The next day, when Xia Che opened the door, the first thing he saw was two wooden crates stacked on top of each other.
A raincloth was tied over the crates, bedding was piled atop the raincloth, and a long wooden case was wedged beside them. The little cart was packed to the brim. The young temple attendant pushing it could only show half his head from behind the handles.
"You're going back to Nuoding today?" Xia Che asked.
"West Gate," Su Yuntao replied.
Xia Che looked at the cart, then at him.
"Which empire are you taking the long way around?"
The young temple attendant finally could not hold it in any longer and burst out laughing while gripping the cart handles.
Su Yuntao looked a little embarrassed. "We had to see how much the cart could carry, so we wouldn't discover it all wouldn't fit when we actually set out."
"You've seen it already." Xia Che lifted the top layer of bedding. "You can unload it now."
Chatot flew out from the window and landed on the highest crate. It lowered its head to inspect the new cart. Its tail feathers brushed the raincloth as it moved, and it sidestepped twice.
Su Yuntao immediately rolled the raincloth farther inward.
But the moment he moved it, the waterskin beneath slid out.
The young temple attendant hurriedly caught it. Another companion carrying documents came around from the back of the cart and steadied the tilted crate. They fussed over it for quite a while, while Chatot found the whole thing amusing and hopped along the crate edges.
"If you load it like this, you'll need three people to hold it up the whole way." Hu Liena came out of the shop with Eevee and happened to witness the entire scene.
