Background / History
Mutant School
Jean serves at Mutant School under Professor Charles Xavier. During the investigation into Pyro John's disappearance, Charles assigns her to trace John's movements; she later discovers his conflict with Chen Xi and confronts Chen Xi over John's presumed death. 22 27
Although initially seeking to test Chen Xi and hold him accountable, Jean becomes drawn to his confidence and his knowledge of possible futures. Chen Xi tells her that the X-Men's current course ends with mutant extinction, Charles going mad, Logan growing old, and Jean becoming a “Cosmic Nebula,” echoing fragments she has seen in dreams. 27 28
Relationship with Chen Xi
Jean and Chen Xi grow close through private drives, dinners, and conversations about the future of mutants. She finds relief from the responsibilities of Mutant School in his presence and eventually confesses her attraction to him after witnessing his defeat of Red Hulk. 27 30
Upon returning to Mutant School, Jean publicly rejects Cyclops' claim that they are a couple and identifies herself as Chen Xi's girlfriend. She later supports Chen Xi's fabricated account of Pyro John's death before Charles and Hank. 31 33 34
Mutant Rights Crisis
The proposed Mutant Registration Act leaves Jean exhausted and distressed, as she believes mutants are being treated “like beasts.” Chen Xi promises to help her cause, and the two discuss more forceful ways to secure mutant survival. 40 49
Jean is kept away from Mutant School by Chen Xi during the escalating mutant conflict because he fears that her emotional instability could unleash the Phoenix Force. When Sentinels begin massacring mutants, she briefly loses control upon seeing footage of the killings before Charles brings her back to herself. 67 73
Phoenix Awakening and Later Activities
Jean senses the awakening of Apocalypse and seeks Charles after being unable to contact Chen Xi. 82 During Apocalypse's slaughter, Chen Xi urges her to stop rejecting her power; Jean answers the cries of the victims by fully manifesting the Phoenix Force. 85
She later trains alongside Wanda and Gwen in preparation for threats posed by the Norse gods, joins Chen Xi in eliminating Ogres and mutant collaborators who prey on human villages, and investigates Odin's intentions on Chen Xi's behalf. 97 111 135
Jean welcomes Jane Foster into Chen Xi's home and begins helping her practice control over her newly acquired abilities. 137
