Background / History
Shen Yan awakens after transmigrating into a novel as its original minor villain. He knows that the original Shen Yan was obsessed with Lu Xingchuan, was used by Lu and Xie Li, suffered severe online abuse after the show, and ultimately died by suicide. Determined not to repeat that fate, he abandons the original’s submissive behavior from the moment he arrives. 1 8
Before the transmigration, Shen Yan spent three years supporting Lu Xingchuan’s career while Lu publicly denied their relationship. He lent Lu two million yuan during a family crisis and attended drinking engagements to secure industry opportunities for him. During the casting of Fragrant Years, a casting director drugged Shen Yan and attempted to assault him; Shen escaped, preserved a recording, and used it to help Lu obtain the male lead role that later made him Best Actor. 1 28 30
When Lu tries to end their engagement after Xie Li’s return, Shen Yan demands repayment rather than pleading. He uses recordings, screenshots, and public posts to force Lu to transfer four million yuan, then gains another two million through further leverage. He uses the six million yuan to buy a villa. 1 3
On This Is a Dating Show, Shen Yan rejects his assigned role as Xie Li’s disposable contrast. His bluntness, escalating conflict with Lu, and unexpected partnership with Pei Heng gradually reverse his hostile public reputation. 2 16 17
A leaked hotel video later frames Shen Yan as having obtained resources through misconduct. He counters by livestreaming the complete evidence of the casting director’s attempted assault and Lu’s cruelty, exposing the circumstances behind Fragrant Years. When his agent admits to releasing the video, Shen Yan demands and receives two million yuan in compensation. 28 29 30 31
Appearance
Shen Yan is a tall, athletic man with fair skin, red lips, and expressive features that frequently make him appear deceptively innocent after causing trouble. He is over six feet tall and physically agile enough to climb drainage pipes, scale rooftops, and evade pursuers. 16 18 24 38
- Height: Over six feet tall. 18
- Build: Athletic and strong enough to restrain Lu Xingchuan during several confrontations. 35
- Features: Fair skin, red lips, and often-mussed or “fluffy” hair. 16 22
- Style: Later appears in matching outfits with Pei Heng after changing out of soaked clothes. 45
Personality
Shen Yan is sarcastic, opportunistic, combative, and unusually resistant to emotional pressure. Unlike the original Shen Yan, he does not accept Lu Xingchuan’s contempt, Xie Li’s insinuations, or his agent’s attempts to control him. He prefers direct confrontation, often turning accusations into jokes, insults, financial demands, or public counterattacks. 1 16 31
He is highly money-minded but frames his demands as compensation rather than exploitation. He willingly accepts payment for a cheek kiss from Pei Heng, creates the “Qin Shi Huang” curse scam for a 200-yuan red packet, and repeatedly insists that people who damage his reputation should prepare compensation. 20 23 31
Despite his volatile behavior, Shen Yan is observant and protective of people he considers kind to him. He helps Bai Jing uncover others’ hidden missions after she gives him the last slice of lamb, and he notices Song Qianshan’s injured knee when Xie Li’s performance distracts the others. 20 33
