Background and History

Xu Tianchen's awakening

Xu Chengjing is the father of Xu Tianchen and Xu Tianran. During Tianchen's martial-soul awakening, he recognizes that Tianchen's Purple Radiance Annihilating Heaven Dragon possesses a stronger destruction attribute than Tianran's. 1

He immediately orders the family to conceal Tianchen's twin martial souls and Ultimate Martial Soul, publicly revealing only Innate Full Soul Power and the Purple Radiance Annihilating Heaven Dragon. He believes that his military achievements, ties to ministers, and status as Purple Radiance King have already made Emperor Xu Chengjin wary of him; Tianchen's full potential could provoke domestic enemies into targeting the family. 2

Xu Chengjing refuses to let Tianchen devote himself to soul guidance-device study, judging cultivation to be more important for an Ultimate Martial Soul user. He instead arranges for Long Xiaoyao and Ye Xishui to guide Tianchen, despite Kong Deming's initial opposition to their status as Evil Soul Masters. 2 8

Plotting the coup

Xu Chengjing secretly gathers senior soul engineers, military commanders, Kong Deming, Jing Hongchen, Ye Xishui, and other influential supporters to prepare a coup against his brother. His support includes the Consecration Hall, Virtue Hall, the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Legion, Imperial Dragon Soul Engineer Legion, Terrorclaw Soul Engineer Legion, and Fire Phoenix Soul Engineer Legion. 16 17

Although he originally intended to wait another eight or nine years, Xu Chengjing moves the coup forward because Tianchen's extraordinary talent makes him fear that the royalist faction will act against his son. He deliberately ensures Tianchen is away with Long Xiaoyao hunting a Spirit Ring, so the boy remains safe even if the coup fails. 17 31

Seizure of the throne

Xu Chengjing launches his coup during Crown Prince Xu He's hundred-day banquet, using explosions and coordinated legion deployments to isolate the imperial palace. 20

In the imperial hall, he presents a black-gold “secret edict” that he claims authorizes him to depose an emperor who weakens the empire or abandons its goal of continental unification. Xu Chengjin denounces the document as forged. 21

He publicly destroys resistance by having Butler Zhao execute the dissenting official Hou Anshen and by allowing Ye Xishui to eliminate Xu Chengjin's three loyal Rank-9 Soul Engineers. 21

Xu Chengjin detonates a Rank-8 Fixed-Mounted Soul Guidance Bomb in a final attempt to prevent Xu Chengjing from taking the throne. Xu Chengjing survives unharmed by revealing his eight-ring cultivation and activating a Rank-9 defensive soul tool; Xu Chengjin later dies from his injuries. 22

Following the destruction of the old palace hall, Chen Songting and the surviving ministers petition Xu Chengjing to ascend the throne. He accepts, establishes the era name Jinghe, and declares his intention to unify the Douluo Continent under the Sun Moon Empire. 22

Reign

Kong Deming formally crowns Xu Chengjing Emperor during a grand coronation attended by representatives of the Three Douluo Kingdoms and Shrek Academy. 32

As emperor, Xu Chengjing takes additional consorts and fathers the Third Prince, Fourth Prince, and Princess Xu Tianzhen, while leaving the empress position vacant and posthumously honoring Xu Tianchen and Xu Tianran's birth mother as empress. 35

He publicly rewards Xu Tianchen and the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy after their victory over Shrek Academy in the Continental Advanced Spirit Master Academy Soul Fighting Tournament. The champion team receives gold, Rank-8 triggered defensive soul tools, state funding toward Rank-9 Soul Engineer advancement, and the tournament spoils. 90

Xu Chengjing later brings Tianchen into the imperial ancestral hall and reveals the secret origin of the Sun Moon Empire's inherited Sun, Silver Moon, and Purple Radiance Annihilating Heaven Dragon martial souls. He entrusts Tianchen with a dark-purple Dragon-Scale Divine Artifact, which resonates with Tianchen's martial soul. 91

Xu Chengjing presents himself in ceremonial and imperial attire befitting his status, shifting from a prince's authority to the overt majesty of an emperor after his coronation. 31 32

Personality

Xu Chengjing is ambitious, calculating, and intensely committed to the Sun Moon Empire's expansion. He considers Emperor Xu Chengjin too weak to protect the empire and regards continental unification as both his duty and rightful destiny. 17 22

His paternal concern for Xu Tianchen is genuine, but it is inseparable from political calculation. He hides Tianchen's talent to prevent assassination attempts, accelerates his coup to secure Tianchen's future, and eagerly seeks powerful mentors and resources for him. 2 17 31

He is pragmatic about allies and morality. He negotiates with Long Xiaoyao and Ye Xishui despite their ties to the Holy Spirit Cult, insisting that they need his cooperation more than he needs theirs. 7

Xu Chengjing is also adept at concealing personal desire behind imperial composure. When the Rakshasa Scythe rejects him and the Dragon-Scale Divine Artifact later chooses Tianchen over him, he suppresses his disappointment and outwardly permits Tianchen to retain both opportunities. 78 105
