain necessary 102 109.
Equipment and Resources
- Destiny Mansion — The internal foundation of Fate Arts, containing the structures that govern an individual's destiny 17.
- Destiny Artifact — A fate-based artifact used for applications such as capturing Destiny Stars, enhancing Fate Arts, or obstructing deductions 328 457.
- Destiny Disk — A key Fate Arts tool used for calculation and deduction; it can assist with complex adjustments such as Pillar-Shifting Life-Changing 501.
- Fortune Fish — A consumable source of Fortune used to support deductions, rituals, and Destiny Artifacts 456.
- Fate Talismans — Supplemental tools that can temporarily address conflicts within a Destiny Ground, though they do not resolve underlying causes 501.
- Books of Fate — Foundational Fate Arts texts whose circulation and private trade were heavily restricted by the Heaven's Mandate Sect 179.
Limitations
- Fate Arts are usually inferior to Dao and martial cultivation in direct combat, leading many practitioners to cultivate supplementary Dao arts 37.
- Fate Reading is deduction rather than direct certainty; hidden Destiny Stars can make even careful calculations incorrect 404.
- Future projections are limited by the opponent's protections and do not guarantee safety against overwhelmingly strong Fate Arts 456.
- Pillar-Shifting Life-Changing can alter a person's Destiny Mold, but even minor errors may bring calamity or severe aberrations 501.
- Destiny Arts Masters often conceal their identities in dangerous competitions because their combat power is comparatively weak 324.
Notable Fate Arts
- Life Buying — Acquires another person's life through consent, a guarantor, and a Destiny Contract; in practice, it is borrowing, because the purchased Destiny Star vanishes if its original owner dies 71.
- Life-Seizing Art — Can gradually transform a purchased Destiny Star into an Independent Destiny Star over many years 180.
- Fate Projection — Uses Fate Arts and Fortune to deduce possible future moves, though only a limited number of outcomes may be visible 456.
- Life-Change Art — Alters or exchanges Destiny Patterns to create advantageous counterplay in Fate Arts conflict 456.
- Great Destiny Arts — The Heaven's Mandate Sect's supreme collective Fate Art. Its power draws upon every past and present practitioner who has learned it, making it extraordinarily potent for the sect but inherently unsuitable for outsiders 1169.
- Stellar Fate Arts — Advanced Fate Arts required for certain special spells and Momentum Configurations, including Ten Suns and Hundred Moons Suppress Heavenly Stars 843.
Philosophy
“The basic skill of Fate Arts is learning Fate Arts.” 538
True mastery requires more than reaching a single summit of knowledge. It means approaching Fate Arts from every direction, understanding every part without blind spots, and steadily building a complete road of comprehension 887.
