Background / History
Ace was born alongside his twin brother Kahn after Portgas D. Rouge prolonged her pregnancy for twenty months to conceal Roger's children from the World Government. Rouge died after giving birth, while Garp helped smuggle the twins away from the government search. 1
Raised on Mount Colubo by the Dadan Family, Ace grew up sparring with Kahn. Kahn's extraordinary power repeatedly left Ace feeling inferior, but it also forged his determination to surpass him. Garp subjected both boys to harsh physical training and taught them the Navy Six Powers. 4 5 6
Ace later trained and fought beside Sabo and Luffy. He became one of the three brothers shaped by Kahn's demanding standards, developing formidable physical strength, Haki, and aerial mobility while still young. 10 23 27
Roger's legacy remained Ace's deepest emotional conflict. He resented being defined by his father's name and feared that Ryuo represented Roger's shadow. Rayleigh's account of Roger and Rouge, together with a photograph of his parents, forced Ace to confront that pain; he ultimately chose to use his strength for himself rather than reject it because of its origin. 122 126 131
Appearance
By age thirteen, Ace is a lean, muscular boy with black hair and a fierce, wolf-like gaze. He commonly carries an iron pipe and later wears an orange cowboy hat. 82 112 150
- Orange cowboy hat, associated with his later appearances and his “Fire Fist Ace” identity. 150 366
- Iron pipe used as both weapon and Haki conduit. 150 247
- Fragment of Roger's old pirate flag tied around his left forearm during Rayleigh's training. 119 121
- Often manifests orange, yellow, white, or deep-blue flames around his hands without using a Devil Fruit. 101 355 366 367
Personality
Ace is intensely competitive, particularly toward Kahn. Kahn's overwhelming strength bruised his pride, yet Ace turns that frustration into relentless training rather than surrender. His ambition to become strong is tied to both a desire to surpass Kahn and a need to choose his own answer to Roger's legacy. 10 82 131
He is impulsive and confrontational when Sabo or Luffy are endangered, even threatening Garino when he believes Sabo has been sent into danger alone. However, Ace is also protective of ordinary people: in Udon, he intervenes against guards abusing prisoners and children, then helps give the prisoners a chance to escape. 100 247 254
Despite his rough manner, Ace responds strongly to kindness and domestic care. While staying with Peter Parker and Aunt May in New York, he quietly offers to help with physical work and gives Aunt May a valuable armlet to repay her hospitality. 187 188
Abilities & Skills
Navy Six Powers
Ace was trained in the Navy Six Powers from childhood and relies especially on Shave, Geppo, and Moonwalk-derived aerial movement.
- Uses Shave to vanish from an opponent's sight and close distance instantly. 193 247
- Uses Geppo for sustained aerial movement and high-speed repositioning. 23
- Combines Six Powers mobility with his iron pipe to overwhelm groups of armed opponents. 247
- His physical training allows him to bend rifles, broadswords, and other weapons through raw force. 39 247
Armament Haki
Ace can coat his body and weapons in Armament Haki, using it to strike Devil Fruit users and reinforce his already exceptional physical strength.
- Coats both fists and his iron pipe in black Armament Haki. 10 150
- Defeats Skull Crusher Garl with a single Haki-coated punch. 84
- Can shatter or resist weapon attacks with Haki-reinforced strikes. 150 254
- Uses Haki to break Nico Robin's restraining arms before they can fully immobilize him. 154
Ryuo
Ace's Ryuo is an advanced Armament Haki application that projects force beyond the point of impact and can penetrate defenses.
- Forced Garp back half a step with a full-force Ryuo punch. 134
- Shattered Stone Face's hardened “Iron Fist” through projected Haki. 254
- Bypasses Marco's flames to strike the body beneath and disrupt his regeneration. 233
- Channels Ryuo through his flames and iron pipe, enabling attacks that damage Haki-coated weapons and armor from within. 366
Conqueror's Haki
Ace possesses Conqueror's Haki, which first manifests uncontrollably during a crisis.
- Awakens it while refusing to let Garino harm his brothers. 44
- Its initial release is powerful but uncontrolled, forcing stronger fighters to keep their distance. 44 100
- Later uses Conqueror's Haki in conjunction with Ryuo to suppress Marco's Phoenix flames. 233
Fire-Generating Techniques
Ace has not eaten the Flame-Flame Fruit. His flames are produced through his physique, explosive arm movements, friction, and high-level Haki. 355
- Friction Flame — Creates bright yellow flames through high-speed movement and Armament Haki. 101 102
- Fire Fist — Combines flames and Ryuo into a powerful direct strike; used against Kaido's scales and Bard. 347 366
- Great Flame Commandment — Produces large-scale flames through rapid arm movement and Haki collision, overpowering Smoothie's water-based attack. 355
- Compressed Flame — Condenses fire into white or deep-blue forms inside Ryuo for greater penetration and destructive power. 366 367
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Iron pipe — Ace's primary weapon; frequently coated in Armament Haki and Ryuo. 150 247

- Seastone handcuffs — Used by Eclipse drones to restrain Bard after Ace and Sabo force his surrender. 367
Relationships
- Kahn — Twin brother, mentor, and Ace's greatest source of rivalry. Ace trains obsessively to defeat him, but also recognizes Kahn's authority and protection. 4 10 102
- Portgas D. Rouge — Mother; died after giving birth to Ace and Kahn following her twenty-month pregnancy. Her sacrifice becomes central to Ace's acceptance of his own life. 1 122
- Gol D. Roger — Biological father. Ace initially resents Roger's shadow, then learns that Roger had hoped to name his son Ace and had looked toward the East Blue before his execution. 112 126
- Monkey D. Garp — Guardian and harsh trainer. Garp pushes Ace physically from childhood and later acknowledges that Ace has reached the threshold of the New World. 5 6 134
- Sabo — Brother, closest combat partner, and emotional anchor. Sabo helps Ace confront his Ryuo mental block, and the two coordinate effectively in battle. 121 122 367
- Monkey D. Luffy — Brother and frequent sparring partner. Ace is protective of Luffy, though he often scolds him for recklessness. 119 178 243
- Silvers Rayleigh — Haki mentor who reveals the truth about Roger and Rouge, gives Ace Roger's flag fragment, and guides him into Ryuo. 119 125 126
- Tony Stark — Eclipse ally and training companion. Tony monitors Ace's combat data and develops technology used during his Haki training. 116 125
- Garino — Eclipse officer who tries to stop Ace from leaving East Blue and later manages affairs around the brothers. 100 101
