Most of the newspaper was filled with oversized, bold headlines like these. But what caught Qin Ran's eye—and made him pick the discarded paper back up—was the content beneath them.

More precisely, it was the content someone had marked.

"Sydney's gnawed remains found on Royal Street!"

"Poor Conti's head and half-eaten torso discovered on the lawn in Ontario Park!"

"Another tragedy: Paul's arm found in a fountain in Besshai. Police spokesperson says he may still be alive!"

All three reports had been underlined in black ballpoint pen.

If the newspaper hadn't fallen open, even Qin Ran, with his sharp eyesight, might have missed the underlines. The marks elsewhere on the page had drawn his attention first.

Why did Lena underline these?

Did he really know something about the 'beast'?

Qin Ran studied the marked reports, puzzled.

Ever since he realized Lena was hiding something, he had doubted Lena's claim to be a witness.

He had assumed Lena knew nothing. While fleeing his pursuers, Lena had happened to pass near the scene of a beast attack, and then Riley had appeared.

Desperate for Riley's protection, Lena had concealed the truth and lied.

But what lay before Qin Ran didn't quite fit that theory.

Did he study the cases just to make his lie more convincing to Riley?

The thought surfaced, but Qin Ran dismissed it almost immediately.
