Background and History
Flared Ears was initially a non-combat Zombie King who controlled a small group of Elite Zombies in Jiangbei City. When Lin Dong confronted him over a human corpse, he immediately abandoned confrontation after recognizing Lin Dong's overwhelming strength. He pragmatically declared that he would support whichever side prevailed between Lin Dong and the Corpse Nest across the river. 98
Lin Dong later forced Flared Ears into service as a tracker. His assignment was to locate Tech Company personnel; the promised reward was that Lin Dong would spare his life. Flared Ears used his awakened hearing to identify a nearby Beast-Hunting Squad, proving useful enough to remain under Lin Dong's protection. 106
While working for Lin Dong, he repeatedly searched Jiangbei for human activity and warned the zombie horde of threats across the river. His hearing also exposed Nan Fenglie despite the latter's Water Concealment, allowing the surrounding zombies to attack the hidden human scout. 109 110 256
He survived a Coastal City infiltration after briefly falling under parasite-based Mind Control. Regaining consciousness at the last moment, he bluffed the Zombie Mermaid by pretending to be an admirer and prospective recruit, then fled when her suspicions grew. Tank ultimately saved him from the pursuing Elite Zombies. 159 160
Appearance
Flared Ears is a zombie distinguished by his disproportionately huge ears, which resemble palm-leaf fans. His appearance is conspicuous enough that enemies can identify him from a distance. 670 418
- Two oversized ears are the source of both his name and his tracking ability.
- He has large buckteeth, with a sharp fang wedged between them. 670
- After fighting Bigtooth, he threaded one of Bigtooth's knocked-out front teeth through his injured ear as an earring. 454
- He later wears multiple dangling ear ornaments, which jingle when he moves. 746 854
- His characteristic tracking posture involves pressing an ear to the ground, raising his hips, straightening his legs, and shuffling forward. 106
Personality
Flared Ears is cowardly when faced with superior force, but his fear makes him highly adaptable rather than passive. He readily switches sides, retreats from impossible fights, and flatters dangerous opponents when survival requires it. When Lin Dong appeared behind him immediately after a speech about defending his territory, Flared Ears abandoned his bravado and agreed to any task that would keep him alive. 106
He is also an incorrigible braggart. Flared Ears routinely inflates his role in battles, claims victories he did not earn, and presents injuries sustained while fleeing as “medals of glory.” His subordinates often believe him, while more perceptive companions expose the gaps in his stories. 141 162 420 756
Behind the exaggeration, he is genuinely observant and tactically minded. He recognizes when raw strength will not work, prefers ambushes and psychological manipulation, and makes practical use of stronger allies, terrain, fog, and firearms. 160 602 677 889
Abilities & Skills
Super Hearing
Flared Ears possesses the awakened ability [Super Hearing], allowing him to detect faint sounds over a large area by pressing his ears to the ground.
- Can hear insects moving, rats foraging, dust settling, and distant footsteps. 106
- His listening range can extend several kilometers; he later demonstrates reliable detection within roughly two kilometers. 106 141
- Tracks human squads, zombie movements, underground tunnels, and concealed enemies. 106 256 566
- Identified that an Augmented Human disguised as Little Eight had heavier footsteps than the real speed-type Zombie King. 241
- Detects incoming aircraft, drones, hostile conversations, and underground movement before others notice them. 470 854
- Flowing water can interfere with his ability to pinpoint voices. 110
- Parasite songs and other intense sound-based effects can overwhelm or disrupt his hearing. 159 160
Deception and Ambush Tactics
Flared Ears compensates for weak direct combat ability through bluffing, provocation, and opportunistic planning.
- Escaped the Zombie Mermaid by inventing a false identity and flattering her into believing he wanted to join Coastal City. 160
- Provoked Nether Dragon into attacking Great Sun City, then called on hidden Zombie Kings to crush the invading horde. 677
- Pressured Nether Dragon into extorting pigs from neighboring Corpse Nests, deliberately escalating a conflict Lin Dong's faction expected to fight eventually. 696
- Used black mist and staged performances to lure human scouting teams toward Tank's ambush. 748 750 751
- Pretended to accept an honorable one-on-one duel with Cucumber before firing an S-rank Crystal Core Cannon at him. 854
- Used Mist's smoke cover to ambush and execute a Central Province minor leader with a scavenged S-rank Crystal Core. 889
Survival Instincts
Flared Ears is exceptionally quick to retreat from threats he cannot handle.
- Abandoned a plan to recruit a flying Zombie King after witnessing a Tech Company sand-user annihilate thousands of zombies. 486
- Fled from Cucumber's pursuing force when his cannon attack failed to secure a kill. 854
- Responded to a crashed aircraft and approaching danger by broadcasting a distress signal to every zombie he could reach. 856
- Frequently relies on stronger allies—particularly Tank, Mist, and the Corpse Nest's hidden forces—to survive encounters beyond his rank. 160 677 789
