Background / History
The Void Realm is an immensely vast dimensional world containing innumerable planes, races, and civilizations. Although it lacks conventional time, space, and elemental energy, it is pervaded by Rule Power, which sustains its operation and permits Supreme Existences to wield extraordinary strength 479 789.
In an ancient era so distant that later civilizations retained no records of it, the Void Realm was dominated by the Thirty-Six Emperors. Their era ended in a catastrophic war against the Remnant Clan, a civilization later revealed to have been deliberately created by the Void Realm to restore balance among increasingly powerful alien civilizations 808 842 971.
The Void Realm’s governing rules operate to preserve balance rather than from conscious intent. Its Rule Origin is described as functioning like a simple program, maintaining order throughout every region and plane connected to it 971 976.
Characteristics
- The Void Realm has no external elemental energy; Spellcasters can only use their internal magic power and must replenish it with Elemental Crystals or other resources 479 480.
- Conventional spatial traversal is impossible within it. Even Supreme Existences must travel by flight, warships, or specialized spellcasting tools 921.
- Planes appear as mist-shrouded masses protected by their own plane power; sufficiently powerful Spellcasters can break through this protection to enter them 556.
- The Dark Region is a vast, lightless area within the Void Realm where perception and sensitivity to Rule Power are suppressed. It contains no planes and can leave even Supreme Existences permanently lost 966.
- The Void Realm is far larger than Spellcaster Civilization’s known territory; even powerful civilizations occupy only a small part of it 570 958.
Abilities & Functions
Rule Power
Rule Power fills the Void Realm and connects its planes, living beings, and fundamental order to the Rule Origin 954 976.
- It governs phenomena including weather, rivers, mountains, forests, and the fundamental order of distant planes 976.
- Supreme Existences draw upon it to determine their strength and rank 936 964.
- Living beings born within the Void Realm become increasingly bound to it as they merge with its rules 954.
- The Void Realm can reclaim the power of deceased beings that originated from it, increasing its own strength 978.
Rule Origin
The Rule Origin is the Void Realm’s true core and the source of its Rule Power. Its location shifts through the Void Realm rather than remaining fixed 973 976.
- It is not a single condensed sphere, but a boundless expanse of highly condensed Rule Power 976.
- Every strand of Rule Power within it maintains part of the Void Realm’s order 976.
- Damage to a cluster of Rule Power causes disorder in the region or planes it governs 976.
- It can form a Rule Gate, a passage leading toward its core 975 991.
- Emperor-tier beings can become incarnations of the Rule Origin and retain immense power even when their connection to it is weakened 975.
Balance and World Rejection
The Void Realm instinctively opposes forces that destroy its order or threaten its balance 971 976.
- It created the Remnant Clan as a balancing force, then rejected it once the civilization became a source of destructive imbalance 971.
- Merlin’s perfected Illusory World is treated as a greater threat because its separate rules disrupt the Void Realm’s order whenever it is used 964 976.
- Its rejection causes other beings to instinctively despise and oppose the rejected target 964 965.
- The Void Realm’s Rule Origin directly attacked Merlin’s Illusory World after recognizing it as a threat 933 964.
World Will and Self-Destruction
Though the Rule Origin normally lacks consciousness, the Void Realm can awaken a broader world will when faced with extreme danger 976 994.
- The awakened will can draw Rule Power back into the Rule Origin by destroying regions of the Void Realm itself 994.
- During its conflict with Merlin, it escalated this self-destruction until nearly ninety percent of its power was gathered against him 994.
- Unable to destroy Merlin’s stable Illusory World, it expelled him from the Void Realm and sealed itself against his return 994 995.
Story Role / Major Arcs
- Merlin’s exile from the Land of Glory — Archmage Fidel’s one-way spacetime passage sends Merlin and Didimos into the Void Realm. They learn that returning requires at least Archmage-level strength 479.
- Exploration of planes and civilizations — Merlin discovers that the Void Realm contains countless foreign races, planes, and civilizations beyond Spellcaster Civilization 556 570 622.
- Ancient-history revelations — The Purple Emperor’s inheritance reveals the ancient Thirty-Six Emperors and their war against the Remnant Clan 808.
- Conflict with the Rule Origin — Merlin’s Illusory World matures into a separate rule system capable of suppressing Void Realm Rule Power, prompting the Void Realm to reject him 963 964.
- Journey to the core — Merlin enters the Rule Gate and learns that the Rule Origin maintains the order of all regions of the Void Realm 975 976.
- World collision and expulsion — Merlin confronts the Rule Origin directly. The Void Realm self-destructs on a massive scale, then ejects him into the darkness outside dimensional worlds 993 994 995.
Trivia
- The Void Realm was originally introduced to Merlin as a “natural graveyard for Spellcasters” because it contains no elements and offers no natural means of replenishing magic power 479.
- Orumba explains that a dimensional world can be regarded as another vast realm comparable to the Void Realm; according to him, countless such dimensional worlds exist 783.
- From outside, the Void Realm appears as an enormous glowing source of light despite seeming endless from within 995.
