At the Zhongshan International villa, Lu Zhou was sitting in his study, writing something at his desk when he suddenly sneezed without warning.
"Who's thinking about me again...?"
He sniffed and muttered to himself, then turned his gaze back to the draft paper before him, lightly tapping his ballpoint pen against the desk.
"This is kind of difficult."
[...When n is greater than 2, two n-dimensional Complex Complete Intersections X^n(d) and X^n(d") are diffeomorphic if and only if their Euler numbers, total degrees, and Pontrjagin classes are equal.]
Strictly speaking, this was neither a Complex Analysis problem nor a Partial Differential Equations problem in the traditional sense. It was instead a rather interesting classification problem concerning smooth manifolds.
The description might have sounded a little convoluted, but in Differential Topology, it was actually a fairly popular line of research, focusing primarily on properties of Differential Manifolds that remained invariant under diffeomorphisms.
The troublesome part was that although Lu Zhou was quite knowledgeable about Differential Manifolds and Topology, he had not done much research into the branch of Mathematics known as Differential Topology.
It could even be said that this was an entirely new field for him.
Still, that was understandable. After all, Professor Chen Yang was studying the Hodge Conjecture, while he was studying the Riemann Hypothesis. They had originally been two completely different problems.
It was only because the Hyperelliptic Curve Analysis Method could be improved and applied to research on the Cauchy-Riemann equations and generalized Riemann Surfaces that it had sparked his association with this problem...
"This is really making things hard for me... Should I just leave it alone?"
After pondering for a while, Lu Zhou shook his head and ultimately cast that unpromising thought out of
