Background and History
Gwen grew up as Peter Parker's next-door neighbor and childhood sweetheart. She is the daughter of New York City's police commissioner, George Stacy, and was raised by George and her grandmother Pauline after her mother died early. George trained her physically from childhood, leaving her a standout school athlete before she gained powers. 1 4
During a school visit to Osborn Tower, Gwen—not Peter—was bitten by a genetically modified spider. After recovering from the incident, she discovered superhuman strength, agility, and spider-like movement, initially struggling to control them and losing sleep while testing her new abilities. 1 4 6
Seeing repeated robberies and assaults while traveling home convinced Gwen to act. Inspired by George's work protecting New York, she decided that her abilities obligated her to do more. She designed web-shooters and completed her first black-and-white Ghost Spider suit within a day. 11 14 20
Her early career was marked by enthusiasm but limited combat experience. Shocker overwhelmed her with invisible shockwaves, while the Lizard seriously injured her on Manhattan Bridge. Gwen nevertheless prioritized civilians, abandoning the fight with Lizard to save a child from a falling car. 23 31 33
After Peter revealed himself as the Arbiter, he trained Gwen in rooftop sparring sessions. Her rapid improvement let her challenge the Sinister Six and establish herself as more than a neighborhood vigilante. 66 81 83 87
Appearance
Gwen is a tall blonde young woman with fair skin, blue eyes, and golden hair, later described as wearing a short golden bob. 1 276
- Her original Ghost Spider costume is a black-and-white bodysuit with web-shooters and emerald-green ballet shoes. 20
- Her symbiote suit manifests as a black-and-white battle suit. 128
- Tony Stark later provides her with blue-and-silver nanotech Vibranium Armor. 216
- As Sorcerer Supreme, she wears sorcerous attire and uses a Sling Ring and the Cloak of Levitation. 413 449
Personality
Gwen is compassionate, idealistic, and intensely protective of civilians. Her instinct in a crisis is to save people first, even when doing so places her at a tactical disadvantage. Her early refusal to use lethal force nearly cost her life against the Sinister Six, but it remained central to her approach as a hero. 31 92
At the start of her career, Gwen also craves recognition for her heroic work and is easily flustered when Peter teases her. She becomes more resilient through defeats and training, developing confidence without losing her warmth or concern for others. 21 23 83
Gwen does not want to exist as Peter's accessory. When Peter is away from Earth, she refuses to call him for a rescue and instead leads the Avengers in responding to an international attempt to frame them. 302
Abilities & Skills
Spider Physiology
A radioactive spider altered Gwen's body, granting her superhuman physical abilities and Spider-Sense. 1 4 23

Hand-to-Hand Combat
Peter's repeated sparring sessions transform Gwen from an inexperienced fighter into a skilled close-quarters combatant. 81 83

- Generates golden energy webbing that can alter shape and movement at her command. 319
- Immobilized more than thirty Super-Skrull Soldiers by piercing their joints with golden web strands, then binding them together for Sif's follow-up attack. 320

Gwen displays exceptional natural magical talent and becomes the Ancient One's disciple and successor. 412 413
