"Ha ha, bedhead, mind your appearance when you go out, Chu Yang!" Professor Sprout waved her wand and smoothed Chu Yang's messy hair.
"You didn't give me time to fix it, Professor." Chu Yang shrugged and defended himself innocently.
"Hurry downstairs for breakfast. We have a lot to buy today." Sprout turned and headed downstairs, her heavy body making the wooden stairs creak with a teeth-grating sound beneath her feet.
Chu Yang followed behind her at a safe distance, afraid she might snap the staircase with a single step.
Bread, jam, milk, and sausages—the classic four-piece breakfast.
The breakfast served by the Leaky Cauldron was hardly delicious, enough to fill one's stomach at best, but Chu Yang still cleaned every last bit from his bowl.
Children from orphanages never wasted food.
After they finished eating, the two left through the back door of the Leaky Cauldron. After walking a few steps, they were stopped by a wall. Chu Yang felt a little excited. He knew that on the other side was Diagon Alley, the symbol of the true wizarding world.
"The third brick above the trash can, then count two bricks to the side. Remember it, then tap it three times. The passage to Diagon Alley will open."
Sprout took out her wand and lightly tapped the bricks three times. The wall before them seemed to come alive, folding away to both sides as a mysterious world unfolded before Chu Yang.
Sprout walked at the front and led the way.
As they went, she introduced Chu Yang to everything about the alley.
"Besides the entrance behind the Leaky Cauldron, there are two other ways to reach Diagon Alley. One is Apparition, which I used earlier, and the other is Floo Powder."
"However, Apparition has extremely demanding casting requirements. Ordinary wizards find it difficult to master. Usually, only professor-level wizards like me can perform it with ease."
"Floo Powder is much easier to use, and it isn't expensive either. Two Silver Sickles per scoop. It's the preferred means of travel for many wizarding families."
Sprout pointed at the fireplaces along both sides of the street and explained, "Floo Powder only works in fireplaces connected to the Floo Network. It's very simple to use. Just hold a handful of Floo Powder, stand inside the fireplace, clearly say the name of your destination, then toss down the Floo Powder."
At this point, Sprout suddenly turned around and looked at Chu Yang seriously. "Remember, when you say the destination, you must pronounce every word clearly. Otherwise, the consequences can be severe. Understand?"
Chu Yang replied, "If you say the name wrong, you'll be sent somewhere strange, right?"
"More than that. Some people mispronounced a destination and ended up transported into a wall, dying on the spot." Sprout sighed. "I don't want to see your name on the accidental casualty list, Chu Yang."
Hearing that, Chu Yang silently nodded.
Afterward, Sprout took Chu Yang to a robe shop and had three robes, a pointed hat, protective gloves, and a winter cloak tailored for him.
There was also the cauldron needed for Potions. As for a pet, Chu Yang chose an owl. He could only choose an owl—what normal person would choose a toad or a rat?
This was something Sprout did every year, and she was thoroughly familiar with the process. In the blink of an eye, she had prepared most of the supplies they needed.
All expenses were covered by Hogwarts.
Now, only the wand remained!
Sprout and Chu Yang arrived at a wand shop that looked incredibly old.
Ollivander's!
"Welcome, Professor Sprout! Chestnut wood, Unicorn hair, ten and two-thirds inches long. You look travel-worn. Have you just returned from somewhere?"
An old man sporting the same hairstyle as Einstein slid down from a ladder and, after much difficulty, made his way through the wand boxes piled everywhere to reach Sprout.
Sprout smiled in reply. "Hello, Mr. Ollivander. Your memory is as excellent as ever."
"Of course. I remember every wand sold from this shop and its owner." Ollivander proudly raised his head, then glanced at Chu Yang. "Is this young wizard here to purchase a wand?"
Sprout explained, "He's one of Hogwarts' new students this year."
"Congratulations on entering Hogwarts. It is the finest school in the world, believe me. You'll have a brilliant future!" Ollivander blinked, then waved his wand. "Let me take your measurements first. Please don't move."
A set of measuring tools then began moving across Chu Yang's body under the control of Ollivander's Magic Power.
To be honest, Chu Yang could not understand what choosing a wand had to do with physical measurements. They were even measuring the distance between his eyes and nose.
"Every wand is unique. Its characteristics depend on the tree the wand wood comes from and the traits of the magical creature used for its core. Furthermore, once a wand finds its ideal owner, it begins teaching its own traits to them while learning the traits of its holder."
"A wand and its user complement each other. Even wands made from the same materials can develop entirely different traits after meeting vastly different owners."
As he spoke, Ollivander finished measuring Chu Yang and began searching for a suitable wand.
"Which hand is your dominant one?"
"Right hand!"
Ollivander bent over and rummaged through the piles of wand boxes for a while. At last, he pulled out a dust-covered wand box and held it before Chu Yang, gently blowing away the dust.
"Cough, cough, cough." Chu Yang coughed as he took the wand box from Ollivander and drew out the wand inside.
"Aspen wood, Dragon heartstring, ten inches. Give it a gentle wave. Remember, gently."
Following Ollivander's instructions, Chu Yang lightly waved the wand in his hand. An invisible shockwave burst outward and directly toppled the display cabinet behind Ollivander.
Sprout took several steps back, standing at the entrance of the wand shop as she clutched her chest and let out a long breath.
Ollivander jumped in fright, but he still found time to complain, "Very powerful Magic Power, young man, but it isn't right for you!"
"I'm sorry, Mr. Ollivander." Chu Yang hurriedly put the wand back. Even he had been startled by what had just happened.
He had forgotten that, due to the existence of the Soul Palace, his talents in every aspect far surpassed those of ordinary people.
"It's all right, child. This sort of thing happens from time to time, although such a commotion from someone your age is rare..."
Ollivander turned back to rummage through the shelves again, muttering, "Perhaps it's because of your Eastern heritage. I need to find you a wand from your homeland."
Generally speaking, Ollivander used three materials for wand cores: phoenix tail feathers, Unicorn hair, and Dragon heartstrings.
It was not that other materials did not exist. Ollivander simply used only the finest materials; that was his rule for making wands.
Therefore, aside from the three commonly used materials, Ollivander would also try to find rarer materials for making wands.
At last, Ollivander took out another dust-covered wand box.
