Background & History

Su Yu is a disciple of Cloudveil True Person, the leading figure of Sword-Coming Peak's Kan Water Lineage. When Shen Qingzhou joins the lineage, Cloudveil entrusts Su Yu with his initial instruction, giving him the first three levels of the Abyss-Sinking Formula through her. Her proposed timetable for testing him is characteristically casual: she will test him “when fate allows” and when she wakes up. 5

Before Shen Qingzhou's arrival, Su Yu left an iron box with the Xu Family of Peace River City under terms that obligated the family to grant one reasonable favor to whoever retrieved it. The account describes the original depositor as a wounded, silent girl; Shen suspects the story concerns Su Yu, though the connection is not explicitly confirmed. 8

She later explains that the Kan Water Lineage declined after the Heavenly River “ran dry,” damaging and contaminating many Kan Water paths while causing associated spiritual resources to disappear. Her master's resulting disillusionment and the lineage's marginal status are subjects on which she is unusually candid. 21

Appearance

Su Yu is most often seen in loose azure or green Daoist robes, with long hair casually scattered over her shoulders. Her habitual half-closed eyes and reclining posture reinforce her languid bearing. 33

  • Often rests in a rocking chair or lounge chair beneath a tree. 6 33
  • Her face flushes rosily after drinking fruit wine. 21
  • Following her battle with Sun Lie, she is pale, bloodied, and surrounded by disordered Kan Water spiritual currents. 59
  • During the crisis in Langhuan Blessed Land, Shen notices white strands at her temples and a more mature appearance. 81

Personality

Su Yu presents herself as lazy, irreverent, and unapologetically transactional. She delegates an errand to Shen because she is “lazy,” negotiates a share of his talisman sales, and is perfectly willing to use him as bait when testing danger in Blackwind Market. 7 13 14

Behind that indolence is a sharp, pragmatic cultivator. She understands market values, sect politics, Dao Lineage weaknesses, and the mechanics of Rituals. She can be patient when teaching, turning serious when Shen's questions reveal unusual insight, but she also expects him to learn self-reliance rather than depend on her protection. 6 10 33

In conflict, Su Yu is ruthlessly efficient. She uses ambushes, elemental advantage, and precise attacks rather than direct clashes, treats battlefield cleanup as routine, and divides spoils according to risk rather than sentiment. 17 Her concern for Shen and her fellow Kan Water disciples nevertheless becomes increasingly clear through her warnings, guidance, and willingness to share rare cultivation resources. 10 33 69

Abilities & Skills

Kan Water Spellcraft

Su Yu is a highly capable Kan Water cultivator whose attacks emphasize concealment, precision, dissolution, and control.

  • Dissolved Yellowstone True Person's rock armor and killed him after effortlessly breaking his Mountain-Shifting Art. 17
  • Killed two fleeing rogue cultivators with water droplets that pierced the backs of their heads. 17
  • Uses Ginseng-Merchant Bone-Melting Water, which injured Sun Lie badly enough to require ten days to half a month of recovery. 59
  • Demonstrates the Kan Water Lineage's advantage against poisons and demonic qi through its Jade Well Cleansing Water tradition. 6
  • Can travel at high speed using an azure escape light. 13

Talisman Dao

Su Yu is an accomplished talisman practitioner and Shen's first talisman instructor.

  • Teaches that Kan Water talismans use metal as their structure, water as their medium, and constellation power as their source. 7
  • Draws the Constellation Concealment Talisman by weaving Metal-Water qi into an intricate miniature formation. 7
  • Provides Shen with the Kan Water Talisman Compendium, containing methods and insights for three basic lineage talismans. 10
  • Negotiates the sale of Shen's talismans at Blackwind Market, securing 210 low-grade spirit stones through her knowledge of demand and rival merchants. 13
  • Later judges Shen's talisman attainments to be no different from her own. 69

Ritual Knowledge

Su Yu understands that a true Ritual requires more than combat success: it must restore or accomplish something recognized by Heaven and Earth.

  • Explains that killing Yellowstone True Person was only an obstacle; her meaningful act was restoring the corrupted Kan Water Site to water's control. 33
  • Directs Shen toward Blackwater Marsh as a place where he may pursue a Ritual of his own. 33
  • Her own cultivation appears to resonate continuously with surrounding water-element spiritual energy, even while she sleeps, though the method is slow. 33

Divine-Sense Cultivation

Su Yu practices Dream Crossing the Heavenly River, a method intended to strengthen divine sense. 69

  • Gives Shen a bone cylinder containing a second-rank Talisman Master's inheritance and a dangerous visualization diagram for divine-sense tempering. 69
  • Warns him not to immerse himself too deeply in the visualization, having experienced its harmful influence herself. 69

Equipment & Items

  • Iron box — A water-ripple-marked box retrieved from the Xu Family by Shen Qingzhou and accepted by Su Yu. 8 10
  • Kan Water Talisman Compendium — Given to Shen as payment for retrieving the iron box. 10
  • Fruit-wine gourd — Contains wine brewed from green-plum fruit and mountain spring water, buried for thirty years. 21
  • Grand Void Mirage Whale bone cylinder — A dangerous visualization-art inheritance she gives Shen to temper his divine sense. 69

Relationships

  • Cloudveil True Person / Cloud Hermit — Her master and the head of the Kan Water Lineage; his reclusiveness and past despair over the lineage's decline weigh heavily on her. 5 21
  • Shen Qingzhou — Junior brother, student, business partner, and eventual protector. She teaches him cultivation and talismans, repeatedly tests his judgment, and later relies on him during the conflict with the Sun Family. 5 7 60
  • Chen Song — Fellow Kan Water disciple who helps care for Su Yu after Sun Lie injures her. 59
  • Lin Wei — Fellow Kan Water disciple who helps care for Su Yu and explains the Sun Family's scheme against her. 59
  • Sun Lie — Sun Family cultivator who severely injures Su Yu to create an opening for another Sun Family disciple to challenge her ranking; Su Yu retaliates with Bone-Melting Water. 59
  • Xu Family — A Peace River City merchant family bound by an old obligation arising from Su Yu's deposited iron box. 8

Story Role / Major Arcs

Shen Qingzhou's Early Mentor

Yellowstone True Person Ambush

Su Yu deliberately draws out Yellowstone True Person and intervenes once he threatens Shen and the other disciples. She kills Yellowstone and his accomplices within moments, cleans the battlefield, and claims the larger share of the bounty for bearing the greater risk. 16 17

Revealing the Kan Water Lineage's Decline

After the dharma assembly, Su Yu drinks with Shen and reveals the catastrophe of the Heavenly River running dry, which left Kan Water inheritances incomplete, contaminated, and resource-starved. 21

Guidance Toward Rituals and the Northern Wastes

Su Yu clarifies the difference between private combat and a Heaven-and-Earth-recognized Ritual. She explains her own restoration of the Kan Water Site and directs Shen toward Blackwater Marsh, advising him to reach the seventh layer of Qi Refining before departing. 33

Sun Family Conflict

Sun Lie severely injures Su Yu in a ranking challenge designed to let another Sun Family disciple exploit her weakened state. Shen intervenes in her place, and Su Yu later acknowledges that he has grown enough to stand beside her rather than merely depend on her. 59 60

Langhuan Blessed Land Crisis

During the grand competition's calamity, Shen initially believes Su Yu has perished. She later reappears in the eerie fog, disperses it around him, and leads him toward shelter from the nightmares roaming the region. 81
