Squelch!
When Gwen turned around, she saw the Lizard's claws pierce straight through the chest of the secretary, Saji, without any resistance.
Saji's face was frozen in terror. Even when the Lizard tossed her to the ground like garbage, her eyes remained wide open, as if she couldn't believe she had died just like that!
Gwen stared blankly at it all, her mind completely empty.
As a young girl with an overwhelming sense of justice, she instinctively blamed Saji's death on her own helplessness.
If I'd been more careful, if I'd noticed the cars on the bridge right away... I could have saved both of them!
But now... looking at Saji's unclosed eyes, guilt rose uncontrollably in Gwen's heart.
She felt that she had gotten Saji killed.
Realizing this, Gwen recklessly charged forward, trying to keep the lizard monster from escaping in order to make up for her mistake...
"At the very least, the murderer has to be brought to justice!"
With that thought in mind, she slammed headfirst into the lizard monster.
Her rage did indeed increase her strength. She knocked the Lizard, whose serum was already beginning to wear off, to the ground and straddled him, throwing punch after punch.
Her fists smashed into the Lizard's face again and again, beating even the highly durable Lizard until his face was a bloody mess.
But that was all!
While rage enhanced Gwen's strength, it also temporarily disabled her Spider-Sense.
The Lizard seized the opportunity and wrapped Gwen up with his tail, then slashed at her abdomen with his claws.
Luckily, the instant his claws swung out, they already showed faint signs of collapsing.
Otherwise, if that slash had landed solidly, Gwen would have been disemboweled for sure.
Watching his sturdy, powerful right arm crumble apart bit by bit, the lizard creature looked as if he had seen the most terrifying thing in the world.
After one final glance at Gwen, whom he had violently slammed to the ground, and at the armed helicopters circling overhead, he did not dare linger any longer. He immediately climbed onto the bridge's steel beams and swiftly vanished from the scene.
Gwen unwillingly climbed to her feet. She had wanted to continue chasing the lizard monster.
But the distance between them was simply too great, and faint police sirens were approaching from behind.
Thinking of what had happened at noon, Gwen gradually calmed down. She did not dare stay any longer and could only clutch her relentlessly bleeding lower abdomen as she swung away on webbing...
Osborn!
As he watched his completely ruined right arm, Connors, gradually reverting from a lizard creature back into a human, could not help but think of that name.
He had to return to Osborn Tower and inject himself with more serum. And besides...
He wanted revenge! He wanted Norman Osborn, who regarded human lives as worthless, to pay the price!
Crash!
The Lizard smashed through the glass curtain wall on the lower floor of Osborn Tower. Every employee and security guard in his path was torn apart by his claws.
He staggered toward his laboratory, completely failing to notice that outside the window, a monster clad in dark green metal armor and standing atop a Flying Skateboard was silently watching him.
"Kurt Connors?"
The Green Goblin—or rather, Norman Osborn—spread his lips into an exaggerated grin, his eyes gleaming with excitement and curiosity.
"It seems my 'backup plan' succeeded too... or perhaps it failed?"
"Yee-hah!"
Just as Connors, in his half-human, half-lizard state, was about to reach for the Lizard Serum, the Green Goblin let out a strange cry in midair and instantly dove down.
The Green Goblin Glider effortlessly smashed through the glass curtain wall and, at incredible speed, snatched an entire case of Lizard Serum into his hands!
Seeing his "hope" stolen away, Doctor Connors, whose mental state was extremely unstable, roared and reached out to grab the Green Goblin in the air.
But by now, most of the serum's effects had faded. He had even shrunk back to a normal human height, so how could he possibly catch the Green Goblin as he darted rapidly through the air?
After all that struggle, he failed to catch even a hair of the Green Goblin, and instead ended up covered in wounds from the Green Goblin's darts.
"Oh, poor Connors! Just look at you, so pathetic~"
Seeing that the lizard scales on Connors's body were about to fade away completely.
He quickly guided the glider down and injected Connors with a third of a tube of serum.
In his view, this was the most suitable state—neither as indecisive as usual nor too berserk to communicate with.
After administering the serum, the Green Goblin jumped from the glider and removed the Green Goblin helmet from his face.
"Osborn?" Connors looked at the Green Goblin and let out a low growl.
"Oh, I'm so glad you still recognize me~"
The Green Goblin looked down at Connors from above, his tone brimming with mockery.
"However, Norman Osborn is dead. From now on, you should call me... the Green Goblin!"
"You! Must! Die!" Connors, half-human and half-lizard, let out a piercing roar.
But the Green Goblin paid him no heed. He merely circled Connors, analyzing him as he spoke.
"Unstable... It appears your genetic chain, like mine, is on the verge of collapse."
The Green Goblin instantly concluded that the Lizard Serum was a failure, inferior even to his Physical Enhancement Serum.
At least he was still clear-minded—the Green Goblin believed he had already killed off the weak personality—while what Connors had created was nothing but a monster incapable of controlling himself.
He needed a real cure!
One that would let him retain his power while perfectly stabilizing his genes, allowing him, Harry, and all their descendants to forever escape the Osborn family's hereditary disease!
To achieve that...
A name swiftly surfaced in his mind—Peter Parker!
Because Connors's report had detailed how Peter had helped him complete the Decay-Rate Algorithm.
The Green Goblin became convinced that Peter—or rather, something among the relics left behind by Peter's parents—held the key to saving the Osborn family!
Yes! It had to be him!
In the blink of an eye, a mad plan took shape in the Green Goblin's mind:
"Listen up, you pathetic worm!"
Ignoring Connors's racket, the Green Goblin shouted in an intensely stirring tone.
"We aren't enemies! Now, we are the same kind! We are both... superior beings abandoned by this world!"
The Green Goblin walked to the floor-to-ceiling window and gazed at the bustling traffic outside with a sigh.
"Look at them! Those fragile, foolish, lowly humans! We should rule and enslave those inferior beings, even transform them bit by bit into our brothers!"
As he listened to the Green Goblin, a thoughtful look unconsciously appeared in the Lizard's eyes.
Building a kingdom filled entirely with lizard people... didn't sound so bad!
"What do you want?" he could not help asking.
At those words, the Green Goblin's lips curled up again.
"We must find Peter Parker immediately! That boy will be the key to opening a new world for us!"
