By the time night had fully fallen, two bonfires were burning in the courtyard of Herbert's residence.
In the firelight, Herbert and his student Jonna were discussing something in low voices. Harold, who had returned with paper and pens, had not joined them.
The well-dressed young man was busy at the other bonfire with two coachmen and the household cook.
And Coffin, who had gone into town?
He had already returned with Pierre, bringing three tents with them.
After speaking with Herbert, however, Pierre had hurried away.
He had taken Coffin with him.
Before leaving, Herbert's steward, servant, and bodyguard had once again thanked Qin Ran.
Qin Ran had politely replied that it was only right.
Then he watched Pierre leave.
Nothing had been said outright, but the look on Pierre's face told Qin Ran that preparing for this trip to Aesop Ancient City would be far more complicated than he had imagined.
Besides the necessary supplies, they'll need...
Weapons!
Qin Ran was certain of his guess.
Weapons had not been on the original shopping list.
But after what had happened that afternoon, Herbert was bound to consider them.
Their brief acquaintance had already given Qin Ran some sense of Herbert's character.
He was neither stern nor stubborn like other "scholars."
He was optimistic and knew how to adapt.
What Qin Ran admired most, though, was Herbert's unwavering moral line.
To Qin Ran, a scholar who would rather have his bones broken than give in to extortion stood above most scholars who merely appeared tough.
"Mr. 2567, dinner's ready!"
"Please come eat!"
With his sleeves rolled up to his elbows and a trace of soot still on his hands, Harold walked over, wiping his hands as he spoke.
"Coming!"
Qin Ran smiled and nodded.
Jonna was already helping the cook.
