Background / History
Norman Osborn suffered from a hereditary disease and feared both an early death and passing the condition to his son, Harry. Desperate for a cure, he used an untested human-enhancement drug after Oscorp's animal-serum experiments failed to deliver the expected result. The drug turned his skin green and amplified his negative emotions until the Green Goblin persona overwhelmed Norman's original personality. 41
As the Green Goblin, Osborn adopted a goblin identity, armed himself with a combat glider and explosives, and sought to claim New York's criminal underworld. He began his campaign by bombing an Oscorp board meeting and murdering directors who had tried to remove him. 41
Appearance
The Green Goblin is a green-skinned altered human who conceals his identity behind an elaborate goblin-themed costume and mask. 41
- Green skin caused by the enhancement drug. 41
- Goblin mask and costume, described as visually grotesque by Chen Xi. 41
- Armored combat gear capable of withstanding conventional gunfire. 44 51
- Uses a signature airborne glider. 41
Personality
The Green Goblin is sadistic, theatrical, and obsessed with demonstrating the helplessness of heroes. When physically outmatched, he targets civilians, takes hostages, and creates impossible rescue scenarios to force opponents into moral compromises. 45 46
He also sees himself as a philosopher rather than merely a murderer. He argues that the public ultimately hates its heroes and that exceptional people should rule over ordinary people, using these beliefs to try to recruit Spider-Man. 43
His resentment is rooted in his illness and in envy of those born with power. After Chen Xi defeats him, he protests that his crimes began as a struggle to survive while others were born naturally powerful. 47
Abilities & Skills
Enhanced Physiology
The untested enhancement drug grants the Green Goblin superhuman physical capabilities and durability, though it also destroys his sanity. 41
- His strength is approximately comparable to Spider-@@REF_ENTITY_16086255@@'s, though her agility is superior. 45
- He withstands conventional gunfire that cannot harm him. 44
- He can engage Spider-Man and Spider-@@REF_ENTITY_16086255@@ in direct combat. 41 45
- His enhanced body and armor are ineffective against Chen Xi's overwhelming attacks. 51
Aerial Combat
The Green Goblin fights from a high-speed glider, using mobility to dictate the battlefield and evade pursuers. 41 46
- Escaped Spider-Man after Parker damaged the glider's left-wing engine. 41
- Used the glider to pursue and manipulate Spider-@@REF_ENTITY_16086255@@ across New York and onto the Brooklyn Bridge. 46
- Lost a major tactical advantage when Chen Xi crushed the glider with one hand. 47
Psychological Manipulation
Rather than relying solely on force, the Green Goblin exploits heroic ideals and public opinion.
- Captured Spider-Man with an anesthetic spray, then attempted to persuade him to abandon heroism and join him. 43
- Framed Spider-Man after the Daily Bugle attack, contributing to Parker becoming a nationally wanted criminal. 44
- Exploited Spider-@@REF_ENTITY_16086255@@'s compulsion to save civilians by attacking crowds and staging hostage dilemmas. 45 46
- Attempted to force masked heroes to reveal their identities by threatening bomb detonations across New York. 50 51
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Goblin Glider — armed flying platform equipped with missiles, rockets, and spinning blades. 41 45 47
- Pumpkin Bombs — explosive weapons used against Oscorp directors, Spider-Man, and New York civilians. 41 44
- Miniature missiles — fired from the glider; several killed civilians after Chen Xi avoided them. 47
- Anesthetic spray — incapacitated Spider-Man during the Daily Bugle attack. 43
- Heartbeat-linked bombs — explosives prepared across New York, programmed to detonate after his heart stopped. 51
Relationships
- Harry Osborn — his son; Norman's fear that Harry would inherit the family's disease helped drive him to take the experimental drug. 41
- Peter Parker / Spider-Man — primary enemy and intended recruit. The Green Goblin captured Parker, argued that heroes are hated by the public, and tried to make him his ally. 43 44
- Gwen Stacy / Spider-@@REF_ENTITY_16086255@@ — adversary whom he physically could not overcome outright; he instead weaponized civilian lives and hostage situations against her. 45 46
- Chen Xi — overwhelming adversary. Chen Xi repeatedly allowed the Goblin to continue operating, then killed him after refusing his bomb-based blackmail. 41 51
- George Stacy — police commissioner forced to negotiate and stall while the Goblin publicly demanded the masked heroes reveal themselves. 50
Story Role / Major Arcs
Rise and Conflict with Spider-Man
The Green Goblin begins his public campaign by murdering Oscorp directors and attacking Mary Jane, drawing Spider-Man into battle. Parker damages his glider and forces him to retreat, while Chen Xi deliberately prevents Jean Grey from stopping him because the Goblin still has a “useful role to play.” 41
He later raids the Daily Bugle in search of Spider-Man's identity, captures Parker with anesthetic spray, and tries to convert him through ideological manipulation. His attack successfully damages Spider-Man's public reputation and pushes Parker into despair. 43 44
Terror Campaign Against Spider-Gwen
After Spider-Man temporarily withdraws, the Green Goblin launches indiscriminate attacks across Manhattan to force him back into action. He defeats S.H.I.E.L.D.'s deployed agents and shoots down military helicopters, while Chen Xi delays intervention to increase the system reward for killing him. 44 45
Spider-@@REF_ENTITY_16086255@@ confronts him and initially dominates their fight. Unable to win directly, the Goblin missiles civilians, then leads her to Brooklyn Bridge and forces her to choose between rescuing a kidnapped girl and stopping a sightseeing train from derailing. 45 46
Chen Xi saves the train, defeats the Goblin, destroys his glider, and leaves the injured villain for Gwen to execute. Gwen refuses to kill him, and Chen Xi ultimately lets Osborn be taken into the legal system. 47 48
Release and Death
Osborn's lawyers successfully portray him as a mentally ill victim of self-experimentation. He is acquitted and transferred to a luxurious psychiatric hospital, from which he soon announces his recovery. 48
He returns to New York, publicly demands that Spider-Man, Spider-@@REF_ENTITY_16086255@@, and Chen Xi reveal their identities, and threatens a citywide “fireworks” attack. When Chen Xi attacks, Osborn reveals that bombs are tied to his heartbeat and attempts to force Chen Xi to unmask. 50 51
Chen Xi refuses the ultimatum, destroys the Green Goblin's heart with a punch, and triggers the bombs. The ensuing explosions kill more than a thousand people across New York. 51 52
Dark Avengers Appearance
Despite his documented death, Norman Osborn later appears as the leader of the Dark Avengers during their attack on Asgard. Chen Xi confronts him, copies and surpasses his abilities, and Norman is removed from the battlefield by another Dark Avenger. 141
