Background / History
Lin Muyao entered the Hero Association as a rookie magical girl under the identifier Sunflower, but personally changed her codename to Nightingale. Her magic was recognized from the outset as defense-oriented, and she became part of the squad formed around Hyacinth and Iris. 70 71
Her first major battle came at Autumn Splendor Road, where Hyacinth, Iris, and Nightingale confronted Heartmoon Fox and Hellcat. Nightingale protected Iris with shields during the fight, but Hellcat defeated her with a single punch after the squad's frontline collapsed. Heartmoon Fox then pulled the three girls into a Mindscape, healed Nightingale's injuries, and treated her as a dress-up doll rather than tormenting her like the others—an experience that left Nightingale deeply unsettled. 72
After escaping, she retained the elegant outfit Heartmoon Fox had selected for her by reproducing it with transformation magic. She trained under Bailing alongside Hyacinth and Iris, studying simultaneous spellcasting, Magic Cannon combinations, Magic Missile weaving, and shielding while attacking. 79 100
Nightingale initially worried that her support-focused abilities made her the squad's weak point, especially when she repeatedly became a target in battle. She later accepted Alice's request for sparring as part of her own training plan. 147 350
Over time, she developed into the Hyacinth Squad's principal planner. She uses her position near Iris to observe the entire field, direct artillery support, identify threats to teammates, and coordinate defensive responses. 525 631
Her tactical growth became particularly visible during the missing-persons investigation: she devised the plan for Hyacinth to act as bait, prepared and catalogued Heartmoon Fox's props, maintained communications after Hyacinth vanished, and directed Hyacinth's extraction of a civilian from the alternate space. 693 695 696 702
Appearance
Nightingale is a pale-yellow magical girl who carries a wand and originally transformed in a lively, cute short-skirted outfit. 70 79
- Her preferred later attire is a light ruffled dress chosen by Heartmoon Fox, paired with yellow-and-white over-the-knee socks, puffed sleeves, and shortened gloves. 79
- She can alter her magical attire with transformation magic. 79
- In a Mindscape fantasy-roleplaying scenario, she appeared as an elf bard with a stringed instrument. 436
Personality
Nightingale was initially nervous and easily intimidated by Heartmoon Fox's overwhelming power, but she consistently chose to shield Iris and remain beside her teammates rather than flee. 72 147
She is observant, methodical, and highly competitive. Rather than relying on Hyacinth's direct combat strength, she assesses the situation, prepares contingencies, and finds indirect ways to win; this includes stockpiling items during a race, grinding one hundred reconstruction commissions in four days, and designing an ambitious restoration project to secure a contest victory. 620 624 625 527
Despite her responsible battlefield role, Nightingale is an enthusiastic Heartmoon Fox fan and enjoys the villain group's games, merchandise, and Mindscapes. Her eagerness to participate in villain activities has even made Hyacinth and Iris wonder whether she might defect. 420 620 656
Abilities & Skills
Defensive Magic
Nightingale's primary specialty is creating Magic Shields for herself and her allies.
- Can rapidly recast and layer shields during combat. 72 100
- Uses shields to intercept attacks aimed at allies, including Iris. 72 122
- Can protect multiple teammates while maintaining a broad view of the battlefield. 147 631
- Her shields consume magic dynamically according to the force of the incoming attack; sustained high-output Magic Cannon fire can quickly exhaust her mana. 122
- Her hastily formed shield was shattered by Cheshire Rabbit's hammer strike. 147
Healing Magic
Nightingale can heal injuries sustained by allies.
- Healed Hyacinth's shoulder bruise during a battle against witches. 206
- Her healing restored the visible injury quickly, though the context does not establish her limits for severe wounds. 206
Support Casting and Tactical Command
Nightingale combines defensive magic with battlefield awareness, information management, and coordination.
- Her support position gives her a wide field of view without obstructing Iris's firing line. 631
- Directs Iris's artillery fire and rapidly identifies where support magic is needed. 525 631
- Coordinates communications and rescue instructions under pressure, including Hyacinth's evacuation of a civilian through a hostile alternate space. 696 702
- Understands practical magical principles such as the requirements for maintaining a stable barrier. 498
- Can follow advanced magical discussions better than most of her peers, though she admits she cannot fully understand complex theoretical concepts due to her limited field experience. 706 713
Offensive Spellcasting
Although primarily a support type, Nightingale has trained to contribute offensive pressure.
- Practiced firing Magic Cannons, weaving Magic Missiles between shots, and casting shields while attacking. 100
- Uses Mana Burst as a self-defense option. 252
- Mana Burst has very short effective range: beyond roughly two meters, it has little stopping power; even at point-blank range, it is chiefly reliable for knocking an enemy back. 252
Flight Magic
Nightingale is an accomplished flier with strong patience and race awareness.
- Deliberately dropped to the rear of an item race to collect powerful low-ranking items, then used them for a final-lap comeback. 624 625
- Won the race by 0.01 seconds over Shuo Ye after accelerating at full power during the final sprint. 626
- Her flight technique and tactical planning were considered the decisive factors in her victory. 626
Construction Magic
Nightingale can use construction magic creatively and direct large-scale restoration work.
- Led Fenrir in planning their Music Plaza restoration zone. 525
- Won the restoration contest with Fenrir through their completed Goddess of Music statue and broader plaza design. 527
Roleplaying and Persuasion
Within Heartmoon Fox's fantasy Mindscape games, Nightingale plays a bard.
- Used Bardic Inspiration and a successful Persuasion check to convince a great druid to join the party against the Undead Legion. 533
- Regularly proposes reconnaissance, deception, and information-gathering plans during the group's adventures. 439 534
